Chapter 30 - Athryn

She sailed through the trees, quickly sprinting from bough to limb to branch, the wind whipping her hair back. She was oblivious to the smoke and the embers, her mind only recognizing that she was free. She was free!

Her slender fingers grasped a tiny leaf and she sniffed it. Green, she thought, it smells green. Then the wind blew and she smelled gray. What was it about gray? She did not like gray. Gray burned.

And with that memory came the pain and she wailed a low keen, growing in volume as her memory crowded her mind.

The gray was death. Yes, it was death, and it stank and it stabbed her over and over until her mind only saw red.

Screaming now, she moved to another tree, and off to the distance her eyes caught the red. The red! There it was! She knew the red and she hated it. Her lips parted in a sneer, and a low growl came from deep inside her, menancing, angry.

Below her, Haldir stopped in his tracks. He listened again. Had he heard what his ears told him he had heard? Or was he imagining it?

Above him the trees were thick with gray-white smoke and he knew he had ventured far deeper than was safe, but he needed to see if the first firelines had stopped the advancing flames and he was not going to sacrifice another archer for that.

Walking carefully, crouching here and there, his eyes soon saw small fires as they moved to join. He saw the circular trenches the elves had dug, making a fireline to stop the fires from spreading. He calculated that with luck this part would starve itself within a few hours and he was satisfied with the work done. The elves had moved very quickly and thus had kept the flames from spreading too far. That, he thought, and the rains of days before had kept the woods moist. That of itself was a small miracle.

Just then came a sound high above him and he immediately turned to scan the tree tops. Haldir's eyes narrowed and his breath suddenly skipped as he recognized the silhouette that deftly jumped from tree to tree.

"Athryn!" Haldir's voice rang out in the forest. "Athryn!" He called again to no avail. His eyes following her movements, Haldir realized she was headed straight for the fires. Soon there would be no branches to jump to because they had been stripped in order to curb the fires' fuel. Not knowing this, Athryn could mistake a jump and fall to the fires!

Jumping onto a nearby branch, Haldir quickly reached Athryn's level and quickened his pace so as to overtake her and head her off.

Within moments Haldir was within striking distance of Athryn's back and he lunged forward.

Feeling a presence behind her, Athryn turned just at the same time Haldir reached for her and she screeched. It was the red again! Her mind reeled, and it burned her!

Haldir was unprepared for her strength and fell back as Athryn shoved him with all of her strength. Nearly toppling out of the tree, he jumped and tackled her, bringing her down by the legs. Athryn kicked and howled, half turning and grabbing Haldir's hair.

The pain that assailed him when Athryn pulled his hair stunned Haldir for a moment, but he did not relinquish his hold. Athryn bucked and screamed, releasing his hair and then tumbling toward a wide branch where they both sprawled, Haldir still holding her legs. Athryn turned and sat, bringing her hands to Haldir's face and raking her nails over his face, scratching him from scalp to chin and then lunging toward him, screeching and biting his shoulders, his hands, his neck and any flesh that she could come into contact with, hating the burning skin that seared her own.

Haldir fought to keep them both from falling and from being bitten to death, but in her madness Athryn was proving far stronger than he had anticipated. He felt the sting of blood in his eyes from the deep gouges on his forehead and then he lost his balance as Athryn bit into his thigh.

Grabbing her by the hair, Haldir pulled Athryn's head back, conscious suddenly of being weightless, and too late realizing they had both fallen from the branch. Trying to turn his body around in mid-fall, he saw little since more blood pooled into his eyes. But his nostrils were clear and he smelled the heat before he felt it scorch his skin. A hard thud followed and then there was only searing pain as he fought to douse the flames that licked on his arms and hands. When the flames no longer burned him, Haldir turned, now completely blinded and searched with his other senses, calling out softly.

"Athryn?"

Receiving no response, he laid back for a moment, sniffing the air, trying to sense in which direction the wind came so that he could move in the opposite direction.

After a few minutes, Haldir began slowly moving, crouching low on the ground, following the direction of the wind, where it smelled clear and less smoky. He had no idea where Athryn was, his thoughts instead turned to Vaniel.
