“You *must* be joking.” Rúmil eyed his lover with the kind of glare he usually reserved for orcs he was about to kill.
“No, honestly!” Lindir replied enthusiastically, ignoring the glare, “it is good! Just try it!”
“I will not! This is very serious business, Lindir, not to be taken lightly!” Shaking his head, Rúmil couldn’t believe what he was hearing. How could Lindir suggest such a thing?
Lindir sighed - Rúmil was being incredibly stubborn about this. How to convince him that it wouldn’t ruin everything and was, in fact, actually very nice?
“Rúmil, look,” He said, keeping his voice as calm as he could. “You just pop it in and stir it around a bit! Just try it once, please?” He smiled, giving his lover his most winning look. Rúmil had never managed to resist that look before.
The look made Rúmil’s heart skip a beat and for a moment, he almost wavered. Lindir seemed to want it so very much…and really, what harm could it do? It was only once, after all.
“Well,” he started, but as he was about to continue, the thought of it took over his mind again and he stopped. “Maybe you can ask Orophin to try it,” he finished lamely.
Lindir, who had begun to look hopeful, pouted as Rúmil declined yet again.
“But Glorfindel likes it!” he said, a little desperately. He knew Rúmil admired the older warrior. “He was the one who introduced me to it!”
Unfortunately, this time Rúmil’s admiration was just not enough to encourage him to try something so different from what he had previously known. “Clearly then,” the Galadhel said, “that is proof that no one is perfect.”
Lindir groaned. Maybe it was hopeless and he should just give up. He was out of ideas anyway… he’d tried every trick he knew to convince his beloved.
“Fine,” he huffed, “please yourself. I am going to bed.” He turned on his heel and made for the bedroom, but Rúmil caught him and drew him into his arms.
“Please love, forgive me?” Rúmil pleaded, holding his lover close. “I do not wish to offend, it is just… I have never done such a strange thing before.”
The embrace did much to soothe Lindir’s wounded pride and he melted into the strong arms. He could never stay angry with Rúmil, even when he wouldn’t try something that Lindir thought was absolutely wonderful.
“I forgive you,” he mumbled, leaning in for a tender kiss. It is not all that important anyway, I just thought you might like it. Come, let us forget about it and go to bed.”
Rúmil smiled, bringing Lindir’s hand to his lips and kissing it. “Thank you, love,” he whispered as Lindir led the way to the bedroom. “I love you.”
“As I do you,” Lindir replied, lighting a candle and closing the door behind them. “And I always will, no matter how many good ideas you refuse to try!”
Grinning, Rúmil pulled Lindir to the bed and pushed him down gently into the soft covers. “I assure you, for now it is I who is full of good ideas and I hope you will agree with them!”
From his position on the bed, Lindir batted his long lashes at Rúmil. “Somehow, beloved, I think that I will!”
******************
Much later however, as Lindir lay sleeping, Rúmil tossed and turned, unable to rest. Lindir’s earlier suggestion would not leave his mind, despite how much he had protested and still protested.
Growling under his breath he sat up and threw off his covers, being careful not to wake Lindir. Wrapping himself in a soft robe, he slipped out of their room and down the darkened halls.
He soon reached his destination, finding the vast area easily. He quickly started a small fire and reached for the items he needed. It wasn’t long before the milk was warmed and the dried cocoa beans had been added to the mix. Staring at it he took a deep breath before he added the final ingredient.
It was a strip of boiled, hardened sugar that had been flavoured with peppermint. A candy cane, Lindir had called it. He had also insisted that if added to hot cocoa it melted and infused the drink with its flavour, which was completely delightful.
Rúmil, who loved hot cocoa above all other foods, had been horrified. Tainting the perfect flavour with over-cooked sugar sounded like the most dreadful idea! He had resisted the idea until Lindir had finally given up trying to get him to try it.
However Rúmil’s curiosity had finally got the better of him and now here he was about to try it. Hoping he wasn’t about to waste a mug of perfectly wonderful hot cocoa, he dropped the candy cane in.
He let it sit there for a few minutes and then lifted the mug to his lips and took a sip. A moment later he gasped and stared at the mug in shock. Lindir had been right – it was good! A smile graced his face as he eagerly drank the rest of the sweet liquid. Who would have thought that mint and cocoa were a good mix? He certainly wouldn’t have!
Of course, now he would have to tell Lindir that he had tried it. His lover was sure to tease him. Unless… a wicked glint shone in Rúmil’s eyes as an idea came to him. No, he wouldn’t tell Lindir. The minstrel was bound to try to convince him again and if he played it right and gave in at the correct time, Lindir would… reward him. Oh yes, that was a far better idea!
Chuckling to himself Rúmil washed out the mug before returning to their room, a happy smile on his face as he slipped back into bed beside his sleeping lover.
THE END
Side note: In case anyone was wondering - it really IS good!
