Chapter seven

Legolas stood in front of a mirror and looked at himself with a satisfied smile on his lips. His belly had gotten even rounder if possible, but Legolas no longer resented it. Quite the contrary he had become very fond of his baby belly. He gently rubbed it through the green fabric and tried to soothe his kicking child. Im mela lle, ion-nin Legolas thought sadly. A le na i er i mil nin. [I love you, my son. And you are the only one who loves me.]

During the past few weeks it had become clearer and clearer to him that Aragorn and his marriage was over. They had had a massive fight after Legolas had moved out of their chambers and their relations had been very strained ever since. They didn’t even have dinner together anymore, for Legolas had taken to eating dinner in his own quarters, usually alone but often accompanied by Lord Elrond.

Despite his round middle Legolas was in a very good shape. He had trained archery and hand-to-hand combat – albeit alone – for several weeks several hours a day and regained his lean muscular body. Lord Elrond had encouraged him after seeing how the training affected his mood and general well-being. Legolas was sure Aragorn didn’t know about his new training habits, of which he was glad. He was sure that his husband would forbid him such actions the same second he became aware of them.

We no longer understand each other Legolas admitted to himself. And as much as I would like to put the blame on his guard, I really cannot. For ‘tis this pregnancy that has come between us, the pregnancy and this cursed Kingdom.

The baby kicked and Legolas rubbed his belly apologetically. “I’m sorry, ion-nin, for thinking that way. ‘Tis not you that has caused this rift between me and your Father… He and I are responsible for our own actions. I don’t think I’ve been a very good husband to your Ada. I think I owe him and myself that much that I try to fix things between us before you’re born.”

Legolas decided to have a talk with Aragorn right away. He wanted to apologise for his own rash actions and make amends. He also wanted Aragorn to understand the inner turmoil he had been in for the past seven months. It’s not too late, it cannot be He thought desperately. He still loved Aragorn with all his heart and could only hope that his husband felt the same way about him.

Unbeknowst to him Lord Elrond had come to the same conclusion and had demanded a meeting with his foster son. They were in the King’s study alone, for Aragorn had dismissed Thomas and asked him to hold a meeting with the guards. Aragorn was pacing the floor and muttering silent curses. The topic of their conversation was not a pleasant one.

“And what of this guard, Thomas?” Elrond demanded. “It seems that you’ve become very attached to him. Do you have feelings for him?”

The King looked at his father incredulously. Elrond merely raised an eyebrow. “And what if I have? That’s none of your business, Adar!” Aragorn said defiantly.

“Do not treat me with disrespect, Elessar!” Elrond boomed. “Just because you’re the King here it doesn’t give you the right to speak to me like that. I thought I raised you better.”

Aragorn had the grace to look ashamed. He sighed and rubbed his temples. “What is it you want from me, Adar? Do you wish me to speak about myself and Legolas? It hurts too much, father, it hurts so much. It’s quite obvious he no longer loves me. Being pregnant has changed him and our marriage. I don’t think I know him anymore. He’s not the same elf I fell in love with.”

Elrond smiled at him sympathetically. “I beg to differ, my son. But pray tell me about your guard. Are you fond of him?”

“I do not love him, if that’s what you’re asking. I do like him, and I consider him as a friend, but ‘tis not love”, Aragorn admitted. There’s only one person I love, Adar, and he’s my husband he thought but left it unsaid.

“How can you treat Legolas like this? He’s seven months pregnant with your child! Shouldn’t you tell him how you feel about him?” Lord Elrond inquired.

It was very clear to him now that Aragorn and Legolas’ strained relationship was due to a massive misunderstanding. Both believed that the other no longer wanted to continue their marriage while the truth was quite the opposite. He sighed inwardly. He wanted to tell Aragorn about Legolas’ feelings, but he didn’t want to betray the Prince’s trust. They should learn to handle their problems by themselves.

“He no longer wants to hear my words”, Aragorn said quietly. In his mind he had already given up on his husband. Legolas moving out just proved him that the elf wanted solitude and needed to get away from him.

Elrond came to him and caressed his cheek gently. “Do not give up, my son. All is not lost yet. I think the two of you just need to talk things through. Do not fret, there’s still hope left, Estel.”

“Hope…” Aragorn whispered. He wanted to believe that he and Legolas could still find some happiness together, that they hadn’t drifted too far away from each other. The fair-haired elf had his heart… no, Legolas was his heart. The following days and years would be so empty without his sweet, gentle beloved. Aragorn nodded determinedly. “You’re right, Adar. There must still be hope for me and my husband. Once again I thank thee for thy counsel, father. I need to speak to him at once.”

Elrond nodded and clasped his hand. “I wish you luck, my son. I would like to see the two of you happy once again; not just for your sake but the baby’s as well.”

Legolas walked briskly back to his chambers with tears in his eyes. He had accidentally eavesdropped a part of Lord Elrond and Aragorn’s conversation. What he heard broke his heart. Aragorn’s voice ”I do not love him, if that’s what you’re asking. I do like him, and I consider him as a friend, but ‘tis not love.” Then Elrond “How can you treat Legolas like this? He’s seven months pregnant with our child! Shouldn’t you tell him how you feel about him?” So it was true then. Aragorn no longer loved him and had even admitted it to his father. Legolas sobbed and threw himself on the bed. How did everything go so wrong?

After the child is born I shall return to Mirkwood. Then Aragorn will be free to love whoever he wishes. I shall not stand in the way. Legolas sobbed uncontrollably at the thought. Without you, my son, I’d surely die of grief. My husband doesn’t want me anymore. Is there a crueler fate?

Legolas and Aragorn weren’t joined by marriage alone. Their souls were bonded in an eternal partnership that was blessed by the Valar themselves. Since Aragorn had some Elven blood in him he shared Legolas’ immortality due to the bonding.

By joining with him I’ve sentenced myself to an eternal loneliness Legolas despaired. Why is my husband’s heart so fickle? How is it that I no longer have a place in his heart? Tears ran down his high cheekbones and cheeks. His son kicked frantically, sensing his father’s pain and grief. Legolas tried to soothe him by murmuring softly in Elvish and rubbing his belly in large circles.

“All is well, my precious baby, Ada will make things right, don’t worry”. He kept repeating the phrase and after a while he almost believed it himself.

He grabbed his bow and quiver and strode out of his chambers. He needed fresh air and also some time to think. Archery had always been a good way to distract himself from his current problems. Legolas didn’t want to dwell on his thoughts while he was this upset for he didn’t want to harm his unborn babe.

Aragorn had searched Legolas for what seemed like hours. Where can he be? He wondered. He had always thought that Legolas spent his days in the library or his chambers, doing naught but reading and eating, but now when he needed his husband he couldn’t find him. Aragorn had asked one of the guards if he knew where the Prince was, but the guard didn’t know about the Prince’s whereabouts. However, he did tell the King that the Prince rarely spent his afternoons in the palace and disappeared for hours.

Aragorn didn’t know what to think about that, so after telling Thomas to write a raport about the meeting with the guards he decided to wait for Legolas in the Prince Consort’s chambers. Legolas would come there eventually.

He was right. After what felt like eternity a flushed Legolas returned to his chambers. The wind had made his cheeks pretty pink and his hair quite a mess. He had left his bow and quiver in the training field and to Aragorn his disheveled appearance was more than suspicious.

Legolas gasped aloud of the sight of his stern looking husband. “Aragorn?!”
