Chapter 45 - When Two Hearts Meet

Two days after Tamarcil's visit......

The golden Eagle swiftly covered the fro from Avonea to Arlani in one day. By the time Haldir arrived at the city on the Uile, night had descended but he was not weary. Thanking the Ryder and the Eagle for their speedy flight, he turned to the waiting elves behind him.

He had visited this city many times before, yet never failed to be enchanted by the amazing aromas and colors that assailed the senses. And under the light of the Moon, the valley became even more lovely.

He acknowledged the Healers and quickly scanned their faces. "Which of you has treated the Lady Eridani?"

One elf, dark hair braided at the sides, stepped forward and answered, "My Lord, 'tis I."

Haldir nodded and approached the elf. "Then walk with me and tell me of her."

Together, they walked into the large building that served as the Healing Place for the elves and soon disappeared within its labyrinthine halls. The Ryder and Eagle, satisfied their Lord was well attended to, soared skyward and with a cry of "Elbereth!" departed North toward Avonea.

By dawn Haldir had learned all that the Healers knew of Eridani's condition. He knew she had been found wandering the fruit groves, safe and hale, a wonder they said, but not for Haldir. He well knew she had been safe in the hands of the Valar until found. He learned too that her memory was intact in all places, but not at firand and that her rememberings had come slowly at first and then with greater clarity. She now knew all of the history of the Sack of Avonea and the Second Song of the Ainur. And although this amazed him, he knew that all was possible under the will of Illuvatar. In his soul he was thankful that the Valar had kept her safe and sane.

The Healer had also told Haldir that her emotions had been at first somewhat dull, but had returned during the visit from Tamarcil, a thing they said would have occurred of itself. This, the Healer suspected, might have been due to the rush of happiness at seeing an old friend, spurring the healing of heart and mind where emotions were involved.

But the Healer also counseled that she was still, in many ways, fragile.

For his part, Haldir explained his desire and his plan. The Healer agreed this course of action would be the best indicated.

Haldir had smiled at the elf's approval, for he had determined he would woo her heart gently, a thing he had not had the time to do before.

By the time Haldir was finished speaking with the Healer, the sun was high in the sky. But he was too excited to sleep. He knew sleep would not come, not for many days.

On the surface he appeared calm and collected, but underneath his spirit was broiling in anticipation. So long, he thought...so long, so many years.

Waiting in a large antechamber, he was brought a small meal and he ate with gusto, not realizing how hungry he had been. Finished, he stood and walked to a balcony that overlooked the valley before him. But it was not the groves and the colors and sky that captured his gaze. It was the sight of an elven female, rich dark brown hair curling down her back, as she emerged from the building and casually strolled among the groves, that sent his heart and breath into convulsions. Gripping the balustrade, his eyes stared at the female's back, until she stopped, feeling the intensity of his will, and turned. In a moment, her face raised to his and their eyes met.

Haldir forgot to breathe. The stunned look of her face, the sweet curve of her mouth as it opened in a shocked, "Oh" which he heard whispered in his mind, almost overtook him. But he fought his panic and managed a smile. Reaching out to her with his mind he felt instead pain and confusion. Staring with sadness at his heart below him, he knew they still had a long road before them. He prayed the Valar would guide them each step of the way.
