Chapter 16
Erestor stretched as he blinked the sleep from his eyes. Sitting up, he tensed as he looked around the unfamiliar room until he remembered where he was. Hearing noises coming from the other chamber, he climbed out of bed and slipped his dressing robe on that he found lying at the foot of the bed. Erestor shivered as he walked out of the bed chamber and found Glorfindel in the kitchen cooking. “Good morning, Fin,” Erestor said as he looked towards the sitting area, expecting to see Baraon, only to find his bedding all folded up neatly on the sofa.
Glorfindel looked up from the batter he was mixing and smiled, “Good morning, Es, how are you feeling?”
“I am feeling well,” the Advisor replied as he came to stand next to Glorfindel. “Need any help?”
Glorfindel nodded as he added a few more dried blueberries to the pancake batter, “You could check the kettle on the stove to see if it is hot for the tea. After breakfast, I need to go out and start to build up the woodpile.”
As Erestor prepared the tea, he asked, “Where is Baraon?”
“He has already left. I know that you wanted to say farewell but you were so tired that I did not wish to wake you,” Glorfindel said, seeing the disappointment in Erestor’s eyes.
Erestor sighed, knowing that Glorfindel was correct, he needed his rest. By the time he had the tea finished and the table set, Glorfindel finish cooking the pancakes. As they sat and ate breakfast, they talked about what needed to be done before the first snow arrived, which would be within days. When they finished eating and cleaned up the kitchen, they dressed and wandered outside. Erestor walked over to the stream, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, the sound of the gentle flowing water and the birds that flitted in among the trees. Soon Glorfindel joined him and he said, “I think I will work on the garden while you chop wood. I am sure that there are some things I can find in amongst all that chaos. I know that I spied some elderberries and even a few wild blackberries along the rock wall.”
Glorfindel nodded, “That sounds like a good plan. But do not over work yourself, meldir (m. friend), I mean it.”
Erestor smiled up at the Slayer and chuckled, “You know, you would make a good Adar, what with all your coddling.”
Glorfindel crossed his arms over his chest and stared at Erestor until finally the Advisor gave in and said he would behave himself and not over do it. After taking stock of all the brambles and the over grown walkways in the garden, Erestor thought it best to take off his robe, lest he snag it on something. Folding his robe and placing it on the porch, he then went into the stable where he saw some tools hanging on the wall the evening before. When he came out of the stable he found Glorfindel waiting for him, bearing one of his tunics. Erestor arched his brow at the Elda as he threw the tunic over his shoulder and took the tools from his hands. “What are you doing, Fin?”
Glorfindel set the hand shovel and spade onto the ground then took his tunic and pulled it over Erestor’s head. “It is chilly out here, and the tunic you are wearing is too thin. This tunic of mine is made of wool and is larger than yours. It will keep you warmer than any that you own and it will help you from getting scraped from the brambles and such,” he said as he helped Erestor into the tunic.
Erestor was warmed, not only by Glorfindel’s tunic, but his thoughtfulness too. On impulse, he leaned up and pressed a kiss to Fin’s cheek. “Hannon le (Thank you),” he whispered.
Glorfindel smiled as he tucked a dark lock behind Erestor’s ear, he had to stay himself from claiming his meldir’s ruby lips. “You are very welcome. Now, if I do not get to work, I will not get anything done,” and with that, Glorfindel started to chop and pile the firewood that they would need for the winter.
Erestor watched Glorfindel walk away. He brought the collar of the tunic to his nose and took a deep breath, taking in Fin’s scent. How he loved the way he smelled, earthy with a spicy twist to it. Shaking himself, the Advisor gathered his tools and started to clear the walkway that led into the garden. By noon Erestor had the brambles and the weeds cleared from the walkways that meandered throughout the garden, even uncovering a stone bench that sat back in the corner nearest to the cabin. Erestor looked at his work from where he knelt near the garden’s entrance. There was still a lot of work to do, a good many days worth, but he was quite pleased with his progress thus far. He found that he enjoyed gardening, feeling the soil between his fingers, connecting with the plants.
