Chapter 19/?
***...*** denotes flashbacks
Grinning he rounded another corner, his movements becoming more and more jerky as his destination drew closer. He could hardly believe it but luck finally seemed to be with him. Today Orlando would finally be his. It took him a lot of self-control not to start whistling. The sun-light that flooded the corridors seemed brighter than he had ever imagined possible, a brilliant play of glittering beauty that was leading him. It almost seemed as though God or some other almighty entity knew and approved of his plans. He smiled broadly as he walked past a nurse he didn’t know.
//She must be new.// he thought happily, slowing down his steps as he reached his goal. Quickly he assessed the situation. Safe for the nurse, who was walking away, the corridor was absolutely deserted.
Satisfied he read the name on the sign next to the door in front of which he had stopped. Orlando Bloom. He had been more than surprised that security had allowed him to take his backpack into the hospital without even checking it through. All the better for him. He listened at the door but the only thing he heard was the soft rustling of newspaper pages being turned. //He’s awake.// he thought with some disappointment. //At least he’s reading. Otherwise his full attention would be on the door... this leaves me at least a small advantage if I surprise him...//
He frowned and stared at the door in wonder. It had almost sounded as though someone was standing on the other side of it. He listened carefully but all he could hear was the thunderous beating of his own heart. Sighing he turned his attention back to the newspaper once more. Hours had flown past since Dr Stein had left him and there still hadn’t been any news about Viggo. He was getting worried. //He can’t sleep that long, can he?// he thought once again, not really concentrating on the newspaper. Finally he found an article that seemed at least remotely interesting.
“There you are...” he started as he heard the door open, expecting to see Dr Stein but the words stuck in his throat as he saw who walked in.
***He stared in wonder as he was suddenly pulled up. Still groggy from sleep. A scream froze in his throat as he noticed the burning green eyes in a black ski mask staring down at him.***
A pained cry of fear twisted itself into a strangled moan as it broke from his throat. Orlando sat paralyzed with fear, unable to move as the cause of his nightmares advanced upon him. The victorious expression in the mad green eyes seemed to pierce right through the few, unstable barriers he had managed to put between himself and the memories of what had happened, breaking them down and leaving his vulnerability exposed. A faint “no...” escaped from his lips in a hushed whisper as he finally managed to move and crawled backwards, till he felt the solid wall behind him.
“No...” he whispered again, his whole body shivering as if it was in the clutches of a high fever. He shook his head in denial, closing his eyes and hoping that everything would be back to normal when he opened them again. The man however was still there as he dared to open them again and was still coming closer.
He screamed in horror as the door suddenly opened again.
“Freeze!” a dark voice boomed through the room. Utterly shocked Orlando stared at the two guns pointed at the man in the black ski mask and the three shadowy figures behind them.
He gulped as he was grabbed and held tightly by the intruder but went limp as soon as he felt the cool steel of a knife against his throat.
“Move aside, or he dies!” the intruder screamed at Dr Stein, Goodie and MacLachlan. “Put your weapons down, or I swear I will kill him!” Hesitantly Goodie and MacLachlan threw their guns to the floor, MacLachlan’s eyes blazing with fury as the intruder kicked them under the bed. “Step aside!” the man demanded. “Into the corner of the room!”
Quietly seething with anger Dr Stein and the two officers obeyed, clearing the way between the intruder and the door.
“Give it up.” Goodie beseeched the man. “You won’t get out with Orlando as hostage.”
“If I don’t get out, Orlando will go into death with me!” the man said with a quiet finality no one dared to contradict.
Orlando barely registered the endless seconds in which he was dragged outside, they all blurred into an eternity of fear.
Dumbstruck he watched the man kick the door shut and place a chair under the handle, thus locking the two police officers and Dr Stein inside, never letting go off his prisoner.
Orlando screamed in surprised pain, as the man suddenly pushed him to the ground.
“You’ll only get away this time...” he said, pointing the knife at Orlando “The next time I will take you with me!”
With that he turned around and ran, leaving a petrified Orlando behind and pulling off his ski mask as he turned round the corner.
For a few minutes he sat on the floor and stared after the man. Surprised he turned to the door as he registered that voices were calling his name. //Oh yes...// he thought //Dr Stein and the police... they’re locked in there...// helplessly he stared at the chair that blocked the door while the voices increased in volume, screaming his name and demanding to know whether he was okay. With strangely stiff, automatic movements he scrambled to his feet and stared at the door again, till he finally noticed that he could pull the chair aside.
“Arngh!” They all groaned as the door suddenly opened and they landed in a heap on the floor. As soon as they could they scrambled off each other, staring at Orlando.
“Orlando?” Dr Stein asked worriedly. “Are you alright?” The young actor just shook his head, still too shocked by the recent events to know what to say.
“Okay,” the doctor sighed “MacLachlan, Goodie, please take him back into his room, I have to make sure that a shock is all he suffered.” With a decisive nod MacLachlan scooped the shivering Orlando into his arms and carried him to the bed, gently depositing him there. Goodie watched with furrowed eyebrows, thoughts racing within his head.
He was in another room as he woke again. Dazed he sat up and stared at the sleeping figure in the bed next to his. //Viggo...//
“I thought it might be better if you were put into another room.” Dr Stein said from the other side of his bed. “We have no idea how the intruder managed to find out which room you’re in. The sooner we get you and Mr Mortensen out of here and under the protection of professional bodyguards, the better.”
“But,” Orlando asked in confusion “why am I in Viggo’s room?”
“Viggo is being closely watched at all times, in case his condition worsens. It less trouble to watch the two of you at the same time and in the same room. If he wakes again, we’ll be able to discharge him tomorrow. You can live with each other again then.”
Orlando nodded and cuddled the covers close. For the first time feeling safe, warm and secure with Dr Stein and Viggo by his side.
