Chapter 47 - Getting to Know You

And so, Haldir came for Eridani the next morning, as promised, and together spent a long day exploring the groves and waterways, and then returning close to sunset, tired but happy.

In this way they spent several weeks, each day exploring a new area of Arlani, whether it was the fishing tributaries that dotted the valley, the expansive groves of fruits and vegetables, the grain fields, the orchards and gardens, or planning to take their meals under shady trees.

Slowly, they became friends again, and eventually the trust and easy manner that had once so implicitly existed between them returned. They knew it not until the day Eridani slipped on a river stone as they crossed to the other side.

Losing her balance, she screeched and Haldir turned quickly to keep her from falling. Reaching out for her, he grasped her slender waist and pulled her close to his body.

His protective reaction was immediate and so was the fire that leapt between them. Gazing in amazement at one another, the intense emotion so overwhelming that Haldir lost his footing and with a loud cry they stumbled into the cool water.

Laughing and gasping, Haldir quickly stood and pulled Eridani with him. Arching one eyebrow in her direction, Haldir commented, "It seemed to me this river was much deeper, hmm, my Lady?"

Eridani laughed heartily, "Nay, I said not so to you, my Lord. All I said was that the river rocks were treacherous."

She laughed even more when she caught sight of his sopping garments, although she noticed with a keen eye, that they did hug his shape, revealing much of the well-muscled body beneath. Wet as she was, her body suddenly flared with a muted warmth that she felt creep to her face and ears.

Seeing her flush, Haldir correctly guessed what portion of his anatomy her eyes were focused on and let her look for as long as she wished, realizing that the soft fabric of her gown also revealed much.

Not wishing to break the good will between them, he jumped nimbly across the rock, his footing now sure and steady and extended his hand to her. Taking it, Eridani felt a strong current passing between them. Neither commenting on what they had just felt, they walked back to the Healing Place and their separate rooms.

Later that night, Haldir strolled in the groves, unable to sleep.

Earendil was high in the heavens and he wished its light would shine a path inside his heart.

He had never stopped loving Eridani, although he had come close to giving up hope. But now he realized he had remembered her in ways that she was now not, or perhaps he had not the time to discover. He found he enjoyed her company more than he had realized he would, more than he had pined for, and was anxious to not declare his feelings too quickly. There was still much that he had to show her and he wanted to let her set the pace and the boundaries.

However, he reasoned, judging from the reaction that holding hands elicited earlier in the day, he knew that both their defenses were crumbling.

Turning to look in the direction of her rooms, he saw from the windows a light glowing faintly.

Eridani could see Haldir in the dark, so strong was his lifeforce. She watched his silver-blonde hair, his confident stride and the powerful shoulders. She remembered every kiss he had given her, every caress, every endearment. He used to call her "his heart", she remembered that too.

And with the memories, she became more disquieted. Now she could not sleep and smiled as she watched him. It seemed he too was bedeviled.

Forcing her eyes away from the window, Eridani doused the candle flame and laid down in her bed.

Below, in the groves, Haldir wished her sweet dreams, knowing his own would not come.

With an anxious sigh, he made his way back to his room.