His stomach suddenly rumbled and he rubbed his belly, just now realizing how hungry he was. Deciding that he would make up a simple lunch for the two of them, he stood and brushed the dirt off his hands and clothing, thinking he had better clean up before he did anything else. Erestor turned, intent on telling Glorfindel that he was going into the cabin to fix them something to eat, but he suddenly found it hard to breathe. Sometime during the morning, Glorfindel had shed his tunic and sweat glistened upon his bare chest. Erestor’s heart felt as it was going to beat right out of his chest and he became lightheaded as all his blood seemed to rush to his groin. As Glorfindel stopped and wiped his brow with his arm, Erestor licked his lips as his eyes followed a drop of sweat as it made its way down the Elda’s stomach and disappeared into the waistband of his leggings. Erestor did not know how long he stood there before he realized that Fin was not moving. Snapping his head up, he found dark intense eyes watching him. Embarrassed at being caught staring, Erestor stammered, “I…um…I am going to fix lunch,” then quickly ran into the cabin.
Glorfindel stood there and stared at the closed door to the cabin for a few moments before heading straight to the stream and proceeded to douse himself with its cool water. He tried desperately to regain his breath and control over his body. When he had noticed Erestor staring at him, he had been shocked; convinced that he was seeing things. But as Erestor’s gaze continued to study his body, he saw the desire in those dark-brown eyes, and neither did he miss the bulge that was evident in his meldir’s leggings. Glorfindel shook his head, water spraying everywhere from his wet hair. ‘It is going to be a very long winter,’ he thought.
The rest of the day was spent with Glorfindel continuing to stockpile wood and Erestor working in the cabin, trying to avoid Glorfindel if at all possible. The Advisor did not know why he felt so embarrassed, maybe it was the fact that it had been so long since he felt stirrings of these kinds. There was also the fact that he knew, no matter how he may be attracted to Glorfindel, and in fact, loved him, he was in no way ready for a physical relationship. A part of Erestor feared that he would never be ready and that fear fed the fear that Glorfindel would seek out physical comfort from another. An Elf’s life was long indeed, too long to go without the touch of another, and Erestor would not expect the Elda to live celibate the rest of his life because of him. Erestor was determined to pull himself together, so he worked diligently in the kitchen, cleaning and storing the various herbs and berries he had found in the garden that morning. By the time Anór was sinking into the hills, he had calmed himself and prepared a hearty stew. Erestor was just finishing setting the table when Glorfindel walked into the cabin from the stable.
Glorfindel did not know what mood Erestor was going to be in when he walked into the cabin, but when the Advisor gave him a small smile and said that dinner was ready, he was relieved. He did not want things between them to become awkward. Deciding that he would act as if nothing had happened earlier that day, he said, “Hannon le, Erestor, for making supper. It smells delicious. I need to clean up before I eat though.”
Erestor nodded, “Of course. I filled the tank and the water should be hot by now. Why do you not take a bath? I will keep the stew on the stove to keep warm.”
“Hannon le, I think I will. I will not be long,” Glorfindel said, heading into the bathing chamber.
After they finished dinner and cleaned and put away the dishes, they sat in front of the fireplace and enjoyed a leisurely game of chess. It was not long before Glorfindel spied Erestor trying to hide yawns behind his hand and he yawned and stretched, “Meldir, I find that I am quite tired. If you do not mind, I would like to retire for the night.”
Erestor knew very well that he had been caught trying to hide how tired he was, but played along. “Very well, I know how hard you worked today. But might I say, Fin, you are getting soft in your old age,” he chuckled, leaping up as Glorfindel tried to catch him.
“Why you!” Glorfindel exclaimed as he stood and chased Erestor into the bedchamber, cornering him. “Aha, you have nowhere to go now!”
“Now, Fin, can you not take a joke?” Erestor yelped as the Elda started tickling him.
“Humph, yes, but it is so much fun tickling you!” Glorfindel laughed. A few moments later, Glorfindel frowned as a tear made its way down Erestor’s cheek. “Es, I am sorry. I…” he started to say.
Erestor grabbed hold of Glorfindel’s arm, staying anything else that he would have said. He could not believe that he actually felt happy. Not a complete, fulsome joy, but happy nonetheless. He looked into Glorfindel’s eyes as he said, “Hannon le, Fin, I have not laughed like this in a very long time.”
Glorfindel smiled with relief as he wiped the tear away and replied, “You are welcome mellon nín (my friend), and such a wonderful laugh it is.”
Erestor smiled and shook his head at Glorfindel then gathered his night clothes and padded into the bathing chamber to get changed. When he came back into the bedroom he found Glorfindel already in bed. Crawling under the covers, he snuggled into Glorfindel’s embrace as he wrapped his arms around him, pulling him back against his chest. It did not take long for Erestor to fall asleep and when Glorfindel felt his meldir relax as reverie claimed him, he tightened his hold on him and soon followed.
