Chapter 4
~~~
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and still Las found himself in paradise. He sat out on the balcony of his room that Lord Elrond had been generous enough to give him. Las owed much to the half-elf, he had been the largest help in pulling him from the claws of death, and had given him a home as well as an education.
His wounds had healed slowly but surely and now it was just a matter of getting used to walking again after years of solitude in his attic and the months of bed rest in Imladris. He walked with a cane these days and hoped that the next few months would see him walking without aid.
He sighed and stretched, the season was getting colder as summer came to an end and autumn moved into the valley, that didn’t stop him from soaking up a few more hours in the sun while the warm weather lasted.
He reached into the bowl of berries next to him and popped a blueberry into his mouth savoring the sweet flavor. He let out another content sigh; life was good now, though at night his past haunted him in his dreams. There was no reason for him to complain, he had friends now that cared for him, he was getting the education he had sorely missed out on, he was even learning new languages. No there was nothing to complain about now, life was much better here and he had finally found a measure of peace for once.
“You know you’re going to turn blue if you keep eating those”
Las turned his head to see Legolas grinning at him in the door way. Las smiled at him waving for him to come and sit with him.
“I can’t help it, they are so tasty and soon there won’t be any for the winter” Las whined bringing a chuckle out of the older elf.
“Aye you right little Las there won’t be any left, not with you around scooping up every last berry”
Las pouted crossing his arms and sticking his tongue out. This made Legolas chuckle again, he reached out and patted Las’ shoulder.
“Peace Las I meant no harm, I only came to see how you were doing, you were not at the morning meal, you had us all worried”
Las sighed he hadn’t felt like going this morning, he had been up all night from the nightmares, and the fear he would find himself back in the attic chained to the radiator. He had just wanted to be alone for awhile, he was always around someone, whether it be Elladan constantly shoving food down his throat to fatten him up because he was to small in Elladan’s opinion, or Legolas flitting around him like a mother hen always telling him what not to do in his condition, or Elrohir making him guzzle potions to help with any aches he still had and creams to help with his scars.
He loved them all dearly they were everything to him, he just needed to be alone for once since coming here and let the tranquility of the valley wash over him. Morwen had been nice enough to send him some muffins, tea and berries for him this morning. She seemed to be the only one who knew when Las needed his space. Las liked her, Morwen was Elrond’s head chef and she had been the one to find his broken body lying outside in the orchard when he had been brought to this world.
Morwen had taken an interest in him immediately and had made sure he was well fed while he healed; although now she still did this, simply because he was no longer in the healing wards hadn’t stopped her. He didn’t mind though he loved her cooking and cherished her friendship, he dearly wished to learn how to cook from her, but that would have to wait until he could stand for more than a few minutes without his knees aching.
He looked to Legolas who was staring at him intently waiting for an answer; the poor elf was clearly upset that Las hadn’t been at table this morning.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to worry anyone…I just slept in late, that’s all” he looked away not able to look Legolas in the eye and tell him only a half truth. He didn’t want to bother them with nightmares; he could handle some bad dreams after all he had been through. At least he thought he could.
Legolas frowned he knew Las was keeping something from him.
“Out with it Las, give me the real reason you weren’t at table this morning.”
Las winced, it had been a stupid idea to think he could lie to Legolas; the Elf was ancient compared to his measly 20 years of life, and though he was also an elf to according to Elrond and would eventually be as perceptive as Legolas, he was no where near as good at reading body language as the older elf.
“Alright…I really did sleep in late, but I needed to be alone for a little while; I just needed some peace and quiet. I didn’t want to hurt your feelings” he fiddled with his hands in his lap nervous about his friend’s reaction.
“It’s alright if you need to time to yourself Las, you’re not hurting anyone’s feelings, we all need some time to ourselves every once in awhile. But there is still something you’re not telling me isn’t there?”
Las looked out over the valley; he didn’t want to talk about his nightmares, not yet. He wasn’t ready to talk about anything from his past. He had been tight lipped about everything since his arrival. That night had been so horrifying it made his body ache just to think of the agony he had experienced that night.
Legolas watched him, knowing there was so much Las had yet to open up about. But it was going to take time to get him to share his ordeal with anyone. He knew Las was having nightmares at night, how could to poor thing not? He had suffered greatly the night he had died; it was only natural that those memories still haunted the small elf and he knew that Las feared he would end up going back to his world of birth.
Legolas knew that the only way Las was going back would be if he died here, and he was not about to let that happen. He reached out and patted Las’s small hands.
“Come to me when you are ready to talk little one, I’m always here when you need me.”
Las smiled at him as nodded, turning back to look out at the valley below he lost himself in his thoughts. What they were Legolas could only guess, for now though he would have to leave Las to them and hope Las would come to him before his memories began to haunt his waking hours as well.
