A Thinking Problem

A Thinking Problem

Don’t Come the Cowboy with Me, Sonny Jim

by

kirsty maccoll

Some boys with warm beds and cold, cold hearts
Can make you feel nothing at all
They’ll never remember and they’ll never mind
If you’re counting the cracks in the wall
They’re quick and they’re greedy
They never feel guilty
They don’t know the meaning of hurt
The boots just go back on
The socks that had stayed on
The next time they see you
They treat you like dirt
The next time they treat you like dirt

Did somebody tell you I’m lonely as hell?
I didn’t expect you to know me so well
If I learned a lesson it’s how to bounce back again
Sometimes I bounce off the wall
And sometimes my head hits the floor

Chapter nine

A Thinking Problem

Billy was thinking. Billy paced, paced and kept thinking. He paced because Viggo was on his way over, and damn, did he have to come over now? Billy wanted to sort things out. Billy was thinking, and he was thinking that maybe he had a thinking problem. He was thinking that he had a thinking problem because he couldn’t get Sean out of his head or his heart long enough to sort things out. He thought about how Sean had broken him into a thousand thousand pieces and put him back together again. Sean had put those thousand thousand pieces back together again, and on every piece in blood red letters was the name “Sean.”

Not that he minded it; Billy hadn’t minded it at all, even though it had scared him. Still scared him. Because he didn’t think he could live without Sean. But could Sean live without Billy? The very thought scared Billy, scared him senseless, scared him so much he was having a thinking problem.

With outdoor shots scheduled and the weather being miserably wet, it was impossible to do any shoots so they had at least another day or two before they had to be back to work. Viggo had called, saying he was going to drive Billy’s car over to Sean’s house. Then Sean could take Viggo back home. So Viggo had shown up, knocking first, then letting himself in.

When Billy found out Viggo was coming over he had been nervous.

“He’ll know.” Billy had said to Sean.

“He already knew.” Sean had countered.

Billy had sat quietly, waiting on Viggo to get there, and when he heard the knock on the door, Billy had gotten up as if shot out of a cannon and was heading to their bedroom. Sean had snagged him, refusing to allow him to hide. “No.” Sean said, “None of that.”

And then Viggo had let himself in, Viggo had let himself in and he was smiling. He immediately approached Billy, dangling the keys to Billy’s car. Billy reached out and snatched them, not meaning to be so abrupt, but for some reason he felt very nervous. Billy felt so nervous he was sure he was about to jump right out of his skin.

Viggo grinned at Billy, Viggo grinned and Billy was sure Viggo saw right through him. Viggo laughed, he laughed and pinched Billy’s arse. Billy squeaked, yet again sounding all hobbity. Billy blushed. Sean thumped Viggo on the shoulder. Sean thumped Viggo on the shoulder quite hard.

“Hands fucking off, Viggo.” Sean said.

“Well,” said Viggo, “Is it?”

“Is it what?” Sean responded, knowing what Viggo was going to say, knowing and not being able to do a damned thing about it.

“Is it a perfect little bubble of an ass?”

“That’s none of your business, Viggo.”

“I take it that you’ve found out, then.” It wasn’t a question.

“You,” Sean laughed, “are the most exasperating son of a bitch I’ve ever met. Now behave, you’re scaring Billy.”

“Oh no he isn’t!” Billy said, “He might be embarrassing me, but he doesn’t scare me.”

“Alright then, stop embarrassing Billy.” Sean said. “Coffee?”

“Tea, please.” Viggo said.

“I’ll get it.” Sean said, leaving Billy alone with Viggo.

Viggo was looking at Billy, looking at Billy and smiling and smiling. He walked slowly around Billy, and was he… ? He was! He was sniffing Billy!

“Stop, Viggo.” Billy said.

“Oh, but Billy! I was just…”

“What?”

“Oh, just having a good look at what’s been driving Sean insane all these months.”

“Insane?”

“Oh, like you didn’t know.”

“I didn’t!”

