Chapter Thirteen: i Cilme

The final days of their stay in Eglarest flew by without a second thought and soon the day of the Spring Festival was upon Glorfindel, Idril, and Elrilya. Having found time to catch up on the years missed, Glorfindel became closer to his two young friends than he thought possible before. They met for meals daily discussing the everyday occurrences around the city or simply enjoying the others company.

On the eve of the Spring Festival fresh news had been brought. Turgon had written to Idril and Elrilya confirming their plans of returning within the month. He also sent word of a great meeting of elves King Fingolfin was planning for mid-spring and hoped they would return in time for the gathering. Cirdan and his manor had received an invite as well. The lord of West Beleriand and Falas was quite honored to be a part of such a collection of elves. He had already begun his plans for his departure.

Idril and Elrilya had penned responses to Turgon to send back with the messenger and encouraged Glorfindel to do so as well so that Turgon would know his good friend was finally returning. Things were beginning to return to how they once were. The day of the festival found the three Noldor in the merrymaking flourishing through the city streets as all celebrated the coming of warmer days.

“I love the music of this festival,” Idril said clapping along as they stood by a small wind ensemble of flutes and whistles playing a quirky song while elflings danced in circles together.

“It does make one want to smile and dance,” Glorfindel agreed.

“I do not know if I have the energy in me to keep up with that pace!” Elrilya laughed.

Not long later the song ended and the crowd dispersed from around the dancers. The three followed in suit, heading back to the main hall. The day had been long but joyful and the night’s festivities were still to come. Many went home to rest and have their evening meals before joining the parties and celebrations later that would continue through the night. However, the weather seemed to be turning bleak and many worried that many of the festivities would have to be moved inside or all together cancelled.

Upon entering the halls, Idril gave a squeal as she espied something on a table in the foyer. Glorfindel and Elrilya quickly followed, curious as to what Idril had spotted.

“I cannot believe I almost forgot about this,” Idril was saying as she reached into a large container.

Glorfindel chuckled as Elrilya sighed, shaking her head at Idril. What she had espied was the room assignments for the bedroom merrymaking of the night. Glorfindel, without hesitation, reached into the second container, marked for ellyn. Elrilya just stared at the both of them, not sure as to what to say.

“Oh do not stare at me like that,” Idril said to her. “It is all for fun and you should do it at least once.”

The look on her friend’s face showed she was not budging. Being that it was nearing sunset and Idril and Glorfindel would need to prepare for their trysts, they returned to the residential wing of the halls. Idril hurried on ahead of Glorfindel and Elrilya had a faster pace.

“I do not see what is incredibly exciting about this,” Elrilya said to him.

“It is the unknown and the untried,” Glorfindel said, though he was an expert in it after all with all his conquests. “At times, one finds pleasure in the many options available to them.”

“I do not know if I agree with that,” Elrilya sighed. “It seems strange to me to have so many lovers.”

“Some see it as a testing of their choice,” Glorfindel commented. “For when they finally find their mate for life, they know it is true.”

Elrilya seemed to mull over his opinion for a few moments but had said nothing by the time they got to her and Idril’s room.

“I do not want to sound redundant,” Glorfindel said before she followed Idril inside. “But perhaps you should consider giving it a chance.”

“Maybe next time,” Elrilya said, a small smile on her thin lips. “I do not think I would be ready for tonight.”

“I understand,” Glorfindel said. “I bid you goodnight and hope you can entertain yourself while we are out.”

“I shall manage,” she said and shut the door.

Glorfindel left his room with paper in hand to find where he would be spending his night. A storm had blown in, worsening the already depressing cloudy weather that many events had been moved inside or elsewhere. The night was darker than usual and little torchlight lit the hallways due to much of the wood supply being drenched and soaked. Glorfindel was glad however that this particular event was not influenced by the weather.
The corridor where he was to go was short and he quickly found the room he was searching for. A sign on the door showed that his partner had already arrived and was waiting for him. With a smirk and deep breath, Glorfindel walked through the door into the sitting room and closed it behind him. The door to the bedroom had been closed and in the dark he found his way to it and entered.
