Chapter 4
Erestor slowly stirred to wakefulness. Gingerly he sat up and looked around and was not surprised, at all, to find himself in his bedchamber. Walking into his bathing chamber, he drew a bath and thought of the first time that Elrond had slipped him the sleeping draught. Erestor did not even think that Elrond was aware that he knew. Once he realized that he had been drugged, Erestor panicked, but quickly fell asleep. The next morning he tensed, huddled under his covers, until he felt the remnants of Elrond’s healing energy. Erestor then felt the ache in his heart lessen a degree and knew that Elrond had only wanted to help him. The next time that Elrond slipped him the drug, Erestor made himself drink the wine, though he fought to stay awake, to no avail. Since then, Erestor longed for those times when Elrond would send him into a healing sleep, for the day after, at least for a few hours, he felt more at ease.
After taking a quick bath, he headed straight to his office to start his daily work, only to find a platter of food awaiting him on his desk. Shaking his head, he sat down and ate what Elrond had left for him, knowing that he would get a lecture if he did not. He had just started going over the monthly accounts when he heard a knock on his office door, “Enter.”
Elrond quietly entered Erestor’s office and came to sit in the chair before his desk. He searched Erestor’s face for any signs of yesterday’s distress, then asked, “How do you fare this morn, mellon nín (my friend)?”
Erestor sat back in his chair and replied, “I am well rested. And you, how are you, mellon nín?”
“I am fine. I came in to make sure you were still up for this afternoon’s council meeting?” Elrond asked, knowing full well what Erestor’s answer would be.
Erestor arched a brow at him, “Of course I am.”
Elrond hid his smile by standing then and said, “Then I will see you later, mellon nín.”
Erestor watched Elrond walk to the door and just before he made it out to the hallway, he called, “Elrond?”
Turning back to look at Erestor, Elrond asked, “Yes?”
Erestor took a deep breath and looked into Elrond’s eyes, “Hannon le (Thank you).”
Elrond smiled and with a nod left to make his way to his office. He was halfway down the hall when he heard, ““Ada (Daddy)!””
Smiling, he knelt down before his twins, Elladan and Elrohir. Lifting them up into his arms, he asked, “And what are my two little rascals up to?”
“Ada, Lindir is sad,” Elrohir said.
“Yes, Ada,” replied Elladan.
“Is Erestor well?”
“Lindir worries about him.”
“He did not come to The Hall of Fire last night.”
“And he is sad about that.”
Sighing, Elrond carried them to a bench and sat with them on his lap. Elrond kissed each of their brows, then asked, “Where is Lindir now?”
““He is in our chamber.””
“Yes, we could not entice him to come to the dining hall with us,” Elladan said with a pout.
“He cried last night, Ada,” Elrohir said, with tears filling his eyes.
At seeing his twin’s tears, Elladan laced his fingers with Elrohir’s and looked up into his Ada’s eyes for guidance.
Squeezing them tightly, Elrond said, “You can tell Lindir that Erestor was not feeling too well last night, that was the reason why he did not come to listen to his playing. Why do not you two take Lindir to see Erestor this morning, I am sure he would like that, just as Erestor would like to see him.”
Elladan saw the sadness in his Ada’s eyes and reached up to caress his cheek, “Do not be so sad, Ada. Erestor will not be sad forever.”
“Yes, Ada, listen to ‘Dan. One day Erestor will truly smile again.”
Elrond looked at his sons and asked, “And how do you know this, pynnith (young ones)?”
Both Elladan and Elrohir closed their eyes and said, ““We see it, Ada. He will be happy again.””
Elrond could not help the tear that made its way down his cheek and he hugged his sons until he was able to blink the rest away. Kissing each, he then set them on their feet and said, “Hannon le, pynnith. Now go and take Lindir to see Erestor, then I want you to take him to get breakfast.”
Smiling up at their Ada, they both said, ““We will see you later, Ada!”” then ran down the hallway towards the chambers they shared with Lindir.
An hour after Elrond had left his office there was another knock on Erestor’s door and, as before, he called out, “Enter.”
Lindir hesitantly pushed the door open and peered inside Erestor’s office, almost as if he were afraid of what he would see inside.
When Erestor saw the look on Lindir’s face he sighed at the look of fear and uncertainty on the penneth’s (young one’s) face. Putting down the book he had been looking through, he motioned to the chair in front of his desk and said, “Saes (Please) come in, penneth. How are you doing this morning? I am sorry that I missed your playing last night, I did not feel too well, but I am feeling much better now.”
Lindir came forward and sat down. Looking down at his hands, he said, “I am glad you are feeling better.”
“Ai, Lindir, I apologize for not coming last night. Will you play for me this evening?” Erestor asked, trying to coax Lindir to look up at him.
Lindir looked up and saw how sorry Erestor looked and said earnestly, “Erestor, I am not upset with you for not coming to listen to my playing last night, I was just worried about you. I will play for you whenever you wish me to.”
Erestor smiled at him and then noticed the twins just outside in the hallway. “Well, penneth, I see the twins are waiting for you and I have a council meeting in a little while. I will be eating dinner in the dining hall, so I will see you there?”
Lindir jumped up and said, “Yes, of course. Have a good rest of the day, Erestor.”
Erestor nodded and watched as the twins each took one of Lindir’s hands and lead him away. Once they were out of sight, Erestor sat back and thought of Lindir and how much he wished for the Elfling to have latched on to someone else. It was not that Erestor did not love him, it was that he hated not to be able to truly care for Lindir like an Elfling should be cared for. Lindir should be cuddled and shown physical love in the way of hugs and kisses on the brow and pats on the back when he did something right and that was what Erestor could not give him. He was so tired, so tired of fighting his fear, of fighting to keep all the pain inside. Standing up, he walked to the window and looked out towards the east and thought of his best friend. Best friend, and he had yet to confide in Fin. Suddenly a determination came over Erestor. So far, he had yet to fade, after all this time, all the torment that he went through, day in and day out. When Glorfindel returned, he was going to tell him everything, come what may. Either he would finally fade from the pain of breaking down the walls he erected around those horrible memories or he would start to heal. Whatever happened, Erestor knew that he could not go on this way any longer. He could no longer take the pain and guilt he saw in Elrond’s eyes from not being able to heal him and he could not take the longing he saw in Lindir’s eyes.
