Chapter 43 - Be Still My Heart
(Same day, a while later...)
Long after Tamarcil's shocking news had been delivered to him, Haldir still sat in the little chair. No one had come for him and he knew this was his friend's doing, giving him time to think long and ponder deeply. How had these news affected his heart? Was it so? Was Eridani returned? Why not, his mind argued. Had the Valar not returned him to life?
When he was finally able to stand, he left the chair and sat in his private garden for many hours, listening to the song of birds, feeling the cool breeze of Arda's winds caress his face, watching clouds in the sky, and all the while, remembering. Letting not only his mind, but his body and heart remember, too.
He had never ceased longing for her. The soft contours of her lips and the sweet taste of her mouth. The deep brown eyes, whose shade matched the woods on a moonless night. He remembered her hair, its softness, and how the curls adorned her face and danced about her back. His heart wrenched at the memory of her sweet voice, so beloved. And he knew it was more than her body that he missed, her physical presence, but also her spirit, her essence, which had so captivated him and held him in its thrall all these long ages.
He felt the pain threatening to overwhelm him again. He fought to keep it at bay. After all these long years he had come to accept and yield and thus had not broken. But now it was hard for him to breathe, and his eyes felt the sting of tears.
Soon, he felt his face washed by the tears of his loneliness. He knew these were healing tears and he let them come, knowing that from this weakness came his great strength and compassion, a thing he had once lacked in his younger days. Pain, loss and its acceptance had helped him to become even more resilient, able to understand and forgive weakness in others.
Haldir closed his eyes and felt the wind play with his hair. How long had it been? Over a thousand years. And he had taken no Lady to his side, nor none to his bed. He knew the whispered words and worried glances his Council gave him when they thought him otherwise distracted. He had resolutely resisted the idea of marriage to another, somehow knowing from his dreams that this was not the will of the Valar. Indeed, had Elrond of the Snow Council not come to him in a vision and bide him wait? Haldir had not understood the message then, but now it all fit.
Silently, he invoked Nienna for strength and endurance, knowing it was within her power to give him this grace, and thanking her yet again for her continued favor and mercy. Slowly, he began to recover his center and control himself. But he could still see from a distance the uncertainty these news brought. Better to not feel at all, he mused, than to wholly break.
Having come to a decision in the matter, he realized there was only one path to take. But he would need to tread with care, for if Eridani had indeed been returned to life, then she would be fragile. He would not risk losing the precious second chance given to them both.
Standing, his heart more settled, his face wearing his usual steady, composed mask, he strode out of ChamChamber and toward the Royal Hall. Once there he set about setting into motion the plan which was already beginning to take a firm shape in his mind.
