Chapter 14.

Chapter 14.

Thranduil had been right in assuming that he would enjoy riding with Elrond’s sons. The twins made joyous company and their bantering lifted his heartsick state. Soon, Thranduil found himself laughing at their jokes heartily.

They spent whole day riding around and just enjoying life and each other’s company. When the sun was low in the sky, Thranduil was reluctant to go back to the Last Homely House. He had hoped his little escape from his duties and worries could continue a little longer. To Thranduil’s relief, the twins told him that there was a cottage near and suggested spending the night there.

The king eagerly agreed, although he wandered why they were so willing to spend their time with him. When they finally settled down to rest, Thranduil found out their intention. The twins had settled themselves on both sides of the king and slowly leaned closer.

“Elladan? Elrohir? What do you want from me?” He asked, even if their wish had become very clear to him.

“You are very beautiful, Thranduil, and we noticed that you are grieving about something. We wanted to offer comfort if you want us.”

Thranduil didn’t know what to do. One part of him wanted to accept and spend one passionate night in the twins’ arms. They were very attractive and he was sure that he would find great pleasure with them, but another part of him said that he would regret it tomorrow. He wanted only one elf and any replacements wouldn’t ease his pain. Finally, after long consideration, he shook his head sorrowfully.

“I would love to accept, but I can’t. No one can ease this pain, I’m afraid.”

“Would you at least share your burden with us? We really want to help. It is such a shame to see that sad gaze in your beautiful eyes. You can trust us, and everything will remain within these walls.”

The twins’ warm compassion finally broke Thranduil’s expressionless appearance and he found himself telling them everything except Glorfindel’s name. The twins listened in complete silence, upset at seeing Thranduil’s agony. When he finally ceased, the twins did only thing they could.

“We don’t know who has hurt you so, but he must be insane. Nobody in his right mind could ever reject you. Sleep now, lirimaer (lovely one). We have you and we won’t leave you.” Elladan whispered, as they rocked the broken hearted, sobbing elf between them. They held Thranduil in a warm, comforting embrace until gracious reverie finally claimed him.

They didn’t talk much when they rode back home the next morning. Still the silence between them didn’t feel uncomfortable, nor did Thranduil regret his confession. His heart was much lighter than yesterday. He was grateful that the twins had been there when he had most needed a friend. He would never forget their comfort and compassion.

Thranduil’s good mood disappeared instantly when they were back and he saw Glorfindel walking towards the house.

“So he had returned! What am I going to do now? How can I ever face him again?” He thought.

The twins changed a worried glance after noticing that Thranduil’s melancholy had returned. They followed his gaze and realized who was the cause.

// So, it is Glorfindel! This is a surprise for me, gwanur (brother)// Elladan said in his mind.

// What do we do? My heart bleeds after seeing Thranduil’s suffering. I want to help.// Elrohir responded.

//Me too, but I’m not sure if it’s wise to meddle in this. Maybe it’s best if we just keep our eyes open and wait for the possible change to present itself.//

They escorted the king back to his chambers and left after assuring Thranduil that he had their support whenever needed.

Thranduil took a long, hot bath and changed his clothes. It felt heavenly to shake the journey’s dust away and finally put on clean attire. When he was ready, he decided to go and tell Elrond about his decision for a quick return to Mirkwood. It was fruitless and painful to linger here anymore. The negotiations had reached a satisfying result, and he felt the sudden urge to see his son, Legolas. Legolas was a good and loving young elf, and Thranduil loved him dearly.

“Oh, Legolas, my Greenleaf! I miss you sorely. I will be very happy to see you again. I’m sure that when I get home, I’ll forget that this all ever happened. Your smiling face will be the best cure for my wounds.” he thought.

Glorfindel was heading towards Elrond’s study. He needed to give his report to Elrond as soon as possible. He didn’t want to avoid his duties even if his heart was in pain. He was just about to knock, when he froze. He heard long, loud moan and realized that voice had came from Elrond’s study. He listened for a moment more and blushed realizing what that sound was. This particular moment wasn’t the best possible time for a visit. He turned around and walked away, as silently as possible.

“Oh Valar, Erestor! You really enjoy your marriage in its fullest.” Glorfindel thought smirking, and decided to come back later. When he was almost back in his chambers, he saw the only elf he didn’t want to meet, not now when his heart was still severely chafed. But the king had obviously noticed him and was nearing. He couldn’t escape and prayed that Valar would give him enough strength to meet Thranduil.

Thranduil’s being turned cold when he noticed Glorfindel at the corridor. He gathered all his self-control and managed to keep his face completely expressionless, or so he hoped.

“Lord Glorfindel, I see you have returned from your patrol.” Thranduil said calmly.

“My king, I hope that your negotiations with Lord Elrond had been successful.” Glorfindel answered, irritated from Thranduil’s coldness.

“And what else you expected from him, you fool. Your behavior was inexcusable and it’s best if you leave him be. Remember Ecthelion.” Glorfindel’s senses hammered.

“Oh yes, we have reached very satisfying results. In fact, I am on my way to tell Elrond that I leave tomorrow. My trip had fulfilled its purpose and I want to go back as soon as possible. And now, I bid good day to you, Lord Glorfindel.” Thranduil said and intended to go on his way. He had had enough of this pompous, frivolous conversation.

Glorfindel blanched and then blushed when he remembered his own attempt to meet Elrond. Thranduil couldn’t go to Elrond! His timing was the worst possible. What in Arda could he say or do to distract the King?

“I’m sorry, but you can’t go to Elrond at this moment. He is… unavailable now.” Glorfindel stammered.

“And what is that supposed to mean? I know full well that Lord Elrond works every day at this time, and I can wait if he is too busy to see me right away.”

“NO! You can’t go in there!” Glorfindel panicked, and before he realized it, he had grasped the king’s wrist.

Thranduil shivered when he felt Glorfindel’s touch, even if it was slight. He cursed his weakness; this unwanted desire and struggled desperately to get free.

“Lord Glorfindel. Take your hands away from me, now!” He hissed. He had to get away from Glorfindel’s heady proximity before he embarrassed himself completely.

Glorfindel froze. This was second time he had laid his hands upon the king. He released his clutch as if he had burned his hand. Thranduil stumbled backwards after being released so suddenly. He struggled to keep his balance but failed and hit his head on the wall behind him. Darkness enveloped him like a warm protecting blanket.

Glorfindel stared at the king, frightened. What he had done? With an aching heart, he picked Thranduil up and for a moment, he wondered what to do. It was out of question to collect Elrond… or, it would be the last option. After a moments pondering, Glorfindel finally took the unconscious elf into his own room. He lowered him gently onto the bed and leaned closer to examine him and see if he could wake him up. He was relieved after noticing that Thranduil’s heart was beating normally, and he breathed without trouble. It was safe to wait another moment and see if he woke up by himself.
