Chapter 40 - The Lost Elves

Ten years after the sack of Avonea....

Haldir gazed thoughtfully at the latest reports from the borders...what they once called borders. More strange sightings of elves. His deep blue eyes, which now reflected a permanent sadness, raised to his Col. Hl. He sat further back in the high chair of the Council Chamber and paid them greater attention.

Now it was the tall, dark haired, Finweniel who spoke. "Lord Haldir, sentries are finding them everywhere! Wandering within the woods of Thalion Tirion, sometimes as far north as the city of Cuinve, near the Ered Hallas. Some have been found singing to the stars in the Ymlad Yave. Even the Lord Elrdon's guards have encountered large groups within their realm. Always they are without covering. They speak an archaic form of Sindarin or Quenya, we know not which, and with little memory of what came before them, save what they last remember."

Haldir sat forward, interested, for an idea was beginning to fashion in his mind. "And what are these?" he prompted.

Finweniel answered, "They claim to be elves, my Lord." His voice was clear.

The Council broke into murmurs and Haldir sat back. This was where Eridani excelled. She would have known what this meant.

Haldir closed his eyes but for a moment, and breathed deeply. Eridani, his mind travelled, still seeking her. What sad sweetness your love has brought me. Now I can no longer feel your caress. Where are you?

Opening his eyes once again, masking his deep pain, he gave his advice to the Council. "More of this we must learn, for if they are truly Eldalie, they may be the lost Avari, whom Melkor captured long ago, in the Old Middle Earth, and who were deformed by his foul will to become the Yrch." His eyes wandered over the faces of the Council.

Everyone sat still, shocked at his words. It was Finweniel who first stirred. "But my Lord, the Avari were corrupted many thousands of years ago! Surely, these elves cannot be one and the same!"

Haldir considered the thought and stood. His Council came to their feet. "Come, let us ponder on this, for we now know that the work of the Valar is indeed upon this World. Many years have come to pass and yet even now the Eagles are kept from us. Let these foundling elves tell us their stories for within their words wisdom may yet come to us."

Walking across the great Royal Chamber, the Council bowed in deference as their Lord made his exit, the sound of his robes slowly fading as Haldir turned toward his private chambers.

Once there he threw off his cloak and walked into the Gardens. The gentle breeze dried the tears that threatened to fall. Turning toward the West his heart called her, but she answered not. Once, in the early days after the Yrch's defeat, Haldir could hear Eridani's gentle call. But over the years her voice had dimmed. Sadly, he let his gaze idly follow a lone Eagle as it descended. There were only eight left in all of Thalion Tirion. The rest still hidden in Ered Hallas where many, including himself and Elrond, knew the Valar still rested.

Abruptly, while he pondered the issue of the found elves, Haldir heard Elrond's voice in his mind.

"The work of the Valar has indeed taken many surprising turns."

Haldir smiled. Even across the great distance, he could still feel the wry humor of the Lord of Alasse Imladris.

"Know you if they may be the lost Avari?" Haldir probed. He felt the surprise from the other's thought.

"They may be, old friend." responded Elrond. "Alas, they can only tell of their last memory. My mind tells me they speak true."

Haldir frowned. "We will have to wait until all is revealed to us."

"As no doubt it will be." responded Elrond.
