Chapter 28 - Reunion

As the group drew closer to Avonea, Eridani could see the tall golden and silver spires that marked the watchtowers of the city. They followed an unmarked trail within the great woods which woits its way around the banks of the Aina Eska. Eridani sniffed the brisk air and could smell the sweet, clear scent of the mighty river. She sighed. She was truly home.

Doggedly following the elven archers, she realized they had come to the road leading to the gates of Avonea. The elves visibly relaxed and soon began making small talk amongst themselves. Eridani listened attentively but said nothing. It gladdened her heart to hear small talk of home and family. Ormuil's face came into her mind and her heart grew heavy. How would Haldir greet her? She fingered her tunic and felt the ring.

Dusk was setting in by the time they were within sight of the gates. She saw that a crowd had gathered there, realrealized that word of her return had already reached the city.

Eagerly looking for Haldir, she noticed sadly he was not there. Eridani knew that if Haldir did not greet her upon her arrival, he would be waiting for her in the receiving hall of the great Palace. Her spirit damped. She was not looking forward to the meeting. Yet she had a duty to do and a report to make. Straightening her shoulders and fixing her gaze stoically ahead of her, she marched forward and entered the cof Aof Avonea. Small smiles greeted her, curious stares and disapproving clucks from the older ones. Dressed as a warrior, dirty and grimy as she was, she was definitely not the picture of elven grace and beauty. She steeled herself away frhe che curious stares, although she was grateful for the few warm smiles she was able to pick out. At least not everyone had turned against her.

Eridani noticed the city was in mourning for slalveslves and eagle. Standards were draped with black cloth, as were the lamp posts. The joyous spirit that marked Avonea was dulled and gray. And she felt she was responsible for it.

Her heart under an iron will, she turned her head toward the elf captain, who was now speaking to her.

"My Lady, my journey ends here for I must return to the borderlands. You will be escorted to Lord Haldir. May Elbereth bless you." The archers bowed respectfully.

Eridani smiled sadly, "Thank you, Captain." She did not have the energy to say more.

An elven escort arrived just then and she was escorted to the Palace grounds. Eridani looked at the guards' faces. Neither recognition or condemnation showed there. But then again, she knew, they had been trained to reveal no emotion. Still, an escort of four guards was unusual. Was she under detention?

Inside the PalaEridEridani noticed how quiet it was. Where was everybody? The bustling, noisy errands Ministers sent their messangers on; where were the murmured conversations? Why was it so quiet?

Escorted directly to the receiving hall, Eridani was shocked to see no one in the anteroom. How could that be? This was the heart of Palace activity, where politicians, merchants, trers, ers, and anyone caring to live or conduct business within Thalion Tirion was brought. Why was it so empty?

She steeled herself as one of her escorts tapped the closed door. She would fiut sut soon.

The heavy wooden doors opened and Eridani stepped forward. Her eyes nervously darted around the room, recognizing Haldir's Commanders. She cautiously waited to be recognized. They stood around a large round table, their backs to her. They seemed to be studying a map of some sort.

Her body tensed. Was she going to be treated as if she were invisible? Apparently no one had heard her enter! Were they that engrossed? She decided to break the silence.

"My Lords..." she began.

Immediately the Commanders turned, hands on the hilt of their swords. She noticed others had drawn their short daggers, their faces somber, their eyes guarded. What was this? What folly? Obviously they did not recognize her. Slowly reaching up to her hair, showing her scraped hands were free of weapons, she released her long brown hair. Letting it cascade down her back, she noticed recognition slowly registering on their faces. One by one they sheathed their weapons. Finally someone stepped forward.

"My Lady!" she turned to face the source of the voice. It was Tamarcil. Coming round the others, he held out his hands in welcome, and Eridani reached out to take his strong hands.

"My Lady" he gently squeezed her hands in his larger ones. "We thought you lost." His voice lowered.

Eridani noticed the others had relaxed but still stood watching her. She brought her gaze to Tamarcil's face. "Indeed, I too believed never again would I set foot on this fair city." She smiled her thanks. Just then the others broke into small smiles and words of welcome. She nodded in response to their greetings.

"My Lords, I bear news of gravest importance." She suddenly began, walking toward the round table. They cleared the way for her. Just as she suspected, they were studying several maps.

Turning to them, she asked in a clear voice, "Where is my Lord Haldir?"

"Here." Haldir's strong voice rang out behind her. She whirled to face him.

Had he become more beautiful in the short span of days they had been apart? His lifeforce seemed to glow with an even greater intensity. Or was she that tired?

He strode into the room and she realized he had red red through the gardoor.oor. Walking around the elves gathered beside her, Haldir studied her face and then lowered his eyes to cover her body. Whatever he felt he concealed well, but Eridani had to take a deep breath. She studied his face attempting to read his feelings. She couldn't. The mask he wore for strangers who trespassed border lands was firmly in place. She could read nothing in his eyes either. She felt her heart shrink in pain.

It was obvious to everyone in the room that Eridans cls close to collapsing. Haldir admired her spirit. Walking up to her, he reached out and drew her close to him. He felt her body tense.

"I am here." he whispered into her hair, and felt her relax somewhat. He closed his eyes. What had she endured? Her body seemed whole, although he had not missed the many cuts, scrapes and bruises. He knew what Yrch did to elven females. He continued to hold her with closed eyes and without realizing it began to stroke her hair.

Slowly, his Commanders cleared the room.

Eridani held on to Haldir as if he were her last breath of air. She took in his masculine scent, so warm and inviting. He smelled of woods and spices. Letting herself lean heavily against him she opened her spirit. Soon tears cascaded down her cheeks and her body shook with strong sobs.

Haldir knew she was near a total collapse and picked her up in his strong arms. He saw her eyes were closed and tears ran down her cheeks. His heart wrenched inside his chest. His love for this Young One was threatening terwherwhelm him.

Exiting the receiving hall through the same door he'd come in, he walked quickly past the gardens, avoiding her rooms and making straight for his own. She needed rest and decided that the presence of her ladies may interrupt her slumber. He knew it was an illogical argument to make, but he felt she'd be safer in his rooms. As he walked he felt a great weight on her spirit. He felt it reach out to him in its agony. What had happened to her?

Entering his room, he walked to the bed and gently placed Eridani on it and stepped back to look at her.

Her hands were bruised, nearly raw in some places, her face showed bruises, some already turned purplish blue. Had she been tortured? Sitting at the edge of the bed, he stroked her hair. She moved instinctively toward him and placed her head on his lap. Softly caressing her face, careful to avoid the bruised areas, he began a low lullaby. Soon Eridani slept and Haldir was left to ponder his own emotions.
