Disclaimer: Not true.
Notes: There will be a happy end!! Promise!!!!!!!!
13. Hospital
Dave didn’t know how long he hadn’t slept. Two days? 36 hours? Longer? It didn’t really matter.
~*~
“Dave? Answer me, mate?” Craig’s voice sounded alarmed. “Marton!” he called his lover. “Dave’s lying on the floor and he doesn’t answer me!”
Marton appeared in the small bedroom. “Fuck…” he cursed and kneeled down next to his Dave, starting to examine his friend. “He’s breathing, but…” Marton looked up at his lover. “Craig, get an ambulance,” he commanded.
“No…” they heard a weak voice whisper and looked down at Dave who had opened his eyes a little. “No time… Have to…”
“You don’t have to do anything,” Marton said in a strict voice. “You will go to see a fucking doctor. End of discussion!”
“NO!” Dave yelled in panic, fighting Marton and Craig to get up. “You don’t understand, Jared… I have to…”
“What happened, Dave?” Craig asked tenderly and put a hand on Marton’s arm to silence the taller man. “Tell us…”
“Jared…” Dave whimpered, grimacing as his head protested when he tried to sit up too quickly. “Have to…next plane to Sydney… Needs me!”
“Ok,” Craig nodded, understanding perfectly what Dave tried to tell them. “Marton, book us three tickets for the next flight to Sydney. I’ll take care of our friend here and pack our bags…”
~*~
“Why didn’t you go to a fucking doctor when I told you to?” Dave sniffled and took hold of Jared’s pale hand, careful not to squeeze it too hard and hurt the other man. Jared had been unconscious for the last 24 hours now the doctors had told Dave when he finally arrived at the hospital. Thanks to Craig and Marton they had gotten on the first possible flight.
~*~
“Dave!” Craig breathed softly, but distinctively. “You must eat something! It
won’t help Jared at all if you pass out with exhaustion before we get to Sydney. You have to be strong for him!”
Dave nodded numbly and obeyed, nearly choking on the nearly tasteless food the stewardess had placed in front of him. “Sorry,” he mumbled and stood up, forcing his way past Marton who was sitting next to him. “I have to…” Thankfully he made it to the narrow toilet before he threw up the contents of his nearly empty stomach.
//Dear God…// Dave prayed as salty tears started to fill his eyes, trying to swallow the sour taste that was lingering in his mouth. //Don’t let him die… Please…//

“Mr Wenham?” a female voice asked and a hand was softly patting Dave’s shoulder.
“Yes?” Dave asked sleepily, turning to check on Jared first. The other man was still breathing. Relieved, Dave turned to face the nurse. “Yes?” he repeated, rubbing his eyes while he cursed himself for falling asleep. That wouldn’t happen again, Jared needed him awake.
“I just wanted to ask if you needed anything,” the nurse said tenderly. “A blanket? Something to eat?” Worried eyes were trailing over Dave’s exhausted form. “You need to eat, Sir!”
“No, thank you,” Dave shook his head. “I don’t need anything.” He turned around and let the back of his hand carefully brush over Jared’s pale cheek.
The nurse sighed deeply, but left the room.
“Everything will be alright,” Dave tried to soothe himself and Jared, too. He didn’t know, but maybe the unconscious man could hear his voice and it mad him feel better… “I know that you’ll be fine. I’m here with you now…”
~*~
“He called us himself,” the doctor explained. The same doctor who had called Dave some hours before. Was it only some hours? It had felt so long to Dave, the urge to help Jared nearly killing him while he was seemingly imprisoned in the airplane.
“Said he didn’t feel well and asked us to get him,” Dr Nickel continued. “He was already immensely weakened when we got to his house. Very high fever….”
Dave nodded numbly, thankful that Marton and Craig were supporting him, because he surely would have fallen to the ground other wisely.
“He kept asking for you, Mr Wenham, told us to call you,” the doctor sighed. “He repeated your phone number over and over again until he passed out, that’s how I could inform you about Mr Leto’s state. ‘Phone Davie. Tell Davie to come so he needn’t be worried…’ That were his exact words.”
Marton felt that Dave was trembling and wrapped his strong arms around the smaller man, letting Dave weep on his shoulder.

“Fuck…” Dave cursed as he realised that he had fallen asleep again and straightened his aching back. “Sorry, Jared,” he mumbled and reached out for the other man’s hand. “What kind of best mate am I falling asleep when you need me the most?” He frowned, carefully rubbing Jared’s ice-cold fingers with his thumb to warm them. “Jared?” Dave asked quietly, but of course no answer came. “Jared!” Dave repeated salty tears starting to fill his eyes. He couldn’t be… Couldn’t… Frantically Dave checked the other man’s pulse.
Nothing… He wasn’t breathing wasn’t…
Dave’s shoulders started to shake violently as he realised that his friend had gone and he hadn’t even been there to say goodbye. “Jared…” he sobbed, breaking down on the white bed his friend was lying on.
It couldn’t be! Where were the machines beeping angrily Dave had so often seen on Emergency Room? No machine forcing Jared’s heart to beat again, no sound to warn Dave that Jared was leaving.
David laid down his head on Jared’s side, still holding the other man’s cold fingers tightly in his hands. “No…” he whispered over and over again in a high-pitched voice, his voice muffled by tears, not wanting to believe what had just happened. “No…”
It was only minutes until strong arms pulled Dave away from Jared’s dead body into a warm embrace. “It’s alright…” Craig whispered, tears streaming down his face as well as he rubbed soothing circles over Dave’s back. “Shh…”
Dave looked up at Craig when he felt the other man’s lips touch his hair, his gaze empty and more dead than Jared’s eyes would ever be… “It will never be alright again…” he whispered in a voice so full of pain that it made Craig flinch. “How can it ever be alright again now that he’s dead?”
Tbc…
Um…sorry? I know that many of you hoped that Dave and Jared would end up together, but I swear I had this planned from the very beginning on!! Really! *waves with strange piece of paper full of notes!* I can prove it!! I’ve grown to love Jared while writing this and I swear it hurt me just as much as it hurts you now to go through this, but… I had to stick to my plans to make this work.
A little explanation for the following chapters: We will travel into the future and the remaining chapters will all be set approximately 10 years from now. I need to do this, because I need Dave’s, Beanie’s and Viggo’s kids to be grown up. Let yourselves be surprised! As I said, Dave will be happy in the end – just without Jared… *cries*
Um…do I still dare to ask for a review? You may yell at me!
Jesus fuck, I nearly forgot! Thank you for everybody for their lovely reviews! Feedback is the thing that keeps me writing and so... ;P
