A few weeks later...

Celeborn unrolled the parchment and looked at it, puzzled. It was definitely writing on it, but it looked more of a finger-painting to him. At last, he understood that it was an invitation by the father of little Erestor to come to discuss a plan of action concerning the evil spell placed on his son. Celeborn loved the wee one with all his heart, so he packed his luggage and promptly left for the castle.

As he entered the lord's private study, he noticed that Ereinion Gil-Galad and Thranduil were there. Gil-Galad was holding little Erestor who had grown since the last time he had saw him, noted Celeborn. The elfling was laughing merrily at the funny faces the Noldo king was making for him. Thranduil, on the other hand, was admiring a sword that was hung on the wall.

-That is one mighty weapon you have there, he told the lord. I could think of many uses for it in my kingdom.

-It is an heirloom to my family; but I would gladly give it up if it could lift that awful curse of my son.

Celeborn had reached his seat and took Erestor in his arms before sitting down. The little one looked at him for an instant then smiled his best toothless smile for the Sinda lord. Celeborn saw the midnight eyes sparkling with joy and smiled back at the baby. Erestor quickly caught one silver tress and proceeded to chew on it. Celeborn laughed.

-He really is the most adorable elfling in Arda, he told his father.

-Yes, his mother also thinks so.

-I was very intrigued by your message; at first, I thought it was a child's scribbling.

-Well, I am to blame for that. I became so scared for my son that I ordered the burning of all quills in the castle. It left us with nothing but our fingers to write with.

-That explains it then.

Gil-Galad smiled before saying:

-I am quite sure that you have now noted the futility of such an act.

-Yes, of course. So what am I to do? I cannot just sit and wait.

Thranduil stopped admiring the weapons just long enough to say:

-You obviously cannot keep the quills from your son; try to keep your son from the quills.

-How? asked the exasperated lord.

-Send him away until the doomed begetting day is passed him.

Celeborn and Gil-Galad stared at Thranduil, incredulous, then at themselves, and then at the lord, who looked to be in a state of shock. Celeborn's thoughts ran through his mind at full speed.

-Thranduil has a point; he whispered. If you were to send little Erestor away under the care of someone you trust, it would be easier to control what comes near him.

-Yes! continued Gil-Galad; I have a cottage deep in the forest. Apart from me and another elf, no one knows it is there.

Thranduil came closer. He could not resist teasing the Noldo king a bit.

-Another elf, Ernie? He murmured near his friend's ear. Could this elf be Elrond, by any chance? I hear that you too are quite...close.

Celeborn jumped in before Gil-Galad could retort.

-That is a wonderful idea! Send the little one there, where no one can interfere with his growing up and when the time is right, bring him back.

-But who will go with him? asked the lord.

Celeborn looked at his two friends, who were eyeing each other in a menacing way.

-Us three, the Sinda lord answered.

Thranduil and Ereinion abandoned all pugnacious thoughts.

-Us! shouted Thranduil. But who will rule our realms in our place?

-My wife Galadriel in perfectly capable of taking over my duties in my absence.

Thranduil rolled his eyes; he never liked Celeborn's wife.

-Elrond can rule my kingdom; I trust him in everything.

There was more eye rolling from Thranduil.

-Are you telling us that there is no one capable of replacing you at the head of your kingdom, Thranduil? continued Gil-Galad. After all, it seems that all you do all day is chase spiders.

-Gigantic and poisonous spiders! It is a very dangerous occupation! And yes, my generals can replace me while I am gone. It's just that...

Celeborn chose this moment to place little Erestor in Thranduil's arms. The sylvan king immediately fell under his charm.

-I suppose I can give up everything for 500 years to raise you and keep you from harm, little one. There is much I can teach you; for example...

Thranduil brought baby Erestor to a nearby desk.

-This is a mug. And this is a cup. The cup is smaller than the mug and is used to serve wine. You serve beer in the mug. However, I do not see why one could not drink wine from a mug if one chooses to.

The lord looked flabbergasted. He understood that this was the right solution for the safety of Erestor but somehow, he was still worried. Celeborn saw this and tried to reassure the poor father.

-Do not worry, my friend; everything will be fine. We will raise Erestor as if he was our own.

-And we will watch over him with great vigilance; added Gil-Galad.

-I know. I just wonder what his mother will think of all this.

-She loves her son, said Celeborn; she will see that it is the right thing to do.

And so it was done. After few weeks of preparations, the three godfathers and their little godson left for Gil-Galad's secret cottage. Although the place was remote, it was very well equipped and the four of them would be perfectly comfortable for the next 500 years. There were no concerns for food since the three elves were great hunters and the forest had plenty of resources available. What the forest could not give them would be brought to a secluded location where the three leader would be able to pick it up. That way, their true location would remain a secret.

Ereinion guided them to the place. He was quite proud of this secret get-away and he was curious of what his friends thought about it.

-So, is it not a perfect hiding place?

-Well, it is on the ground, answered Celeborn.

-And it is made of wood which is not very sturdy, completed Thranduil.

Gil-Galad rolled his eyes.

-My dear whining companions, it is not all our people who live up a tree or in caves. Most of us do live in normal houses.

Celeborn just shook his head and said nothing. The truth is that he was quite fond of living in a tree. Thranduil unsheathed a hunting knife and said:

-Let me make sure that it is safe inside.

Gil-Galad, who was holding little Erestor, said to him:

-I believe that your sylvan godfather is a bit paranoid.

Suddenly, there were strange sounds coming from the cottage.

-What is he doing? Asked Ereinion.

-He is moving things around.

-Why?

-I believe he is looking for spiders.

Gil-Galad sighed.

-Paranoid, he whispered in Erestor's ear.

Eventually, they all settled in inside, making this cottage their home for the next 500 years.
