Chapter 20 - Terrible News

Haldir's dreams were fragmented, vit. Ht. He dreamed of Eridani, inside a vast labyrinth. He could hear her voice crying out to him but he couldn't understand her words.

He had awakened early to a terrible sense of doom and was rapidly approaching the eyries, ready to fly to her, when a Ryder intercepted him and told him of the discovery of two elven bodies. They had been spotted in the same vicinity where the group headed to Asto Nuut would have been about two days ago.

Turning back to the Palace, he rapidly covered the distance, and called for an emergency council. His Commanders listened gravely and argued against his decision, but his mind was set. He would travel at once to the Plains of Asto Nuut. Once there he would be able to determine the fate of the elves. He also announced his intention to travel without escort. But Haldir had not bargained on his Commanders' violent disapproval of this one point.

So violently did his Commanders react to the idea of allowing Haldir to travel alone, that he yielded and let them choose one lone warrior to accompany him. It was decided that they would travel by Eagle to the place where the bodies had been located, and then send them back. Of course, this plan was contigent on what they would find.

Fear for the safety of the missing group hastened his pace and Haldir was armed and ready within a quarter of an hour, packing only a small flask of water and some lembas. He was accustomed to living in the open and required little by way of body comforts.

The elf who travelled with him was personally picked by Tarmacil and Haldir was impressed. A young elf of about 2,000 years his specialty was tracking. He was known for his quick eyes and q wit wit.

Accompanied by his Commanders, they headed toward the eyries where two great Eagles and their Ryders waited.

Haldir turned to his council and gave them a last instruction. "If we do not come back, do not send anyone for us. Choose another to lead you, but spill no more blood on our behalf." He studied each elf. Their faces were dark at the thought that Haldir may not return.

Jumping onto the Eagle's leather harness, Haldir took the rear position and waited for the Ryder, who swiftly climbed up and positioned himself before Haldir, deftly guiding the Eagle away from the group. Within moments they were airborne, Haldir looked back to see the other Eagle carrying the tracker following closely behind.

They covered in one day what it would have taken horses two. By nightfall, they had found the bodies of the elves and picked up two sets of tracks. One that led to nowhere and the other that led to the group Ormuil had sent on ahead.

The second set of tracks were the most difficult to follow because it seemed as if whoever had made them also tried to destroy them at their passing. Haldir was familiar with the method and knew that most likely those responsible for this set of tracks either doubled back or used something to destroy the pattern. But elven trackers are able to read even the distortion of the earth. They followed the pattern of distortion for several leagues until Haldir signaled a halt for the moment and turned back to the waiting elves grouped at the border of the Asto Nuut.

Knowing now that the first set of tracks were most likely made by those who had taken Eridani and Ormuil as well as killed the others, he instructed both Ryders to follow the entire length of it until its end, and mark its position. He was certain that wherever the tracks ended is where they would find Eridani and Ormuil. Once the tracks's position was marked, the Ryders had instructions from Haldir to choose amongst themselves who would return to Avonea with the bodies and news of their discovery, and who would stay to watch the area.

Haldir had not expected to find Eridani. His heart told him she had been taken by the Yrch. He refused to allow his mind to think of her fate, but his heart betrayed him moment by moment. He was tormented with worry although his eyes would not betray the anguish in his soul.

With a heavy heart he realized that he was the only person who could continue with the plans to reach Asto Nuut. Now, especially in light of the situation, it was imperativet tht they learn what these creatures were. With a sigh, he closed his eyes and said a silent, fervent prayer for Eridani. Watching the elves as they shared quiet conversation, he moved off to the side and turned West.

"Whatever grace you have given me; whatever blessings you have bestowed on me," he pleaded silently, "let it pass to her. Save her. Bring her home."
