Bargain Fulfilled
Chapter two: Bargain fulfilled
Thranduil had spent quite some time trying to soothe his little elfling, who, ever since his mother’s death caused by orcs, had been haunted my nightmares, memories of that night.
He tried all he could, rocking his little leaf, singing to him, telling him stories.
Hours passed like this, hours Thranduil happily dedicated, if it would benefit Legolas.
When finally, the young elf slept, he silently slipped out of the room, back to the room he’d left Elrond in.
Approaching, he heard the evident moans coming from the Elflord and he raised an eyebrow, “That’s odd”
When he entered, he found the Elflord…preparing himself?
Stepping in, he locked the door then, a soft laugh falling from him.
Elrond stood swiftly upright as he heard the laughter, afraid to turn around and see who it was, but then, the unmistakable melodic voice of Thranduil came, “Make yourself decent Peredhel, I have no interest in your body”
Elrond spun around to him, surprise written clearly on his face, to which again, Thranduil laughed, “You think so little of me then? You know well why I agreed to your ideas, not because the prospect pleases me…”
The Rivendell lord nodded, “Thank you, for…sparing my sons”
Thranduil smiled, nodding and clasping his shoulder, “Elrond, I would but have expected the same kindness from you, had I lost…but, the stakes were high enough to make me pay attention. I’d have offered Celeborn the same option, but he refused to take it, most probably believing the same as you, that I would…hmmm use you?”
Elrond closed his eyes, “You’re too kind. It’s as though only now I see how wrong it was…What I offered…so…carelessly.” Opening them, he looked up at Thranduil, “I promised I’d always protect them…I’d nearly….”
Thranduil chuckled, “They would have been unhappy with you, but you know you had naught to fear, had I taken them to me, as was the agreement, I wouldn’t have done them harm…and you know Celeborn would do naught to harm them, either”
Elrond nodded, “I offer you my sincere apologies Thranduil, I don’t know why…or…It should never have happened”
Thranduil embraced him lightly, “There’s nothing to forgive my friend, we both know what led you to stick to this idea, or, should I say who?”
Elrond smiled, glad to be forgiven by Thranduil, “I’ll never forgive myself…” He moved to protest against Thranduil’s insinuation, if only not to blame his Father in Law, but, seeing the look in Thranduil’s eyes, he merely nodded, they both knew the truth in the Mirkwood king’s words.
Thranduil smiled, then motioned to a chair, “Please sit, I’ll have you speak with me, tell me how are your children?”
Elrond was taken aback, again, but sat down none the less, “They are quite well, considering the circumstances…The boys have taken up mischief, mostly at the expense of Erestor and Glorfindel” A smile came to the half-elf’s lips, “They aren’t happy with it, of course, but accept it as the twins’ way of dealing with their Mother’s loss… and Arwen, she’s taken after gardening, I find flowers and plants popping up in the strangest places truly”
Thranduil smiled, nodding, yet with a hint of sadness in his eyes that didn’t go unnoticed by his friend, “Tell me, what has you troubled?”
A soft sigh fell from the generally good spirited king, “I wish I could say the same for Legolas, it appears his Mother’s loss has caused him many troubles at night, the memories haunt him in his sleep. He’s a good child, I just wish I could aid him with this.”
Elrond listened quietly, then smiled, “In time dear friend, Legolas will come to understand his dreams, he’ll no more fear them, worry not, his spirit will remain unharmed by the memories, I see a good life ahead of him”
The Elflords conversed till the break of dawn, at which point Thranduil declared Elrond’s bargain fulfilled, allowing the Rivendell Lord to now return home, and indeed, their allegiance and alliance, had grown greater, closer…
If only such could be said of the relations with Lothlorien.
TBC…
