Chapter 30 - The Surrender

Haldir walked behind Eridani and gently helped her to stand. Although she accepted his help gladly, she knew she could stand on her own. But the touch of his strong arm was delicious and she wanted to savor it.

"Slow down, you still have to tell him about the Ring." she chided herself. "Time for this later." But her heart apparently had decided to ignore her head.

Taking his offered arm, she walked with him and realized he was headed toward the bedroom. Although she allowed him to guide her inside and noticed he closed and bolted the door behind him, she still had every intention of broaching the subject of the Ring.

Not waiting for him, Eridani sat at the foot of his wide bed and reached into her tunic. She could feel the shape of the ring beneath the garment. Raising her eyes to Haldir, she took his offered hand and allowed herself to be pulled to a stand. Although it was her intention to initiate conversation and tell him of the ring, Eridani was unprepared for what came next.

Looking into her warm chocolate brown eyes, Haldir took her hand, palm up and brought it to his lips.

At the intense pleasure of his tongue gently licking the inside of her hand, Eridani sighed and closed her eyes. She felt him drawing her closer to his body. After a few moments she looked at Haldir. His eyes were dark and intense, like a summer sky before a storm.

"What is this, my Lord?", her voice was husky with emotion and desire.

His eyes darkened even more, "Why, Lady, 'tis love. 'Tis surrender." He ran his tongue lightly over her opened hand and looked into her eyes, "Do you surrender, my heart? I have...I have surrendered to you, to your voice, to your eyes, to your magic. Never again will I dismiss the power you have over me, Lady." His voice was thick, his face conveying the power of his emotions.

Eridani shivered, not realizing her eyes too projected hersionsion, her face open for him to read. She wanted to speak, to answer his impassioned declaration, but all she could do, overcome by her feelings for him, was to sigh and lean her head on his strong chest. Then sighing more deeply and raising her eyes to his dear face, she brought her other hand to stroke his hair. His eyes closed and he leaned into her touch.

Opening his eyes, he lowered his gaze to her lips and her eyes meet his. She partly opened her mouth and he accepted the invitation.

His lips were gentle, suckling her mouth, tasting her but not deepening the kiss. He pressed her against his body and she felt his desire for her. Slowly he released her and broke the kiss. Eridani moaned in protest. Haldir grinned.

"Nay, Lady, there is naught for us but to wed, for you try my self control and I will not dishonor you. You are a Lady of the realm, niece and sister to Kings. Melian's bloodline courses through your veins. I will not take you as a doxy." His face looked so young and defenseless, belying his true age. His eyes quietly contemplated her bewildered expression and he grinned.

Eridani's eyes softened, and she arched an eyebrow in mock anger "Indeed? My Lord am I to consider this a formal proposal of a union between our families?" She crossed her arms.

Haldir laughed. "Indeed, my Lady. A most formal proposal." He held her at arm's length. "Think first, Eridani. Think before you decide. I would not have you take me as husband if there are doubts in your mind." His voice was steady and earnest.

Eridani studied his handsome face. She knew she loved him, and would for all the ages of the world. But his reasoning was sound. Who knew what doom awaited them. Love at a time like this was a precious commodity, and his life up to now had made little room for it. If Eadril was never found and Ronihim did not recover from his madness, then the Council of Avonea would most likely elect Haldir as Lord of Thalion Tirion. She, as his wife, would be his Lady. Would she be able to accept this responsibility? She was not certain.

Realizing Haldir was right, once again, she nodded. "Yes, I will consider your words, Haldir." She reached up and kissed his lips gently.

Smiling, Haldir opened the door toward his private baths. "Before we proceed, I believe we are both in need of bathing." He turned and walked inside the baths, returning a few moments later, carrying several towels. Handing them to Eridani, he grinned, "And both of us reek most awful." Turning from her, he began to release his braids.

Eridani froze. With his back to her, he did not realize she was still standing rooted to the spot, clutching the towels to her chest. By now all thoughts of the Ring were forgotten. She watched with fascination and desire as he worked his braids free.

Haldir, feeling a distinct increase in the chamber's temperature, turned and smiled gently at the expression on Eridani's face. He was glad he had restrained himself, for in all things she showed her true innocence. He was not going to rush this, not with such a precious jewel as Eridani Istalindir.

Chuckling to himself, and somewhat embarrassed at the open admiration in her eyes, he opened the door to the baths and pointed. "Here, this way, Lady."

With a small smile, Eridani walked in and turned. Gently and quietly, he closed the door, leaving her to bathe in private.

Inside the bath, Eridani noticed the warm pool of water. The room was shady and cool, several glowing candles releasing a delicious aroma that reminded her of his personal scent. Removing her clothes, being careful to keep the Ring hidden in her tunic, she stepped into the delicious warm water and began to rub the scented oils and powders on her body and hair. The small open wounds from the cuts and abrasions stung her bue kne knew they had to be cleaned of the dirt and grime so that the healing process could proceed at a faster rate. After a while, she climbed out of the bath and wrapped a towel around her body and one for her hair.

She realized then she had no clothes to change into. And that Haldir was outside waiting his turn.

Stepping to the doshe she cracked it open and hissed his name. She jumped back when an anxious pair of green eyes appeared out of nowhere. Eridani relaxed. It was Nuadthriel, one of her ladies.

"Oh my Lady, the Lord Haldir bid me attend to you in his chamber." Nuadthriel's voice held a tinge of worry.

Eridani held the door open and peered out, "Is he here?"

Nuadthriel shook her head, "Nay, Lady, he has moved to the western wing." The she elf's eyes widened at the number of cuts and bruises on the parts of Eridani's body that the towel did not cover.

Reaching out with a gentle trembling hand, Nuadthriel cooed, "Oh my Lady, what did they do to you?" Tears glistened in her eyes.

Eridani smiled, "Nay, do not weep. All is well now." She smiled at the young maiden. She stepped into the room and noticed with relief that Nuadthriel had brought her a fresh change of clothes and blessed Valar, some food and drink.

Dressing rapidly, she ate slowly, not wishing to be sick. The drink brought to her contained healing herbs to restore her strength and soon she was beginning to feel like her old self.

Turnto Nto Nuadthriel, she gave her some basic instructions for the day. Nuadthriel shook her head, "Nay, my Lady, the Lord Haldir has very explicit orders that you will use his chambers until further notice. Why, I do not know." She had lowered her eyes.

At this Eridani wondered if there was more to the present turn of events than Haldir was letting on. She realized he had brought her to his chambers, completely bypassing her own rooms. Why? Was there a danger here?

Determined to find out and to tell him about the Ring, she asked Nuadthriel where Haldir was at that very moment.

"In the stables, my Lady."

Reaching for the Ring inside the tunic where it was still hidden, she clasped it firmly in her hand and set out for the stables. She must find him and tell him what she had discovered. It was imperative!
