Chapter six

Legolas was fuming. Not only had Aragorn humiliated him in front of a guard he had also dismissed him like he was a child. Legolas had noticed the smug look on Thomas’ face before he left. He’s after Aragorn, I know it. But is there anything I can do to stop him? It seems that Aragorn spends time rather with him than with me.

Legolas had returned to the Royal chambers after the incident with Aragorn. He was pacing the bedchamber floor when he happened to glance at the mirror. He almost shrieked in terror. That was not him! That pale, bloated creature could not be him. Prince Legolas of Greenwood was renowned for his beauty and elegance. However there was nothing beautiful or elegant in that creature that looked back from the mirror.

“No wonder Aragorn no longer desires me”, Legolas despaired aloud. “I’m nothing like the Elf he fell in love with.” He looked guiltily at his bow and quiver that lay on the corner of the room. “I haven’t touched them once since the coronation.”

Legolas looked at his reflection in disgust. He had taken to wearing formal robes after their coronation and wedding. His hair was no longer braided in Mirkwood warrior style but left open. He tried his upper arms and noticed to his utter humiliation that they had softened considerably due to lack of practice and training. Legolas’ cheeks burned. He was a disgrace! He was fat, whiny and lazy. My father would be so ashamed if he knew what I have become.

Legolas made up his mind. I shall start training once more, if only Lord Elrond agrees to it. I’m sick and tired of being a useless waste of space. The least I can do is regain my skills as a warrior. At least that keeps me occupied.

Aragorn and Legolas had sent word to Lord Elrond in Imladris three months ago and asked him to come to Minas Tirith to supervise the pregnancy. Lord Elrond had agreed to stay with them until the baby was born. He was very excited about Legolas’ pregnancy, after all their baby was to be his first grandchild. Also male pregnancies were very rare and he had never witnessed one before. Luckily there were several books and parchments concerning male pregnancies in Imladris’ vast library.

Legolas took off his formal robe and put on an old tunic. It was a tad tight across his waist but he didn’t care. It felt so familiar and so right that he wondered why he had taken to wearing those horrible robes in the first place. Legolas also braided his hair with his nimble fingers. He didn’t want his hair to come in the way while he was shooting arrows. He took his bow and quiver and headed to Lord Elrond’s chambers.

"Why this is a nice surprise, Legolas”, Lord Elrond said smiling. He was reading a thick book in front of the window in his study. “Are you heading to the practice field?” He queried and eyed the Prince’s outfit.

Legolas nodded. “If it doesn’t harm the child”, he added quietly. Despite the fact that he hated being pregnant he loved his baby more than anything save Aragorn. He didn’t want any harm to come to him.

"No, quite the contrary. I believe that a little exercise is good for both you and the baby”, Elrond said reassuringly. “Is something amiss, Legolas? You look exhausted.”

Legolas blinked back tears that threatened to spill. “Everything is fine, Lord Elrond, but thank you for your concern. I have only realised that I’ve neglected my training and become soft and lazy. I wish to regain my skills and my strength.”

Elrond nodded understandingly. He had been very worried about the Prince ever since his arrival a couple of months earlier. He had sensed the tension between his foster son and Legolas and witnessed it increase during the past few weeks. He had talked to Aragorn about it but the King had brushed him off saying that whatever happened between himself and Legolas was none of anyone’s business.

Legolas bid Elrond farewell and headed to the training field. It had been a while since the last time he had trained there. Legolas noticed that the targets had been replaced by new ones and they were farther away from the shooting area than before. He guessed correctly that they were for the archer trainees. He noticed the curious looks he received from the others but decided to ignore them. He knew he was an intriguing sight with his round baby-belly.

Hours later Legolas lay on his bed exhausted but happy. His aiming had suffered greatly from the lack of training but he had been able to correct it somewhat. He rubbed his belly and smiled fondly when the baby kicked for an answer. “Did you like the way your Ada was shooting today?” He asked and laughed aloud when the child gave a powerful kick. “I take that as a yes, ion-nin.”

He discarded his clothing and went to the bathroom to wash himself. Elves don’t usually sweat but the pregnancy had altered his metabolism somewhat. Legolas dipped a washcloth in warm water and washed his chest and armpits with it. He looked at himself in the mirror and smiled meekly. I should train every day in order to get my muscles back. By the Valar I’d rather travel to the halls of Mandos than become a fat, spoiled elven Prince.

Legolas went back to the bedchamber and sat down on the bed. I need to stop pretending that my marriage is working, for it is not. It seems that we only end up fighting if we spend more than two minutes together in the same room. I don’t know what has gone wrong or how to fix it. I guess it would be best if I had my things moved back to my old chambers.

The thought of moving away from Aragorn almost broke his heart but he also knew that they couldn’t continue like this anymore. He still loved his husband but he had the baby to think about as well. Elrond had already told him that stress was bad for the child and that Legolas should take better care of himself.

I’m doing this for our baby, Estel. Please try to understand. Legolas thought. He summoned a hand-maid and asked her to go to the Prince Consort’s chambers and check if the King and his guard were still there. The maid curtseyed and did what she was asked. She returned a couple of minutes later and told Legolas that the chambers had been empty. He smiled grimly and summoned other maids to help with the packing of his clothes and other belongings. In a matter of two hours everything he personally owned had been moved back to his old chambers. Legolas stood at the door and sighed heavily. He could only wish that this was the right decision.
