Chapter 35 - The Time of the Ring

"He was watching us." Bruinen's voice was gentle. She knew Eridani's heart bled for Haldir.

Eridani kept her eyes focused straight ahead. "I know." she replied.

Bruinen pressed. It would not do anyone good for these two, for whom so much had been sacrificed, to lose each other now. "It is best this way."

Still Eridani did not flinch, "I know."

Bruinen snorted. Elves! Damned stiff necks, all of them! She climbed higher and turned southwest. The great Losatuile gushed below them and toward the west they could see the glint of armor from the elves of Elrond's army. Trees of all sorts came up below them, great Rowans and Elven-trees, the Linden and the Mallorns. Rivers branching into smaller waterways, lakes full of fish. Once they would have slowed down and marveled at the beauty that was Middle Earth, but now they had no time for sightseeing.

Several hours later, Bruinen snorted and spoke, "It has begun, Eridani." Her voice was sad.

"Yes, I know." was Eridani's only reply.

Both lapsed into an uneasy silence as they watched in their mind's eye the terrible sack of Avonea. Bruinen turned her head slightly toward Eridani. "I cannot see him beyond the mist."

Eridani frowned, "Neither can I."

They continued travelling south for another hour or so and then turned east. Eridani's eyes scanned the horizon, but it was Bruinen who spotted it first.

"There!" she cried. "Moving toward Ered Hallas!"

Eridani remembered her vision of the Sphere. The Eagles! "He would not dare attack the emissaries of Manwe!" Her eyes narrowed with determination.

"Bruinen, turn North!" she cried as she reached into her tunic.

The Moon Beast increased her speed, knowing that by now her rider was used to sudden accelerations. Forests, rivers and mountain ranges rushed past below them. After a short distance the awesome majesty of the Ered Hallas came into full view. Tall, cragged mountain peaks, impossibly high, tipped with snow, touching the heavens. And right before them was the mist. It glided silently, its intention obvious. If it came within the eyries of the Eagles then the plan of the Valar would be foiled!

Reaching for the Ring, Eridani put it on her finger. Instantly she was within the Sphere and her vision magnified. She could sense Bruinen beneath her. And she could see the mist as it checked its speed.

"It knows." whispered Bruinen.

The mist stopped and slowly turned, as if to engage them. It was a thing of fog and vapor, grey and dark, black pitch turned into evil incarnate. Inside it, small eyes glittered with malice and hate. It watched them, patiently waiting. Then it began to move slowly toward them.

The Moon Beast held their posit

The mist slowly crept forward, closing the distance between it and the Moon Beast and its rider.

Still the Moon Beast held their position.

Suddenly, a great voice boomed, "Saruman!"

The mist checked its movement. Its eyes glittered, its will intent on carrying out its plan.

The voice came again, "Saruman! Thou snake of darkness. I see you!"

The mist coiled back. This time it knew who it was facing. And it refused to accept the truth! This was no mere elf, for within the lifeforce of the cursed she-elf he recognized the ancient voice. How could the she-elf know and wield the Ring with such power? Her voice carried force and authority within it. Not only the force of the Ring's ancient magic, but the force of her spirit and the authority of the Valar. The mist recoiled and halted its movement, thinking, adapting, plotting.

Suddenly it lunged toward the Moon Beast and its rider only to be stopped by the Ring's magic and the breath of the Valar. This stunned the mist for it had assumed the Valar would never again set foot on Middle Earth. It was paying for the folly of its stupidity, it realized, and fought the pull of the Ring. It felt being drawn into a whirlpool, and it knew its power was being drained. But it had another, and it was glad. It had another and the elf-witch could not stop him! And the Valar would be foiled in the end. Turning once toward the eyries of the Ered Hallas, it lunged its malice just once and sent its energy toward the high crevices. Just one strike would be sufficient.

Eridani saw its intent and cried, her voice thunderous with power. "Saruman!"

But Eridani was too late and had not anticipated the mist's plan. She saw a single bolt of lightning hit a crag above the eyries and send tons of snow hurling toward the Eagles and their roosts. Turning furious eyes toward Saruman's essence, she saw it suddenly fade. It was gone. But she had still to stop the monstrous flow of snow that was cascading down the mountain side, rolling toward the eyries!

Reaching deep into her mind and soul, she closed her eyes, held her hands spread toward the mountain, and whispered, "By Eru, by Illuvatar."

She felt energy drain from her and in her mind's eye she saw the snow turn to a thick, gentle fog. She knew the fog grew warm and saw it caress the eyries.

For the first time since they had encountered the mist, Bruinen spoke. "Well done, my Lady....well done."

Eridani removed the Ring from her hand. "But he escaped us, Bruinen."

The Moon Beast made a fast sweep over the eyries and they both noted several Eagles rising into the air. Making a quick pass over Bruinen and Eridani, they called their thanks and gratitude. And with a cry of, "Elbereth!" the Eagles descended to their mountain home.

Bruinen turned south. "How do we find him now?"

Eridani had a very good idea. "He will have to wait. Something tells me Haldir will have a hand in this."

Bruinen snorted. "Well, at least thee can still say his name. That's something."

Eridani grinned but said nothing. It was best to not goad the Moon Beast at times like these, when she was on the brink of saying, "I told thee so."

Beside, she reflected, there was Yrch to hunt!
