Chapter 14

Dawn came too soon for a certain white-haired Elfling who was pulled from reverie by Erestor’s voice, telling him to wake. Knowing that he wanted all the time he could get with Erestor before he left, Lindir sat up quickly and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, noticing that Erestor and Glorfindel were already dressed. Trying his hardest not to cry, Lindir crawled out from under the covers and slipped his shoes on.

Erestor sighed when he saw how brave his pen dithen (little one) was trying to be. Crouching down in front of Lindir, Erestor chuckled as he brushed the hair out of his merilin’s (nightingale’s) eyes, “When I get back, we will find a way to keep your hair from getting all tangled at night.”

Lindir could only nod as he stared into the dark-eyes of who he longed to call Ada (Daddy). When Erestor opened his arms, the Elfling threw his around the Advisor’s neck and closed his eyes tightly to try to hold the tears in.

Glorfindel walked out of the bathing chamber and saw the tears in Erestor’s eyes as he held Lindir to him, knowing that this parting was hard on the both of them, and he said softly, “All is ready. Baraon should be down in the courtyard with our mounts.”

Erestor nodded as he slowly stood and took Lindir’s hand in his, “Will you walk with us to the courtyard?” he asked.

Lindir wiped at his tears and whispered, “Yes.”

Erestor smiled down at him and after Glorfindel took Lindir’s other hand the three of them made their way to the courtyard. When they arrived, they found Elrond and Melpomaen standing with Baraon and the horses, heavily laden with their supplies.

Elrond saw the concern in Erestor’s eyes and he looked down at Lindir who had his head bowed and was clinging desperately to his Advisor’s hand. Looking back into Erestor’s dark eyes Elrond silently nodded, letting him know that he would take extra care of Lindir while he was gone. “If there is anything that comes up I will contact Glorfindel. I expect the same of you, should you need me for any reason, just have Glorfindel reach out to me and I will come,” he said.

Erestor smiled, “Hannon le (Thank you), meldir (m. friend),” he said then turned and crouched in front of Lindir. Placing a finger under the pen dithen’s chin, Erestor lifted his face so he could look into the tear-filled eyes of the Elfling’s, “Lindir, you must help Elrond with the twins. We all know how mischievous they can be,” he said and smiled when he was gifted with a small smile from his merilin.

Glorfindel crouched down next to Erestor and ruffled Lindir’s hair and asked, “So, you are going to try to keep those two in line?”

Lindir nodded as he said earnestly, “I can do it.”

“Oh, I have no doubt!” Glorfindel chuckled.

Erestor smiled and asked, “Are you going to write some beautiful music for me when I am gone? I would love to listen to it when I return.”

Lindir nodded emphatically and said, “Yes! I will practice every day when you are gone.”

“That’s my merilin,” Erestor said as he tapped Lindir’s nose then drew the Elfling into an embrace, hugging him tightly, “I will miss you, pen dithen.”

Lindir squeezed Erestor then laid a wet kiss onto the Advisor’s cheek before he gave Fin a hug, then stepped back and placed his hand in Elrond’s outstretched one. Taking a deep breath, Lindir bit his lip, trying to keep his tears in check.

Erestor stood and caressed Lindir’s cheek before he looked to Elrond and said, “Namárië (Farewell), mellon nín (my friend), and hannon le for everything. I will see you come spring.”

Elrond nodded to Erestor and said, “Garo lend vaer (Have a good journey), mellyn nín (my friends).”

Glorfindel smiled, “Namárië, meldir and hannon le,” he said, then he helped Erestor mount his horse and then swung up onto Asfaloth.

Erestor turned his horse and smiled down at Lindir, “I will see you soon. You will see; spring will be here before you know it.”

Lindir nodded and said in a tearful voice, “I will see you when you get back.”

Erestor nodded once then turned his horse around and followed Glorfindel and Baraon down the lane, not able to stop a single tear to escape, and he wiped it away with the back of his hand.

