Chapter 37
Epilogue - The Undying Lands
Another one hundred years passed and never did Myrddin return to Imladris. Life in the ancient elven realm continued peacefully, and the elves contented themselves with the passing of the seasons, occassionally venturing beyond its borders to spend time in the world of Men.
From these visits came the elves to learn of the great deeds of the wizard that Men called Merlin and of his King, Arthur, and the exploits of his loyal knights.
Time passed in the world of Men and ne'er again did Vaniel and Haldir behold their son.
And so, it came to pass, that one day Vaniel and Haldir sailed from Imladris on the small vessel that comfortably took them from the hidden island, and into the open seas, navigating under darkness. Haldir sailed the small vessel easily, knowing which tributaries to follow until they reached the vast open ocean.
Never having seen the sea before, Vaniel was enthralled and soon her fine voice was heard trilling to the stars while Haldir watched his beloved wife.
As Vaniel's fine voice rose over the dark sea, her song was heard by mortal ears whose towns and villages lay near the coastline. No one knew the source of the sound and some even said it was the elves of fair Avalon, passing swiftly in the night.
And the Valar were also enchanted, for they soon opened the path to the Blessed Realm to the couple. Near dawn Haldir and Vaniel found the Straight Road, following the bright light of the Uttermost West, where the small vessel disappeared from the world of Men, to follow its journey to their new life.
Behind them in the world remained Imladris, safely protected by the magic of the elves. The remaining elves, some of whom had permanently forsaken the Undying Lands, cared for the ancient realm, at times visiting the world of men, their occassional friendships with mortals keeping the legend of the Eldar still alive.
Of the exploits of Haldir and Vaniel in Valinor little is known, although many still speak of the deeds of their son, Myrddin, called Merlin by men and of the great sword Haldir gave him, Excalibur.
But that is another story....for another time....
