Chapter 36/37
Chapter 36/37
He had just been about to tell the part of the story where the girl went into the forbidden wing of the palace when the earth under and the walls around them suddenly began to move. Shuddering he held the sobbing Jamie close, trying to shield the child from the falling stones with his body. Everything around him mingled into a thundering roar of noise, the sound of the stones bursting on the floor mixed with the beating of his heart, Jamie’s sobs and his own helpless screams and whimpers.
He had wanted to die so often but he had never wanted to die like this. And he had never wanted for someone to die with him. And Jamie was only a child! //What about Viggo and the others?// Orlando thought desperately. //They might be dead if MacLachlan found them! And if he hasn’t found them yet? They will be buried here, too!// “Viggo!” he screamed, pulling at his chains in panic.
“Viggo!” The only answer he got was a stone that fell directly onto his ankle, making him howl in pain.
“Viggo!” John yelled, “Don’t stop now! We have to run! This way! Come on!” Viggo shook his head. “No.” he said before dashing into the corridor on his left.
“Viggo!”
He called for Viggo till his voice was raw from screaming and he just could not keep it up any more. “Viggo…” he whispered one last time as a particularly big stone broke from the wall he had been leaning on. He never noticed that the impact of the stones smashed the rings, which fastened their chains to the wall.
Orlando’s eyes closed as the world around him drowned in darkness, only aware of the burning tears in his eyes and the frail whimpering body in his arms.
He smiled as he thought that he heard Viggo scream his name. It was just like the ghost voices he had heard when he had been on his island. And he longed to return there.
“Viggo!” John screamed again, as he stumbled through the rain of stones, barely noticing that Goodie, Frase and Torsten were following him. “Come back! We don’t know if there’s an exit on that side!”
“No!” Viggo yelled without looking back. “I heard him! He’s here, John! Orlando is near! Fuck!” Viggo smashed his fists into against the heavy oak door in front of them and then pushed it open, releasing a pained yelp as he tumbled inside.
“Viggo!” yelled Torsten, who was slightly lagging behind. “Viggo! Say something! Please! What’s the matter? Viggo!?!”
John almost stumbled over his own feet as he ran into the room, closely followed by Frase and finally Torsten. He could not believe what he was seeing.
“What?” Torsten gasped and then stopped dead in his tracks, too, as he took in the sight before them. Viggo was kneeling in a corner of the tomb, bending over Orlando and another human form, who were huddling close together. “Over here!” the Dane yelled. “They’re both unconscious! I can carry Orlando but one of you has to carry the child! They’re still alive!”
“I will!” Frase said instantly, already crossing the room and scooping Jamie up into his arms as he spoke. “There’s another door over there!” Torsten yelled, pointing at something that looked just like another hole in the centuries-old walls. “Run!” he screamed. “The walls won’t hold much longer!”
None of them knew how long they had run till they finally found a way out but it seemed like ages to them. They ran blindly towards the light at the end of the tunnel, too fixed on survival to pay any heed to the stones crashing down around them. Finally they crushed into a thicket of brambles and out into the open,
They fought their way through the thorns, the earth under their feet still rocking gently and finally tumbled onto a grassy clearing among the thorns of the fruit-laden bushes.
They lay there gasping, still unable to believe that they had really gotten out. From the heap of dirt and stone that had once been an entrance to the system of tunnels sunken jagged lines ran across the ground, marking the areas where tunnels had caved in.
“Orlando…” Viggo whispered, moving the still limp form of his beloved into a sitting position. While Frase and Goodie took care of Jamie, who had awoken when they had stumbled outside. “Orlando! Wake up” please…” he begged, tears shining in his eyes as he rocked his lover’s unresponsive body. “Orlando, please! Don’t leave me! I need you!” he sobbed, his voice raw with emotion. “Orlando please! Don’t go where I can’t follow you! Please!”
He held his breath as Orlando eyelids finally fluttered, not daring to hope too early. “Orlando?” he whispered again.
“Viggo?” came the hoarse whisper, barely audibly in the song of the sirens, which were coming towards them. Coming fast. “You’re here? Am I.. dead… then?” “No, my beloved prissy elf,” Viggo grinned in spite of his tears. “You are very much alive. And I intend to keep you that way.”
“Oh…” Orlando said and then, after a while, added “I’m really not dead, then?”
“No…” Viggo sighed, kissing the tip of Orlando’s nose as he almost crushed the young Brit in his embrace. “You are alive. Alive and well. Just like I need you to be.”
Love you too.” Orlando mumbled, exhaustedly resting his head on Viggo’s chest. He sniffed
A few times. “Even though you are a very smelly human.”
“And I love you, elf.” Viggo smiled, closing his eyes as tears continued to spill from them. “I am so glad I got you back in time.”
