Chapter 19 - A Revelation

There was such pain, the likes of which she had not known. Her leg ached and throbbed, as did her head. She tried to move, but this was met with an instant jolt of pain. Slowly she opened her eyes.

All around her Eridani saw Yrch. She was being carried in a make shift stretcher. She tried to find Ormuil but could not. She knew the Yrch had killed the other two elves and the thought filled her with sick dread. The Orch pulling her stretcher noticed the movement on it and turned back to look, but made no acknowledgement.

Eridani realized that these creatures were fast as they moved in a run. She fought back the urge to vomit, as the stench of Orch sweat assailed her nostrils. She was worried about Ormuil, knowing from her books that Orch delighted in torturing elves. Just then she tried to sit up, but found she was bound to the stretcher. Lowering herself back, she realized she had no way to escape. She would have to wait and see where these creatures were taking her. Yet, in minutes she was asleep as exhaustion and blood loss weakened her.

Several hours later, Eridani awoke and looked around her. They were still travelling at the same quick run. But she noted that the terrain had changed. There were small mountains to her left which she thought would be the east. She was not familiar with this part of Middle Earth and wondered where they were. She was worried about Ormuil and tried to move in the stretcher. Just then a gloved hand pushed her roughly and uttered something in some sort of guttural language she did not understand. But the meaning was obvious.

unseunset of what seemed like endless days, Eridani was allowed to move from the stretcher. Her leg still throbbed but the wound was beginning to heal. Elves mended quickly, she knew, but it seemed this was knowledge lost on the Yrch, judging from the number of times they looked at the injury. Her head throbbed and after careful probbing, she had found a nice lump in the back of her head.

She still had not seen Ormuil and was worried about him, but she dared not ask and risk bringing attention to him. She had eaten little for the Yrch food was revolting to her, but the water they had offered was clear and clean and this she accepted without hesitation. Her stomach grumbled but she knew she could go for days without food, as long as she had water to drink.

Her captors were distant from her, but curious, giving her sidelong glances and never directly looking into her eyes. She remembered the strange reaction of the Orch during their battle and wondered why it had recoiled from her in that way. She tried counting the days by the number of times Earendil rose and set, but as she had been unconscious for a time, she had no true count of her captivity. However, her best estimate was that she had been with the Yrch for about six days.

It was on the evening of what Eridani counted as her seventh day in captivity that they reached the Yrch stronghold.

There was much activity in the group, with lots of shouting and arguments breaking out. She thought she detected the word, "Durzad'dum" but was uncertain as to its meaning. She reasoned it may be the name of their encapment or village. Looking about her, she wondered where she was.

The terrain about them was marshland, with tall dead grass covering almost every square inch within sight, almost to the horizon. There were no birds or animals that she could hear or see. This looked like a dead wasteland. She saw no fish in the numerous ponds they had passed. And just now, the group had come to a stop before a wide rectangular patch of wet earth. She noticed that no grass or shrubs grew there.

One of the Yrch, who seemed to be their Captain, broke away from the group and approached the clear area and stomped his foot on the ground. Once, twice, three times. And then the incredible happened.

Dust, rising from the wet ground, seeming to come from inside the earth, rose in swirls as a huge metal door opened in the ground. With a low groan, the door was pulled back by the Orch Captain and she noticed that a taut chain held the door open.

Turning to the others, the Orch Captain motioned for the group to descend. Eridani felt herself being lowered into the gaping hole and closed her eyes. From the sounds and smells that assailed her, she believed she was being taken into the very bowels of Death.

When she felt that the stretcher was no longer moving, she cracked her eyes open. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She looked around, trying to find Ormuil. Instead she saw a beehive of Orch activity. Yrch came and went, some with weapons, others with tools; some with what looked like fabric and cloth. From far away, she could hear the distinct sound of hammer against stone. She realized that a mine was nearby. All around her there were fires lit, some were being used to melt stones and others for purposes she could not fathom. Each Orch went about his or her business quietly and did not bother to look in the direction of the captives. Eridani reasoned this meant they were used to having prisoners brought there. The continued hammering against stone was beginning to thrum throughout her body.

Turning to follow the Orch Captain's movements, Eridani suddenly felt a slight probe into her mind. She shook her head and closed her eyes. What was that, she thought. Again, it came...a delicate touch, much like a caress or a soft wind. It whispered incessantly.

"Eridani, daughter of Gilthrien..."

Bewildered, Eridani looked around her. Who had said that? Suddenly she heard it again.

"Eridani.........your coming to this place was prophecied......"

The touch was cold, hateful and she tried to close her mind against it. But it pushed past her barriers.

"Do not fight my will....."

She turned her head and found an Orch studying her. Just as it reached her face, it averted its eyes. A command was given and her stretcher began moving again. Past the fires, away from the heat and further down where it was colder and darker. Eridani closed her eyes and willed her mind to call on Haldir...and as she did, it was filled with another's voice,

"Eridani........do not fight me....."

When the stretcher stopped moving, she felt her restraints being loosened. After a few moments, she heard the Yrch move away from her. Carefully, she opened her eyes.

She was in a cold, small and dark cell.kingking around her she hugged herself to keep the damp and cold away. But the voice found her.....

"Eridani.....Eridani......"

Lowering her head, she fought the fear that was beginning to rise in her soul.
