Chapter 18 - In the Hands of the Yrch

Several hours later, Eridani was slowly limping her way back home. Fury, indignation and shame clouded her mind. Ormuil had finally put his foot down, had been implacable and would not listen to any of her arguments. She knew that her injury slowed hern, an, and she realized that he had made the only logical decision and that was to send her back. For her good and the good of the others. And yet, her spirit screamed that this was the wrong thing to do, that she must be allowed to go on.

It all started when she had stumbled. Prior to her accident, they were covering at least 10 leagues per day and at speed. This meant that they all had to sprint, something they could not do now. Eventually, Ormuil had made up his mind and calculated for her that at their present rate of travel, it would take them nearly twice the number of days to reach the Asto Nuut. And that, he had told her, was entirely out of the question for Haldir expected some news within fifteen days of their departure from Avonea.

And so, it was decided that the group would divide into two parties. One would continue ahead until they reached the borders of the Asto Nuut and there camp and wait for instructions, while the other returned the Lady Eridani to Avonea.

It was near noon and they had been walking for about four hours. Because of her importance to Haldir, Ormuil personally decided to escort her back. He had selected two other elves, one a tracker and the other an archer, to accompany them back to Avonea. Just now Eridani cast a glance at the landscape before them.

Never changing, an endless dust plain where only small shrubs or tall grass grew. This was a land that seemed to hold ancient secrets. And ancient riddles, she mused, thinking to the creatures of Asto Nuut.

Just then Ormuil gripped her arm and forced her to stop. His eyes were surveying the area, sweeping from right to left and then back, left to right. The tracker sprinted ahead and the archer unslung his bow and readied an arrow. Eridani looked and saw nothing, except a small dark patch ahead of them. Dead grass she shrugged. But Ormuil was not convinced and swifly drew his sword. Eridani'es wes widened in surprise but she followed suit.

As the four elves stood still , facing a flat, dusty horizon, the dark patch of dead grass suddenly leapt and took form.

Ormuil was the first to react and breathed, "Yrch!" Taking his orders from Haldir to heart, he positioned himself in front of the Lady. The tracker suddsuddenly thrown back and instantly run through. The archer shot arrow after arrow, but was eventually overcome by the sheer number of creatures. Both elves soon lay dead.

Eridani's quick eyes took in what Ormuil already knew: they were outnumbered. And although it was said that for each elf warrior, five Orch would die, she knew that the Yrch far outnumbered them. She knew they had only one of two possible fates: death or capture. Knowing what Yrch did to their prisoners, she faced them grimly and decided death would be the most merciful path.

As she began to fight, her mind travelled to Haldir. Would she ever see him again? Hold him in her arms again? Would he ever know the depth of her love for him? The sudden screech of an Orch at her side brought her back to reality. She had cut down at least half a dozen Yrch and had not even registered doing so. She could hear Ormuil fighting behind her.

The Orch at her side approached her steadily, and she noticed he kept his eyes ted ted from her own. His squat but powerfully built body moved with a slow lumbering gait, his skin leathery gray. The Orch carried a long sword and he looked as if he knew how to wield it.

Eridani waited for the attack, concealing her small knives under her wrists. She'd wait until the creature was within striking distance, but she'd need to watch that sword.

Suddenly the Orch lunged at her, waving the sword over its head and bringing it down. Eridani jumped to one side and twirled to face the creature. The pain in her calf was intense but she knew she could not let it deter her. Again, the Orch lunged and this time holding the sword high over his head, gripping the handle with both hands. Screeching, he brought it down toward Eridani's head, but she ducked, moving inside toward the creature's chest. Quickly drawing out the small knives that were concealed under her sleeves, she made three fast strikes, noting the blades makiheirheir mark as dark blood oozed from the creature.

Shrieking, it drew back and looked down at its chest. It was then it raised its eyes to Eridani's and instantly fell back, writhing on the ground.

Eridani watched this behavior in stunned silence, but did not notice the other three Orch quickly approaching her. Only Ormuil's shout saved her from death, as she turned and sliced one Orch before being pinned down by the other two. Fighttheitheir hold, she struggled to free herself from the Yrch hands which were covered by heavy leather gloves.

Then something hit her on the head and all was dark.
