Chapter 15

They were a few hours into their journey when Glorfindel, Erestor, and Baraon came to a point in the trail where it had become very overgrown, causing them to travel in single file. After another hour of slow going, the trail widened a bit, giving them more room to maneuver. When Baraon called out to Glorfindel, the Slayer pulled up along side of him, leaning over to listen as he said, “I think it would be a good time to stop soon for a rest.”

Glorfindel nodded his agreement, “Yes, I do not want to push Erestor too hard.”

Suddenly both of them stiffened as they felt uneasy, as if they were being watched. Baraon looked to the trees and bushes that ran along the path, trying to discern where it was coming from, but Glorfindel already knew. Looking back at Erestor he noted the Advisor’s hands fisting around his horse’s reins, his eyes narrowed upon Baraon.

Erestor was getting tired as time went by. He was quite upset about leaving Lindir, even though he knew it was for the best, but it was making his emotions even rawer. Erestor was determined, though, to keep up with the other two, not wanting to cause Glorfindel more worry. The Advisor became quite nervous when they had to travel single file, he could not stop the feeling of being trapped creep over him. He was nearly to a panic by the time the path had widened once more. When Glorfindel had ridden up along side Baraon and leaned it to speak with him, it was all that Erestor could take. The feelings of possessiveness and anger at Baraon’s proximity to Glorfindel came crashing over him, so much so that his horse snorted and stamped his feet as he felt his Master’s unease.

“Baraon, I would like you to ride ahead and find a decent place for us to take a break,” Glorfindel said quietly, never looking away from Erestor.

The sound in his Captain’s voice made Baraon turn back and he followed his gaze to where Erestor sat, giving him murderous glares. Taken aback at the vehemence in the Advisor’s countenance, he whispered, “What is wrong? What did I do?”

Glorfindel just whispered, “Nothing, just go,” then he slowly moved away from the warrior.

Suddenly Baraon realized what was wrong and he pulled on the reins of his horse and the pack horses, and slowly made his way farther down the trail. Glorfindel stopped his horse a few feet from Erestor and slid off, coming to stand at his side. Placing his hand upon Erestor’s knee, Glorfindel said, “Es…Es…Erestor!”

Erestor finally looked down at Glorfindel and that was when his anger quickly turned to shame and he numbly fell into his meldir’s arms. Burying his face in Glorfindel’s chest, he whispered, “I am so sorry. Baraon…I hope he will not be angry with me.”

Glorfindel sighed, “No, Es, he will not be. I am sorry. I should have had us stop for a rest before this, asked if you were well. You were struggling before we left, but now, with missing Lindir, I should have been more attentive.”

Erestor shook his head and looked up into Glorfindel’s eyes, “Fin, you have helped me so much already. You have nothing to be sorry for.”

Glorfindel smiled as he caressed Erestor’s cheek with his thumb, “All the same, I think after we rest a bit, you should ride with me the rest of the way. You are tired and you are more at ease when I am close to you.”

After helping Erestor back up onto his horse, they soon found Baraon in an open glade with a small stream running through it. Erestor sighed as he dismounted and walked over to Baraon and said, “Baraon, I must apologize for my behavior. You did nothing to garner my displeasure and I need to ask for your forgiveness.”

Baraon started to say that there was nothing to forgive but saw Glorfindel shake his head so he nodded, “Of course I forgive you, Master Erestor. No hard feelings, I understand.”

Erestor sighed with relief, “Hannon le (Thank you),” and smiled briefly at the warrior before going over to sit on a downed log, taking the skin of wine that Glorfindel offered him. Taking a drink, he handed it back to his meldir and said, “Hannon le.”

After a short rest they were once more on their way, Erestor sitting before Glorfindel atop of Asfaloth. As time passed, Glorfindel started to regret his decision to have Erestor sit in front of him and not behind. Thankfully the Advisor had fallen asleep shortly after they started traveling, for Glorfindel was becoming painfully aroused. Quite sure that it would upset Erestor if he knew of how much he affected him, he tried to shift subtly in hopes of not awaking his meldir, but he was not so lucky.

Erestor jerked awake and started to asked, “Fin, is there something…” but stopped when he felt something hard pressing into his backside. Realizing what it was, he sat up straight and to his chagrin, became aroused himself.

Glorfindel sighed when he felt Erestor tense and he whispered, “I am sorry, Es. Do not be frightened, you are safe with me. I just cannot seem to control my body’s reaction to yours.”

Erestor found that he was not frightened in the least and quickly reassured the Slayer, “Fin, do not worry, you do not scare me. Maybe this riding with you was not such a good idea. I can only imagine how uncomfortable you are. I should not have been so selfish, you have been doing nothing but taking care of me these past few days.”

Glorfindel released the breath that he had been holding, unknowingly, and pulled Erestor back against him. “You are not selfish, mellon nín. If this does not bother you, then stay here. Let me hold you at least. I feel at peace with you in my arms.”

Erestor instantly relaxed in Glorfindel’s arms and he blinked back tears as he whispered, “I feel the same, in more ways than one.”

Glorfindel’s heart swelled at Erestor’s confession but he did not say anything, just tightened his arms around the Advisor, as they continued their journey in silence. For the rest of the trip, Erestor drifted in and out of reverie. When they came into the clearing where the cabin sat, Glorfindel gently shook Erestor, “Es, it is time to wake. We are here.”

