Chapter 33 - The Power of the Ring

"By the powers of the three
earth is bound and tied to thee.
When all the others are no more,
then shall all be as before."

Eridani looked around her. Colors and images blurred iwhirwhirlpools of blinding light. Was this the Void, the wraith-world? It could not be! The Void was supposed to be a colorless world, where no light, no life, could endure. The Void was where Melkor languished, and some said even Sauron. And yet, here, this place was full of color and light, and something else...something growing in intensity.

Sound!

Voices and other sounds she could not decipher assailed her senses. And in the background she could hear singing. She concentrated on this. It was not elven song, nor songs of Men or dwarves.

It was song she had never heard before.

After a while, a sphere appeared before her. She watched it as it grew. She saw it stretch and convulse as if a giant unseen hand was reshaping it. As she watched the sphere, she realized the symphony of sound had ceased. In the center of the vast silence before her there was nothing but the sphere.

And then there wasong.ong. Gentle and hushed at first, it intensified and captivated her. Never had she heard such beauty. She could decipher different tones within the song and her soul rejoiced. She wanted to be a part of that song, to add her voice and her tune to it!

Then the sphere began to turn and on it surface she saw what looked like mountains growing tall and proud. Then rivers and seas emerged. Clouds circled the sphere, and muted at first but louder and louder came voices raised in song. And those voices joined with the First Song she had heard before.

She knew she was being shown the birth of her people, thest Bst Born, and that the voices belonged to them and to Men, the Children of Illuvatar. She knew it was Arda she was watching. And further, she knew the songs she had first heard were the songs of the Valar and Eru-Illuvatar.

Much made sense to her now and she understood why Illuvatar had reshaped Arda once more and why the Ring she wore on her hand had been spared.

All creatures were but a single note in the eternal symphony of Illuvatar. She knew that now, and she understood why the Valar had interceded. All serve the will of Illuvatar. That she realized too.

The sphere turned and a giant Shadow covered its surface. All was dark upon the face of Arda and no light penetrated its gloom. The music of the Eldalie turned to pain and she could hear dischord among the song of the Valar. But a while later she noticed a glimmer, a sliver of light, first in small places and then growing stronger. As she watched, fascinated and horrified, her mind was full of images. She saw Melkor as he walked up and down Arda, bending all to his will. She saw Men and Elves resisting the darkness of Sauron, and she saw the flight of the elves toward the Blessed Realm. She saw that many fell, not only elves, but men, dwarves and other creatures too, and where their spirits journeyed she knew not. And when she thought her heart could stand no more, she was shown an astounding revelation.

The mighty ones were returning, coming to Arda once more! In vast numbers they came, terrible and wondrous to behold. The anguish of her heart subsided as she saw them glide to cover Middle Earth and with them came the song of Manwe! And although she tried to make order out of what she saw, she came to know without knowing that the last was still yet to come.

And then the sphere turned into a translucent crystal.

Fascinated, Eridani watched as the crystal se bee began to show her things. Vast and terrible things. Wondrous and joyful things. She saw the fate of many. And as she watched, her mind understood. Look at them, she thought, all of them! There they are, safe in the hands of Illuvatar...so many of them, so many.... A single tear flowed down her cheek. And in her soul awakened a new strength and resolve. Never would the Shadow be allowed to do this, such hate, such evil, such pain, heaped on the wondrous music which had been a gift to all!

And when the sphere had no more to show her, she knew it was time to act. Middle Earth had but little time and she had even less.

Reaching toward her hand she removed the ring.

Gasping for air, she realized she was still leaning against the Elven-tree. Losing her balance, she reached out to its trunk to prevent falling backward and she felt a strong jolt of energy. Eridani blinked. What was that? She gingerly touched the tree again. She felt it again. Its lifeforce. Looking up she thanked it and felt its gratitude. Shaking her head she walked to the Palace.

No wonder the Valar had saved this Ring. And no wonder Shadow lusted after it.

She resolveat nat neither Saruman or Shadow would steal the ring from her. Not as long as she drew breath.
