Chapter 3 - Vaniel's Decision
Eight years later.....Imladris, Third Age, Year 3017
Vaniel listened gravely to the many reports filtering in from the lands near Imladris. Now fifteen, she was considered old enough to be allowed to listen to the adults as they discussed events beyond their realm. Also, she dearly enjoyed listening to the old Halfling, Bilbo Baggins, as he wove the tapestry of his tales. And so, in this manner, she began in her mind to compare the world of Men, and what little she knew of them, to the world of the Elves. In the past months, events had quickly unfolded that directly impacted Imladris as well as her kinsmen in Lorien. She knew the creature Gollum had been captured by Estel, and she knew that her kin in many places were readying for war against Sauron and his armies. And she also knew that the time of the elves on Middle Earth was almost over.
In her heart, Vaniel realized that life, as she knew it, was slowly coming to an end. For even had the light begun to dim all around them, although Imladris still stood without the Shadow that threatened the outside world.
So it had been in her thirteenth year when Vaniel learned from her mother the truth of her birth and discovery by the elves. Although the news had come as a surprise, Eryniel had spoken with such compassion and tenderness that Vaniel but merely felt the flicker of uncertainty, to be forever dispelled by the knowledge that she was loved, and that she was considered as one of the First Born.
But with this discovery came the knowledge that she would have to make a decision, whether to honor her elven bloodline and the grace of the Valar to sail to the West, or remain and live out her life as a human woman. This weighed heavily on her heart and mind, for she knew full well her Mother would not sail over the Sea until Vaniel had made her choice. Yet she felt her choice could not be made, for how was she to know the world of Men, having never lived outside of the walls of Imladris?
It was this concern that brought Vaniel to her mother, as the last light of day filtered on the horizon. She had found Eryniel contemplating the sky in silence, knowing her mother often yearned for the sea and heard its call within the notes of the music she sang. Once had her songs been merry, but now they were dotted by the sadness that marred all the souls of the Eldalie.
Eryniel heard Vaniel approach and lowered her gentle eyes to her daughter's face. She smiled and held out her hands.
"Come, daughter. Your face bears much sorrow. What lays so heavy on your heart?" Eryniel's wise eyes searched the amber ones that moistened with tears.
"Mother," she lowered her head and Eryniel smiled sadly and caressed the dark curls.
"Daughter," Eryniel said, now understanding the grief of Vaniel's heart, "this is your choice and it is before you. But until your choice is made," she raised Vaniel's chin to meet her eyes, "I will abide by your side and will not sail. This I vow."
Vaniel's eyes closed and tears slowly trailed down her face. "But Mother, how can I know which is the path I am to follow?" Her eyes full of tears glistened in the twilight.
Eryniel wiped the tears from her daughter's face. Her voice was low and musical. "That will the Valar show you. When the time is before you, then will you know. Until then, Vaniel, remember you have me and my love. I shall never forsake you."
Her heart near breaking, Vaniel lowered her head on her mother's chest and wept.
Looking toward the darkening heavens, Eryniel espied Earendil as it began its ascent, her thoughts as far as the bright star that sailed high over Middle Earth.
Several days later, news from Mirkwood reached Imladris that the creature Gollum was being held there by Thranduil and that Estel was once again on the move and this time returning to Imladris. By now, many elves were beginning the true exodus to the Grey Havens, and each day saw more and more depart from Middle Earth.
Vaniel was neither urged nor discouraged by Eryniel or Elrond, both knowing the decision to stay or go was hers alone. But in her heart Vaniel yearned to know the ways of Men and with this intent she came to Elrond one day.
The tall Lord of Imladris listened gravely to Vaniel's words, weighing the matter carefully. Certainly her idea was sound but the timing was wrong and this he told her. Now was not the time for exploring the wilds of the world, whether in search for her path or not, for many great evils were about and none could be spared to travel with her. Elrond fully expected war to come to Middle Earth and this much did he reveal to Vaniel. His counsel was for her to abide still in Imladris and let the Valar be her guide.
Vaniel had listened to the counsel of Elrond's wise words, still determined to seek the realms of Men. Elrond, reading the desires of her heart, reminded her that should any violence come to her, it would doom Eryniel. Knowing his words rang with truth, Vaniel bided her time in thought and contemplation before making a decision.