Erestor yawned as he blinked the sleep from his eyes and he looked at the landscape about him. “It is truly beautiful.” The cabin was nestled next to a slowly flowing stream. It had what looked to be at one time a beautiful flower garden, which now was a mass of rambling blooms, all vying for supremacy. Patches of wild berries lined the low rock wall that enclosed the garden, a few berries still clinging tenaciously to its vines.

Glorfindel nodded his agreement, “Yes it is,” as he carefully dismounted and then helped his meldir to follow suit. Soon, the three of them were looking around noticing that though the cabin itself seemed intact, the adjacent stable’s roof needed repairing.

Baraon carefully opened the stable doors and peered inside, clearly seeing patches of sky through the roof. “I do not believe that the whole roof needs replaced, just a few shingles here and there. Though we should look over the cabin’s roof, just to be safe, what with winter coming,” the warrior said as he tested the solidity of the stable’s walls.

“Yes, that would be a wise decision,” Glorfindel said then turned to Erestor, “Why do you not sit down upon the porch while we work on the stable?”

Erestor walked over to his horse and started to gather a few of the saddle bags and said, “I do not just want to sit around while you two work. I will start to take some things into the cabin and look around, to see if there is anything that needs to be repaired inside.”

Glorfindel knew that Erestor was right, that he would feel better helping out, but he could not help from saying, “Very well, but saes (please) do not over do it. If you get tired, stop and take a rest.”

Erestor placed his hand onto Glorfindel’s forearm and gently squeezed, “Do not worry. I will not push myself too hard.” The Slayer nodded and Erestor watched him join Baraon. The Advisor caught himself staring at his meldir’s finely toned buttocks and he blushed, feeling his body come alive again. Quickly gathering another satchel, Erestor hurried into the cabin. Finally, when his eyes adjusted to the dim light within the cabin, Erestor stepped forward and placed the satchels upon a table then went and opened the drapes of all the windows, letting in Anór’s light. The cabin was small but cozy and its furnishings comfortable. To the right of the front door was the kitchen area, complete with a water pump and a huge iron stove with an attached tank to place water to heat. To the left of the front door was a sitting area with a settee, two winged back chairs, built-in bookshelves and a fireplace. Erestor noticed a door in the kitchen area and found that it led into the stables. He poked his head out and saw Glorfindel bending down, sifting through a wood pile. “How is it coming, Fin?” he asked.

Glorfindel looked over his shoulder and said, “It should not take us too long to fix the roof. How are things inside the cabin?”

“I have yet to find anything in disrepair but I am still looking things over. I will let you get back to work,” he said and he went back into the cabin, closing the door.

He found a privy behind the kitchen and was quite pleased to find that it boasted a decent size tub inside. Next he located a small walk-in pantry and quickly looked over the items inside, finding that with what they brought with them, they would be in no short supply of food for the winter. The last door that he located was to the bedchamber. It had a fireplace which shared its chimney with the one out in the main room, a wardrobe, a small vanity and a bed with matching side tables.

By the time Glorfindel and Baraon finished the repairs and inspection of the outside of the cabin and stable, it was nearing dusk. Erestor had been busy unpacking and cleaning, finding dust on every possible surface. When Glorfindel walked into the cabin he found his meldir nearly swaying on his feet in the kitchen, preparing a light repast for the three of them. Gently maneuvering Erestor to a chair at the table, he said, “I think you need a rest. Let me finish with the food.”

Erestor sighed but nodded, knowing that it would be fruitless to argue with the Slayer. Just when Glorfindel was setting the food upon the table, Baraon came in. “The horses are groomed and settled in for the night. I placed the rest of the bags inside the stable.”

“That was good of you, Baraon. Come and sit. I am sure that you are quite hungry,” Erestor said, pointing to the chair across from him.

Baraon nodded and said thank you as he sat down at the table. Glorfindel smiled as he sat close to Erestor and filled their plates with food. They made small talk while they ate but by the time they were finished, Erestor was nearly nodding off, all the emotions and the travel catching up with him. Standing up, Baraon started to gather up the dishes, “I will clean this up. You two can retire for the evening. We all have had a long day.”

Erestor was going to start to argue and help with the clearing of the table but found himself being led to the bedchamber. “Hannon le, Baraon,” Glorfindel said as he grabbed Erestor’s hand and walked them into the bedchamber.

“Glorfindel, we should not leave all that mess for Baraon to clean up,” Erestor insisted.

Glorfindel sifted through the bags and drew out a night robe for Erestor. Handing it to him, he said, “He is fine, Es, do not worry about him. Now, you need your rest. We came here for you to get better. You cannot do that if you exhaust yourself.”

Erestor knew what Glorfindel was saying, but it still was hard for him to accept all this help. He was always independent, taking care of himself, except for the times when the memories overcame him, and those times were not his choice. Draping his robe over his arm and starting toward the bathing chamber, he said, “Fine, but while I am changing clothes, will you take a blanket and pillow to Baraon? You will find some extra ones in the wardrobe.”

After Glorfindel helped Baraon finish cleaning up and giving him his bedding, Glorfindel took a quick sponge bath and then padded into the bedchamber to find Erestor already asleep. Putting another log on the fire, he extinguished all the candles and walked over to the bed, frowning when he noticed Erestor fidgeting in his sleep. Glorfindel leaned down and kissed the side of Erestor’s head before crawling into bed, pulling him into his arms. Immediately, Erestor calmed and snuggled into his embrace, bringing a smile to Glorfindel’s lips; this is how it was supposed to be, them in each other’s arms.