“Oh, come on!” Viggo said, putting an arm around Billy’s shoulders and pulling him close, Viggo whispered in Billy’s ear. “You knew. Of course you knew. You’re quite the little tease, aren’t you?”

“I didn’t know!” Billy protested.

“Oh, come on, Billy, tell Uncle Viggo all about it. You knew. On some level, you knew. You’re just such a little innocent you wouldn’t admit it to yourself that he could want you like that.”

Billy opened his mouth to speak, but found he couldn’t. Billy couldn’t speak because he knew Viggo had figured it out. Viggo had figured it out before Billy himself had.

“How long has Sean, um…”

“Wanted to fuck you? Oh, for a long, long time. He thought it was just some little sexual blip on his libido, but I knew better from the start.”

“Viggo, what are you saying?” Billy asked softly, almost afraid of the answer. Which he didn’t get because Sean called out that the tea was ready. Viggo, arm still around Billy’s shoulders, walked to the kitchen. They sat at the table and had their tea, and Billy listened to Viggo and Sean chatting. Billy realized that they were, after all, best mates. These two men shared a bond, and it really was no wonder Viggo had figured certain things out. Billy started to relax. Viggo could be infuriating, but he really was a lovely man, and he really did love Sean, and anyone who loved Sean was fine with Billy.

After a while Viggo got up, saying he was supposed to go for a drive with Orli. He once more put his arm around Billy’s shoulders, and as Sean took their cups to the sink, Viggo leaned close and whispered in Billy’s ear.

“I’ve never seen him this happy. I’m glad, little Billy, but I swear, if you break his heart, I’ll break your neck.”

“Wh-what?”

“He’s in love with you, you little idiot! Can’t you tell? Or…that’s it! You think he can’t love you! You think you can never really hold onto him, don’t you? Good God, Billy! Don’t you know?”

“Know what?”

“Damn it, Billy, if you were mine, I’d never let you out of my sight. What makes you think you’re so unlovable? Sean couldn’t possibly love anyone so much that isn’t worth it, Billy. It’s you, Billy, it’s just you. There’s just something about you, Billy. He adores you. He’s been sick with wanting you. So don’t you go hurting him, or I swear you’ll have to deal with me.”

Billy grinned. Billy grinned and felt an enormous weight lift from his heart. Sean really loved him. Sean was crazy about him. Suddenly he wasn’t worried about Sean being able to live without him anymore. Billy threw his arms around Viggo and kissed his cheek.

Viggo laughed and embraced Billy, almost squeezing the stuffing out of him.

“I’ll take good care of him, Viggo. I promise.”

Sean turned after washing up their cups and he and Billy walked Viggo to the door. Sean noticed Billy wasn’t nervous at all any more. This was good, because Viggo was Sean’s best friend, and he wanted Billy and Viggo to get along. They watched Viggo shrug into his coat and walk out of the door. Billy got Sean’s coat and held it for him. Sean shrugged into his own coat.

“Drive careful, Sean.” Billy said. “I hope Viggo visits us often, he’s a lovely man.”

Sean beamed. He had been worried that Billy would be so uncomfortable around Viggo that they wouldn’t be able to get along. He gathered Billy to his chest and gave Billy a sound kissing. Viggo was in Sean’s car. He honked the horn.

“Break it up, you two!” Viggo called. “Come on, Sean, Orli’s waiting on me. And Billy will be waiting on you.”

“You can bet your sweet arse on that.” Billy said, smiling up at Sean. “Now hurry up. I’m feeling a little nappish. I’ll be in our bed. Waiting.”

Sean swatted Billy’s perfect little bubble of an arse. “I’ll be right back.” Sean said.

“I know.” Billy said.

Billy watched them pull off. He was smiling to himself. He wasn’t having a thinking problem any more.

“I know.” Billy said, to himself, this time. “I know. I know.”

He went to their bedroom, undressed and got under the covers. He’d be right here, waiting when Sean got back, and boy was Sean going to have his hands full. He relaxed, resting his head on his arms. He hadn’t felt this happy in a long time.

Smiling to himself, he closed his eyes and sighed. “I know.” he said.
