Chapter Fourteen

Part Fourteen:

Gondithen had never felt so out of place in his life. Even with his brother by his side he still felt like a child sitting at the adult’s table. Elladan had met them at the entrance of the dinning room and led them to the main table, now he was sitting between Elladan and his brother. On the other side of Nórdithen was a dwarf but the name of Gloin. ~At least I don’t have to sit by the dwarf. Nórdithen is going to kill me for this~ He made eye contact with his twin and he could almost feel the daggers he was shooting at him.

Galdor had also been seated at the main table in between Arwen and Glorfindel. He seemed distant every time the twins had seen him during the day and did not make conversation with those around him even now. Gondithen wondered what had transpired between Galdor and Erestor the night before, but did not want to press his friend for information.

The feast commenced after a welcome from Elrond and news that the hobbit Frodo and his companions had arrived the night before along with Aragorn and escorted by Glorfindel. He was injured, but Elrond expected him to make a full recovery.

After Elrond was seated, servants began to bring out trays laden with all kinds of breads, meats, and cheeses. Elrond looked at all the faces at the main table “Where is Erestor?” he asked.

“I don’t think he will be joining us tonight.” Glorfindel answered.

“Hum” Elrond huffed “I will have to have a talk with him later; he really should attend dinner when we have so many honorable guests.”

“I think maybe you should let him be for now, he is under a lot of stress at the moment.”

“What about Melpomaen? I see he is not here also, no matter.” Elrond said when he realized the whole table was listening to their conversation. “Gondithen, Nórdithen, how have you enjoyed your visit so far?”

Gondithen almost dropped his fork when he was addressed by Lord Elrond.

“It is very lovely here, my lord, and we are learning a great deal from your warriors, and especially Elladan.” Elladan caught his eye and smiled fondly.

Just then the great door at the front of the hall opened with a bang.

“Sorry, sorry,” Melpomaen said as he rushed to the main table. “Sorry I am late, I had some things I need to get ready for the council and I lost track of time.” Mel took the chair opposite Nórdithen. It was like a whirlwind had entered the room as he sat down and almost knocked off the wine glass in front off him as he gestured wildly. “Erestor has been in his office with the door shut all day and I have not been able to find Saelbeth at all, and I need some research done…”

“It’s alright, Mel,” Elrond said “We’ve just started.”

Melpomaen looked across the table and smiled at Nórdithen “Well hello there, Nórdithen, right?”

“Yes, you are correct. Have you figured out how to tell us apart so soon?”

“No, I just figured it was your brother that was sitting so close to Lord Elladan.” Mel answered cheekily.

Nórdithen laughed “Now you know what I was talking about earlier.”

As the meal progressed Nórdithen and Melpomaen got to know each other. Nórdithen almost felt sorry for the dwarf seated beside him because he had no one to talk to. Nórdithen learned that Melpomaen had grown up as a fosterling of Elrond when his parents sailed. Their party had been attacked by orcs on the way to Imladris from Mirkwood. His story hit close to Nórdithen’s heart because of what had happened to his own parents. By the time dessert was served, Nórdithen was completely smitten by Melpomaen and could not wait to learn even more about the mischievous scribe.
