Demons

Disclaimer: No, probably not true…

Notes: Sorry that this took me so long, but in the meantime I graduated, finally got the diagnosis of a disease I’ve been having for years, my granddad visited us and when he left my cousin suddenly stood in front of our door. So you see, things have been kinda busy with me. At the end of this chap you’ll find an extended author’s note!

4. Demons

Dom woke up on the floor of his bedroom, feeling incredibly sick. His mouth was dry and his tongue felt at least three times as big as it was supposed to be. Dom stifled a groan when he forced tense muscles to move and sat up, trying to remember why he was lying on the floor like some piece of dirt. Too weak to get up completely Dom leant on his bed with his back, feeling the urge to knock himself unconscious as the events of the night before came back to his mind.

“Alone…” the word tasted foul in Dom’s mouth as fear seemed to overwhelm him. What if Billy had been right and really only wanted to be Dom’s friend? Dom shook his head. No, he was just hallucinating. What had Mr McKellen called it again? Right… Daylight hallucinations.

Angrily Dom crawled on his bed and turned around until he could reach the bottle of vodka lying somewhere on the ground, yelping when he swallowed a mouthful of the clear liquid.

Dom grimaced and brought his fingers to his lips, his eyes widening in horror when he saw that hey were red with blood. Dom’s blood. “Fuck…” Dom cursed as he started shaking again, wrapping his arms tightly around his shivering form as if to savour what little warmth he felt.

Alone…

Mustn’t, mustn’t be alone. Not good…

//Every living creature dies alone…//

“What do you want form me?” Dom yelled, knowing that nobody could hear him. “Why me?” he sobbed, tears streaming freely down his face. “Why must I be alone?” Dom’s voice broke, choked by tears.

“He left me,” Dom said quietly in a voice completely drained of emotions.

McKellen cocked his eyebrows in surprise. “You make it sound as if this was something negative,” McKellen remarked, taking off his glasses. “I think that him leaving you was the best thing that could happen to you.”

Dom shook his head, squeezing his eyes shut to hold back the despair. “Not good. Don’t think so,” he whispered and started rocking back and forth. “Not good at all…”

“Mr Monaghan, Dominic, aren’t you feeling well?” McKellen asked and stood up to get Dom a glass of water. “Here… Drink this.”

Dom accepted the glass, spilling half of its content to the floor as he was shaking so hard.

McKellen took the glass from Dom’s hands. “Please stay calm, Mr Monaghan,” McKellen said in a friendly voice. “Everything’s alright. There’s nothing you have to fear.”

Dom nodded, a bitter glint in his eyes. “Except being alone…”

McKellen shook his head with a deep sigh. “You are not alone, Mr Monaghan. I am here to help you…”

Dom’s voice was shaking with suppressed tears. “You can’t help me if in the end we all die alone…”

“Nobody is alone,” McKellen corrected Dom.

Dom shook his head again. This time more distinctively. “How would you know?” he asked in a flat voice. “You aren’t dead yet.”

Dom put two of the small white pills into his mouth, washing them down with a glass of vodka. He knew that one shouldn’t mess with meds and alcohol, but who cared? The pills were probably placebos anyway…

As he looked up into the mirror Dom was scared at how dead his eyes looked. Angrily he lifted his arm and jammed his fist into the mirror, not able to stand his reflection any longer, not caring as the broken glass cut his knuckles until blood was dribbling down his hands.

Slowly Dom walked into his room, letting his weight pull him down on the mattress of his bed. He pulled his legs up to his stomach until he was rolled up to a tight ball of pain.

Dom’s demons came at night, biting and pulling on his skin with their sharp tiny teeth until it was raw and bleeding, whispering quietly until Dom desperately tried to shut them out by putting his hands over his ears. “Be quiet!” he sobbed, his arms thrashing into the emptiness surrounding him. “Leave me alone!” Dom’s voice broke as again he was shaken violently.

“I told you…” a voice suddenly hissed in a corner of the room and a hopeful glint emerged from the grey depths of Dom’s eyes as his eyelashes fluttered open.

“Billy…” Dom sighed, feeling his tense muscles relax as he stood up, pulling heavy feet towards the strange creature.

“You said you needed some space,” Billy whispered in a mocking voice, his long fingers folded in front of his chest. “Yeah right. Space…” Billy said as if to himself, a cruel smile settling on his white lips.

“Why did you come back?” Dom asked softly, walking closer. “Although I asked you to leave…”

The expression on Billy’s face changed, becoming more loving and caring. “We both know that you didn’t truly want that…” he replied after a while. “But you needed to taste the bitterness of being truly alone.”

“You said you were my friend,” Dom said after a while, breaking the silence between them. “Who are you?” he asked. “I can’t be friends with a stranger…” Dom forced himself to look into Billy’s eyes, their colour so much like green poison.

Billy cocked his head in a very bird-like fashion, a questioning look in his eyes. “I’m Billy,” he simply breathed. “And you are Dommie…”

“No.” Dom shook his head, biting his bleeding lip in concentration. “That’ not what I meant and you know that. Tell me who you are!” he insisted, terrified that he dared to command the strange creature.

Dom never saw Billy move, only felt cold fingers snake around his throat, burning him like ice. “I’m the reason you feel sick in the morning…” Billy hissed in a low voice, his black fingernails gracing the soft skin of Dom’s throat and Dom felt a moan rise in his throat. “And I’m the panic-attack at the end of the day…” His grip tightened around Dom’s throat until Billy suddenly let go of Dom and Dom sunk heavily to the floor.

“Why did you choose me?” Dom coughed, feeling his hurting throat with his hands.

A tender smile appeared on Billy’s lips. “I love you…” he hissed like a snake and brought his hand to his lips, kissing the fingertips that had touched Dom’s skin only moments before. “I’ve been secretly watching you for so long, Dommie… You were such a beautiful little boy….”

Dom shook his head in disbelief. “You’ve been there all my life?” he asked in a flat voice.

Billy nodded dreamily. “The shadow singing little Dommie into sleep…”

“You look better today, Dominic,” McKellen said, a satisfied look on his face. “Did the pills help?”

Dom smiled. “Billy is back…”

McKellen frowned and put on his glasses, scribbling in his notebook. “Didn’t we agree that Billy wasn’t good for you?”

Dom shook his head sincerely. “Billy’s my friend. He’s good for me. Needed to taste the fear…” He brought his hand to his throat and only now McKellen saw the bruised marks on Dom’s pale skin that Billy’s fingers had left. He stood up to take a closer look at them and Dom unwillingly held still.

“Who did this to you, Dominic?” McKellen finally asked.

Dom shook his head. “Billy said, mustn’t tell you.”

McKellen sighed. “Please be reasonable, Mr Monaghan. I can’t help you if you refuse to work with me.”

“Mustn’t tell!” Dom insisted angrily. “I don’t need your help anymore. I have Billy now to help me…”

Tbc…

Notes: Hi there! I thought it was time for a little extended author’s note. I am very much aware of the fact that this is very difficult for you to understand and that there is a big bunch of questions I will have to answer. The problem is that this is told from Dom’s POV which is very limited, because he only knows what Billy tells him. And I think you all have realised that Billy loves to speak in riddles.
I promise that all questions will be answered in the end, but please have a little patience with me, ‘k? Even I as the author can only sketch out where Billy and Dom are leading us.
You are very welcome to ask me if you don’t understand something, but I ask you to understand on your part that some things can’t and won’t be answered yet.

Please keep reading and leave a little comment for us at the exit!!