Elrond and Lindir stood there and watched until they could no longer see the trio and then the Peredhel turned and said, “Lindir, you have something waiting for you in your chambers.”

Lindir looked up at Elrond as they walked back to the Last Homely House and asked, “I do? What is it?”

Elrond smiled down at the Elfling and said, “It is a surprise from Erestor.”

Lindir looked over his shoulder quickly, half expecting to see the Advisor, but when he did not, his shoulders slumped and he bowed his head. Wiping his nose with the sleeve of his tunic, Lindir sniffled and stayed quiet the rest of the way to his chambers.

Elrond sighed to himself at the sad penneth (young one) and knew that he was going to have to come up with some things to distract him. As they walked into Lindir’s and the twins’ bedchamber, they heard Elrohir and Elladan arguing.

“No ‘Dan, do not do that. You will hurt it!”

“Wait, leave it in the basket!”

“Ionnath (Sons), I thought you were told not to disturb the basket?” Elrond asked, arching his brow.

Elrohir and Elladan whirled around and stood away from Lindir’s bed, trying to not look guilty, ““We were just checking on it, making sure that is was all right. That it could breathe.””

Lindir walked over to his bed and the wiggling basket that sat upon it and asked, “It? What is it?”

The twins rushed to his side and Elladan said, “Oh, you will love it!”

“Yes! What are you going to name it?” Elrohir asked.

“Ionnath, saes (please), give him a chance to open his present,” Elrond said as he took each of his ionnath by the neck and pulled them back, “Let us give him room.”

Lindir cautiously opened the lid to the basket and up popped a head, “Oh! He is so cute!” the Elfling said as he reached in and took out the black kitten with white paws and a white patch on one ear, almost resembling a star-like shape.

“Erestor thought that you would like him. He rescued him, after its mother was killed, from a wild boar. He wanted to give it to you for Yuletide but since he will not be here, he asked that I give it to you now. It needs cared for,” Elrond said as he sat on the bed with the Elflings.

Lindir sat the kitten in his lap and scratched its ear, “How sad. Then it is an orphan, too. Why did Erestor not give the kitten to me himself?” Lindir asked, looking up at Elrond with fresh tears in his eyes.

“I think Erestor was too upset, not being here for Yuletide, to give it to you. He knew that you would be sad that he would be gone.”

A tear fell down Lindir’s cheek and he said, “But I told him that I understood why he was leaving. Did he not believe me?”

Elrond’s eyes filled with tears as he watched the Elfling clutch the kitten to his breast and started to really cry and he said, “Penneth, Erestor knows. But you need to understand. Erestor is going through a difficult time. He lost someone very close to him a long time ago and he never dealt with that loss. Instead of time healing him, it made it worse, bottled all the anger and pain inside and now he is just letting himself heal. You must be patient with him.”

Lindir buried his face in the soft fur of his kitten and sniffled, “I will. I just want him to get better.”

Elrond smiled at him and said, “He is, is he not? He was able to hug you without it causing him pain. That is a tremendous start.”

The whole time, Elladan and Elrohir had been silent, until finally they chimed in, ““Lindir, do not be worried, Erestor will get better. We know he will.””

Lindir looked at the twins and smiled through his tears, knowing that the Elflings often knew things before they happened. That was how one time they managed to sneak out and then return, just before they would have been caught. Looking down at his new kitten, he scratched its ear, causing the feline to start purring very loudly.

“I think he likes that very much,” Elrond chuckled, “What are you going to name him?”

Lindir picked him up and looked into the yellow eyes and thought for a few moments then smiled, “How do you like Elenath (Starry)? I think that is a perfect name for you.”

“Purr…...”

Elladan and Elrohir bounced up and down and said, ““Oh, that is a good name!””

“Yes it is. Now, why do you not take him to the kitchen and see if cook will give you a saucer of milk for him,” Elrond said as he stood and then walked with the Elflings out into the hallway.
