the marriage
Thranduil looked at them, “Well that’s good news”
Legolas smiled “Will you wed us?”
Haldir looked from the one to the other but kept silent.
Thranduil gave a nod, “Yes my king”
Legolas’ eyes widened, “No no, now you’re back I want you to be king again”
Thranduil smiled, “Only if you are sure about it”
Legolas smiled and nodded “I will go and send the invitations now so we can get married as soon as possible”
Haldir smiled and gave him a quick kiss before Legolas walked off.
Thranduil looked at him “Are you not angry at me?”
Haldir smiled “I hold no anger against you, all is forgiven, all I want is the blessing for the marriage”
*Two days later*
They abandoned the idea that Thranduil would consecrate the marriage, now Elrond was the one who was going to do it.
Haldir stood restless waiting for Legolas.
Thranduil and Legolas were walking down the isle.
Haldir took Legolas’ hand when Thranduil had given him and smiled.
Elrond started the ceremony.
“Marriage is a supreme sharing of experience, and an adventure in the most intimate of human relationships. It is the joyous union of two people whose comradeship and mutual understanding halowelowered in romance. Today Haldir Serevin and Legolas Oropher proclaim their love and commitment to the world, and we gather here to rejoice, with and for them, in the new life they now undertake together.
The joy we feel now is a solemn joy, because the act of marriage has many consequences, both social and personal. Marriage requires "love", a word we often use with vagueness and sentimentality. We may assume that love is some rare and mystical event, when in fact it is our natural state of being.
So what do we mean by love? When we love, we see things other people do not see. We see beneath the surface, to the qualities, which makes our beloved special and unique. To see with loving eyes, is to know inner beauty. And to be loved is to be seen, and known, as we are known to no other. One who loves us, gives us a unique gift: a piece of ourselves, but a piece that only they could give us.
We who love, can look at each other's life and say, "I touched his life," just as an artist might say, "I touched this canvas." "Those brushstrokes in the comer of this magnificent mural, those are mine. I was a part of this life, and it is a part of me." Marriage is to belong to each other through a unique and diverse collaboration, like two threads crossing in different directions, yet weaving one tapestry together.
The secret of love and marriage is similar to that of religion itself. It is the emergence of the larger self. It is the finding of one's life by losing it. Such is the privilege of partners; to be each himself and yet another, to face the world strong, with the courage of two.
To make this relationship work, therefore, takes more than love. It takes trust, to know in your hearts that you want only the best for each other. It takes dedication, to stay open to one another, to learn and grow, even when it is difficult to do so. And it takes faith, to go forward together without knowing what the future holds for you both. While love is our natural state of being, these other qualities are not as easy to come by. They are not a destination, but a journey.
The true art of married life is in this an inner spiritual journey. It is a mutual enrichment, a give and take between two personalities, a mingling of two endowments which diminishes neither, but enhances both.”
Elrond then took a breath to continue when Haldir told him to go on with the next.
Elrond smiled “Haldir, do you take Legolas as your partner in life till death will take you apart?’’
Haldir smiled “I do”
Cheers sounded from his brothers.
Elrond silenced them and continued “and do you Legolas take…”
Legolas didn’t have the patience to let him finish it. “I do”
Elrond smiled, “Then you now may take your vows”
Haldir turned to Legolas “I take you Legolas, to be my partner in life and my one true love.
I will cherish our friendship and love you today, tomorrow, and forever.
I will trust you and honour you
I will laugh with you and cry with you.
I will love you faithfully through the best and the worst,
Through the difficult and the easy.
What may come I will always be there.
As I have given you my hand to hold
So I give you my life to keep”
Legolas’ eyes filled with tears of happiness and he started with a shaky voice “I take you Haldir to be my partner in life and my one true love.
I will cherish our friendship and love you today tomorrow, and forever
I will trust you and honour you
I will laugh with you and cry with you.
I will love you faithfully through the best and the worst,
Through the difficult and the easy.
What may come I will always be there.
As I have given you my hand to hold
so I give you my life to keep”
The two looked into each other’s eyes and said together, “Entreat me not to leave you, or to return from following after you,
For where you go I will go,
and where you stay I will stay.
Your people will be my people,
and where you die, I will die and there I will be buried.
May the Lord do with me and more if anything but death parts you from me.”
Elrond smiled and said, “The wedding ring is the outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual bond, which unites two loyal hearts in endless love. It is a seal of the vows Haldir and Legolas have made to one another. Bless O Valar these rings, that Haldir and Legolas, who give them, and who wear them, may ever abide in thy peace. Living together in unity, love and happiness for the rest of their lives”
Haldir smiled and slid the ring on Legolas’ finger “I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honour you. In the name of the Valar, with this ring, I thee wed.”
Legolas felt tears now rolling over his cheeks “I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honour you. In the name of the Valar, with this ring, I thee wed.”
Elrond looked at Thranduil who wiped away a tear and smiled “ In as much as you have each pledged to the other your lifelong commitment, love and devotion, I now pronounce you partners for live, in the name of the Valar. Those whom the Valar have joined together let no one put asunder. You may kiss your beloved.”
Haldir smiled and cupped Legolas head, a few tears slipped from his eye and wiped Legolas’ tears away with his thumbs as Legolas did the same.
Legolas pulled Haldir to him and kissed him tenderly.
Haldir smiled and wrapped his arms around his beloved and deepened the kiss.
Loud cheering sounded from the guests.
Legolas smiled “I love you”
Haldir smiled “I love you too, forever and always”
