Summary this Chapter: A new future for Glorfindel’s Dark Star.
A/N: Durel in this chapter is the equivalent of a fifteen year old human.

Glorfindel finished bathing the shivering, feverish body laying on his bed. He smoothed back sweat soaked hair from uncomprehending eyes and pulled the sheets over the small body. The babe had passed, and now they simply waited for the drug to leave Durel’s system.
“My little dark star…” he murmured as he placed a kiss on the boy’s head.
“I did not want to believe the rumors from the staff, but I now see they were well founded.”
Glorfindel turned toward the sound of the voice, and nearly winced when he saw his mother standing in the doorway.
“Your father will have that child back on the street in a moment when he finds out you have another one in his home,” said the lady as she came to stand near the bed.
Glorfindel sighed and bowed his head in acknowledgement. When he had first started taking in elflings, he had offended the high lords of the courts. None had been more offended than his own father. With the entire council against his actions, Glorfindel had done what it took to save what children he could. The stipulation was that he could care for no more than one elfling at a time. Each child must reach majority and find a career before he could take another ward, and so far he had stuck to the rules, believing that something was better than nothing.
Now he had two children under his protection, and he was not releasing either of them if he could help it.
His mother stroked his hair consolingly. “Maybe…maybe you could convince them that this child is here for your pleasure? They would not begrudge you such a….pet. If fact, I believe they would encourage you.”
“I could never take a child in such a filthy way,” he said hotly.
“I know that, my son. However, they do not. As far as they are concerned, you are just the same as they, deep down.”
Glorfindel moved from his kneeling position and sat on the side of the bed, and his mother took up a chair close by.
“If I do this, he will never be able to attend school. I couldn’t even get him a tutor without suspicion, for the Valar’s sake! He would be nothing but a pretty conversation piece. I would not wish that life on him.”
“It is either that or life on the streets, Glorfindel. You are very quickly running out of options.”
They sat in silence for a moment, listening to the harsh breaths and quiet moans of pain coming from the boy on the bed. Glorfindel absently caressed the boy’s hair as he sat contemplating the child’s future, marveling at the softness of the locks beneath his fingers.
“Maybe you could have him trained as a Courtesan.”
Glorfindel raised his eyebrow at that. The Courtesans of Gondolin were renowned throughout elvendom. They were highly coveted and sought after by lords and kings. The Courtesans were known for their intelligence, cunning, and wit. They served as entertainers, musicians, companions, and they could even act as stewards and councilors.
Most importantly, however, they were held in awe for their abilities in the bedroom. Some say they could make a man come with just single touch. Some say that they could make a man come with no touch at all. He knew the King himself had three personal Courtesans that also acted as his Councilors. However, he had never been privileged enough to hear the stories from the King regarding the bedroom talents of his Courtesans. He had seen the three beauties dance one of the old dances in the halls of the palace one night, and he had been struck dumb by their beauty and grace.
The training of a Courtesan was tedious and outrageously expensive. That is, if the one you wanted trained was even accepted into an apprenticeship. Glorfindel had the money. That was no issue. But was the boy intelligent enough to qualify for an apprenticeship? Did he have what it takes to become one of the legendary Courtesans? What the boy needed to be accepted he had no idea. Odds were unlikely that the small, strict society would not allow one such as Durel into their illustrious ranks, but it would be worth a try.
After careful consideration, Glorfindel nodded his head. “I’ll send word to the Chief Courtesan to seek a meeting. This seems the best path for now.”
His mother nodded and stood gracefully. She stood near the bed and caressed a flushed cheek. “He has a beauty that I have never seen before. I hope his mind is as cutting as his looks.”
******************************
Maikasilmë, Chief Courtesan of Gondolin sat gracefully in an overstuffed chair in Glorfindel’s office. The golden lord nearly felt intimidated by the piercing gaze of the elleth in front of him. He couldn’t help but think she was aptly named as her silver starlight eyes seemed to cut him to shreds in a matter of seconds.
“So, my Lord,” she asked in a voice that spoke of dark pleasures and unmeasured intelligence. “I hear you have a candidate for Courtesan training.” She raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow at him. Her silvery blond hair was twisted and styled into a flawless coif on the top of her head that only served to flaunt the allure of her features all the more. Her robes were immaculate and fit her little body like a second skin, and they put all of her best assets on display without seeming vulgar. She was, over all, absolutely perfect. However, Glorfindel had a darkling child in his bedroom that he personally thought put this elleth’s beauty to shame.
“I do have one I would like to enter into Courtesan training. He is currently in the adjoining room, and I would be greatly pleased if you would be able to tell me if he is suited to apprenticeship with you.”
“I would love to see your candidate. If you would lead the way?”
Glorfindel stood and took the Courtesan’s arm to guide her into his bedroom. He released her arm as she spotted the boy laying on the bed. She let out a quiet gasp upon seeing the dark boy, letting her perfect mask fall for a moment. Composing herself, she advanced on the sleeping child. “He is a beauty the likes of which have never been seen,” she commented as she leaned down to get a better look.
Glorfindel’s little Dark Star was recovering slowly. The dark smudges under his eyes and the pallor of his cheeks bespoke of his recent trials. The little one was currently sleeping, however; it was no longer the induced torpor of the terribly ill, but the light reverie of his kind. Chocolate eyes blinked slowly as he awakened. Glorfindel smiled and sat on the opposite side of the bed from where the Courtesan stood. The Lord took the boy’s hand when he looked to him for guidance.
“This is Maikasilmë, the Chief Courtesan of Gondolin,” Durel nodded in greeting to the elleth. “She is going to talk to you for awhile. I will be in the office working on my paperwork if you need anything, my star.”
The dark head nodded again as Glorfindel gave his hand a last squeeze and left the room. He weakly propped himself up on the pillows, still too drained to properly greet the lady.
“You have the beauty it takes to become one of us,” started the Courtesan who now sat on the side of the bed. From her small bag she pulled out a set of what looked to be playing cards. She looked into the child’s eyes and smiled cunningly. “Let’s see if you have the mind. I am going to show you these cards, one at a time. When I have gone through the entire deck, I want you to tell me, in order, what cards you were shown. Begin.”
She flipped through the cards at a moderate pace and the boy stared at each card in turn. When the last card was flipped over, she looked at the darkling expectantly.
He raised an eyebrow at the slightly smug look on her face. “This was just too easy. Two of hearts, three of spades, six of diamonds…” he named every card, in order, as the Courtesan reviewed the deck. When he finished, he smiled and looked up at Maikasilmë with pride.
She quirked her mouth. “Now say them backwards.”
His smile diminished slightly, but he once again went through the cards listing them in order, only backwards. “Good. Very good. Few have the type of memory you are showing me. It is required of Courtesans to have a vast and quick memory. Training is fast paced and we cannot take the time to teach you at the speed which normal elves learn. If at any time you fall behind, you will be removed from the program. Now, for the last test.” She leaned forward until her hands rested on his cheeks, and her forehead was pressed to his. He stilled as he felt the most odd sensation he had ever experienced. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the strange feeling, quickly realizing that the Courtesan had invaded his mind. He pushed with all his might, disliking the feeling of another rummaging around inside his thoughts. Maikasilmë jerked back as if she had been physically pushed and stared at the young one expressionlessly for moment. Slowly, a smile formed on her face and she extended her hand. “Welcome to the ranks of the Courtesans of Gondolin.”
