Chapter 25 - Bruinen, the Moon Beast
Haldir had learned a great deal from the Moon Beast. He learned its name was Orphanium, that he was about 500 years old and that this was considered an advanced lifespan for a Moon Beast. Haldir also learned that they did not consider themselves true Ms, bs, but instead called themselves the Vardhin, which to Haldir resembled Sindarin for Children of Varda. When Haldir had explained to Orphanium his idea that his kind may be the Moon Beasts of the Oracle of Thror, the old creature had merely snorted but remained silent.
Still, there was a greater mystery here Haldir realized, for Orphanium would speak at greangthngths about many topics, save oracles and legends. Frustrated, Haldir had decided to allow the animal to set the pace and divulge what it desired and when. But Orphanium remained content in explicitly providing Haldir with details of their lives, and how they lived it. For his part, Haldir paid attention, for he knew that perhaps something important may be revealed. He learned, for example, that the Moon Beasts lived in loose family units comprised of five or six females two two males, but the actual number of Moon Beasts was unknown at the time. Orphanium estimated that there may be several thousand Moon Beasts in all of Middle Earth.
That revelation had staggered Haldir. That creatures could exist in such numbers and be outside of the knowledge of elves or men was unheard of. That the Moon Beasts had evaded discovery this long was doubly surprising. But how this was possible was made clear to the elves when they were taken to one of the many secret oases that the Moon Beasts visited from time to time.
Here, on the northern marshes of the Morthond Salque, the Moon Beasts had discovered a small waterfall hidden amidst a short mountain range which Haldir had not known existed. How many other surprises did this new Middle Earth hold, Haldir pondered.
Safe and protected from the harsh and hot desert winds, the elves rested for a half a day and then the talks with Orphanium had begun in earnest. Haldir learned that the Moon Beasts had spotted Yrch in the distance, east of the Plains, but had steered clear of the foul creatures, not wishing to be discovered. Haldir explained the situation to the Moon Beast and questioned him and his memories of the Old Middle EarThe The animal had some memories, but these were fragmented and vague. Yet, the Moon Beasts had recollections of the War of the Ring, the Elves, Lorien and Galadriel. Haldir also learned that each Moon Beast possessed an independent memory of many things and that some chose to remember while others did not.
It was eventually decided that Orphanium would meet with the other families of Moon Beasts and alert them that a possible Yrch attack may come to Middle Earth. He did not know what action the others may wish to take as this was the time of birthing for the females, rendering them vulnerable. Although this was not what Haldir had expected, he certainly really didn't know what to expect, he accepted the situation with grace and warned Orphanium to move his herd as far from Asto Nuut as possible. Orphanium nodded his understanding.
As they readied to return to Avonea, Orphanium offered to send three of his strongest sons back. Haldir considered the offer and was about to decline when the Moon Beast fixed him with a glare and said, "Best not to decline an offe fri friendship in these times, Haldir. Perhaps a daughter instead of a son? Thou knowest not what may come."
Haldir frowned at these words. He'd come to learn the Moon Beast spoke in archaic riddles at times, but this seemed to be a warning of sorts.
"Know you something?" Haldir slung his quiver behind him and checked his knives and sword. His hair was lifted by the gentle breeze that blew across the waterfalls. The Moon Beast sighed.
"The beauty of thy kindred is taken under our skin." Oprhanium's lips broke into a sgringrin. " 'Twould seem our females are enamoured of thee." His small ears pricked at the sound of the elf's gasp.
Halting, Haldir turned and stared. "What say you?" He exclaimed dismayed. "Say not so, old one." The small smile on Haldir's lips did not reach his eyes. His mind suddenly brought up the image of a brown-eyed elleth.
Orphanium tossed his head in the direction of a young female Moon Beast, who lolled close to the water's edge, far enough to not be seen as intrusive, but close enough to admire the elven warriors who were making ready to depart.
Haldir followed Orphanium's gaze. "Your daughter?" He asked amazed.
The Moon Beast snorted. "Thy beauty is hard to match and thy skin is now within hers." The creature snorted again.
"She desires to depart with thee."
Haldir shook his head. "Nay. That cannot be." His voice was firm but tinged with sadness, he returned his attention to his gear.
Orphanium's voice was low. "Say thee as you wish. Still, a Moon Beast by thy side is not a cause for distress." His tone was gentle, but chiding at the same time.
Haldir signaled the elves to begin moving out and they fanned into groups of three, as usual. He turned to the creature and placed his hand on its muzzle. He had come to learn this was a sign of affection between their kind. Orphanium's bright eyes smiled gently. Haldir thought quickly and remembered Eridani's words. Perhaps these creatures were part of whatever plan was beginning to unfold. Here may very well be the path the Valar was placing before him. He studied the Moon Beast.
"I have reconsidered. Your words carry wisdom. Perhaps this is the will of Illuvatar. I will allow your daugher to return with us to Avonea." Haldir stepped away from the Moon Beast.
Orphanium nodded his thanks and at once a shrill flute-like whistle droned out all other sounds. The Moon Beasts turned and looked in his direction. The sign was given. Haldir would take the female Moon Beast back to Avonea. He hoped he was doing the right thing. Looking toward the young female he spoke instead to Orphanium.
"Does she speak Quenya?"
Orophanium nodded, "As well as the Common Speech, Sindarin and a few other archaic tongues."
Haldir frowned. This was an interesting turn. Where would these animals learn the speech of the elves? He preferred to not ask. He did not think he wished to know. There were far too many mysteries already swirling 'round these animals.
He watched the female Moon Beast approach. She was a sleek and graceful silver creature with gray eyes and a russet-colored mane which in the wind looked like living fire. Her wings, tucked under her front forelegs were of a transparent silver and russet tone that complimented her fur. She walked with an elegant and aristocratic gait. She was fit for royalty.
His blue eyes shone with admiration and open friendship and he held out his hand toward her. At once she approached him and gently nuzzled his hand. Her gray eyes glistened softly.
Haldir scratched her neck and asked her, "Have you a name?"
Orphanium snorted and the female Moon Beast responded. When she spoke her voice was musical and low, unlike her father's which was coarse like sand on paper. "I am called Bruinen." She spoke in Quenya.
Haldir nodded and bowed. "Well met, friend Bruinen." The Moon Beast snorted and turned to nuzzle her father.
After a few moments Haldir spoke. "It is time to depart. My men have already passsed the boundaries of this place and we move while the sun is high."
Turning one last time to Orphanium, Haldir said, "You honor me."
Orphanium nodded and urged, "Keep this place in thy heart, Haldir. Say naught of it, for it is where our females come to birth."
Haldir understood, his eyes solemn. He touched his hand to his heart in the ancient salutation of his people, "May the Blessings of the Valar be with you and your kin, Orphanium." He bowed deeply.
Orphanium fluted a shrill sound and the rest of the Moon Beasts joined him. "The blessings of the Vardhin be upon thy skin unto the end of days." replied Orphanium, lowering his head.
Bruinen came to stand next to Haldir. Her eyes regarded her people sadly, as if she would never see them again.
Concerned, Haldir said, "Nay, do not grieve so. You will come back to your people."
Bruinen turned sad gray eyes and merely said, "Thy skin is now mine." With that she turned. Hr for followed her lead and soon the valley and the waterfall were behind them. Turning to look back one last time, the Moon Beasts stood huddled, gazing toward Haldir and Bruinen.
Haldir hoped he was doing the right thing. By the Valar, he truly hoped he was.
