Chapter thirteen

The sun was already high on the sky by the time Elrond, Legolas and their guards continued their journey the following morning. Noone talked much and they rode in silence for several hours. Once again they stopped when the heat and exertion began to be too much for the horses.

“There’s a small stream nearby”, shouted one of the guards. “Let us take the horses there.”

Legolas dismounted and took the reins of his own horse and also those of Elrond’s horse. He then lead them to the stream. “Don’t drink too much”, he said kindly and released them. Arod neighed and nuzzled the Elf’s hand before running to the water. Legolas smiled at the horse fondly.

Elrond was beginning to feel a bit anxious. They hadn’t discussed what had taken place the previous night, since Elrond feared what Legolas thought of him. Elrond of Rivendell wasn’t known for his cowardness, though, so when the Prince returned he asked him to come to sit with him. Legolas obliged and sat down.

“What are your thoughts regarding last night, greenleaf?” He asked gently. He was surprised when Legolas smiled and looked at him instead of turning away or leaving altogether.

“You gave me comfort and I’m very grateful for that”, he answered honestly. Elrond smiled back at him, relieved.

“So what is it that has made you broody, if not the comfort we shared?” He asked half-teasingly.

Legolas didn’t answer right away but took a water skin from his traveling back. He took a long swig. “I have merely comtemplated on my pregnancy during the ride”, he replied after swallowing the liquid.

“Really!” Was all Lord Elrond said. “What of it?”

“I’ve always known of my ability to bear children, but I thought that I wouldn’t become pregnant until I was at least three thousand years old. And when I met Aragorn and fell in love with him, it didn’t change my plans, since I was aware of his possibility to become immortal through our bond. In other words I didn’t mean to carry a child in a very long time”, Legolas said seriously. “And when I learned about my pregnancy I wasn’t happy at all. It made me think of my independency and what would come of it.” After saying that Legolas fell silent for a long time.

“But your feelings have changed, have they not?” Elrond asked when it became obvious that the Prince wasn’t going to continue.

“Yes, indeed they have”, Legolas said and a smile crossed his lips. “At first I thought the child was a nuisance that hindered me from being who I am, a warrior and a Prince. It took some time to realise that that’s not all I am. I’m also a father now, and that role is the most important of them all. I love him, Elrond, I love this child so much. I would go to Mordor and back again if that kept him safe.”

“I’ve also realised that I’ve been very selfish of late.” He continued after a moment of thinking. “I’ve denied Aragorn the chance to see his child grow inside of me. I felt angry and betrayed so I decided not to spend any time with him and kept his child from him in the process. I was so childish! I wish I could turn back time. I would do so many things differently.” Legolas buried his fair face into his palms.

Elrond stroked his silken hair and murmured supportingly. “Noone can blame you for your actions, young Prince. And as I’ve said before, not everything is lost yet. Give yourself – and Aragorn - some time to think things over.”

“Thank you”, Legolas said sincerely. “What would I do without you?”

The Prince and the Lord of Imladris fell into companionable silence. “I shall go and freshen up a bit”, Legolas finally said and stood up. “I’m sweating almost as much as the horses.”

He sat down by the stream and watched the horses as they played in the water. He let his mind wander back to the time when the Fellowship was in Lothlorien. Boromir had approached him there.

/“Is it true that Mirkwood males can conceive?” Boromir asked one night./

/Legolas was surprised to hear such a question and lifted his gaze from the arrows he was making. “Excuse me?”/

/“I’ve heard that Mirkwood males can bear children, is that true?” Boromir repeated the question./

/“It is possible, yes”, Legolas said slowly, wondering where this was leading, “but for royals only.”/

/“Aren’t you afraid of getting pregnant yourself?” Boromir asked gravely./

/“Why do you ask this?” Legolas asked in turn. He had put the arrows away for he sensed this was a discussion that needed his whole attention./

/“I was only thinking. The other night I saw Aragorn… pleasuring you”, he finally said. “This isn’t a good time to be with child, you must know that.”/

/“I have no intension whatsoever to get pregnant. There’s too much going on right now, too many battles to fight”, Legolas said in a tone that suggested Boromir keep his mouth shut and not interfere./

/“But obviously you aren’t using any kind of protection, are you?” Boromir asked sharply. “How can you be sure you won’t conceive?”/

/“Boromir, please, let us not discuss this”. Legolas was now very irritated. “’Tis no business of yours.”/

/“But it is my business!” Boromir insisted. “Your pregnancy would keep you away from the battle where you’re needed. Instead you would have to be protected, like other women.”/

/Legolas stood up looking furious. “I’m no female, you stupid, arrogant, ignorant man! I need no-ones protection, pregnant or not. I’d fought in thousands of battles before the kingdom of Gondor even existed. I’ve kept the borders of Mirkwood safe more than two thousand years. Do not treat me with disrespect, man of Gondor, or you will be deeply sorry.”/

/Legolas’ delicate features were twisted by anger. His normally blue eyes were almost black now. Boromir had never seen the Elf this angry before. Boromir had obviously hurt his pride greatly – and Legolas indeed was truly proud, even for an Elf. “I… I’m sorry Legolas, I didn’t want to upset you this much”, he whispered./

/“You’re sorry…for what? For seeing I’m not a fragile little Princeling from Mirkwood, pampered by his father, easily intimidated by a rough man of Gondor?” Legolas’ face softened somewhat. “I’ve been a warrior for a very long time, Boromir. Do not think I don’t know where I belong. And never, never, refer to me as a female again.”/

/“I am sorry, Legolas. It truly wasn’t my intention to say such things. I just…” Boromir hesitated. “I guess it’s just hard for me to see you and Aragorn so close to each other… It reminds me of my own loneliness.”/

/”There’s no maiden waiting for you in Minas Tirith?” Legolas asked kindly./

/Boromir gave a short, bitter laugh. “Nay. Only my brother… and my father. No maidens.”/

/Legolas squeezed his shoulder gently. “As long as you wish my friendship shall be yours. You’re not alone, Boromir. Please know this.”/

/"Maybe not alone… but lonely”, Boromir said quietly and Legolas couldn’t think of anything to say to that./

/”I cannot become pregnant now”, he said after a while and smiled at Boromir’s surprised expression. “I can only conceive after I’ve been bonded to my mate. And that will have to wait until the Ring is destroyed and Aragorn crowned as the King.”/

/Boromir gave one of his rare smiles. “I’m relieved to hear that, Legolas. Thank you for telling me. And”, he added somewhat shyly, “as long as you wish my friendship you shall have it, as well.”/

*~*~*~*~*~*

Legolas smiled sadly. Boromir had been a worthy comrade and his death had grieved him greatly. “Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve”* he whispered. The memory of Boromir made him think of the other human in the Fellowship, his own husband and the father of his child. Suddenly he missed his mate more than ever before. “Aragorn”, he sobbed. “Aragorn…”

“Legolas!” Lord Elrond shouted. “Would you please bring the horses, we should continue.”

Legolas hastily wiped his eyes and fetched the horses. They continued their journey in silence, once again.

A/N: I’m quite aware that there wasn’t much action in this chapter… I just wanted to give Legolas a chance to think of the changes within himself. :)

*Some of you probably recognized the line from “Lament for Boromir”, which of course is written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It can be read in a whole here http://www.cs.rice.edu/~ssiyer/minstrels/poems/46.html . The first verse was sung by Aragorn as well as the third, while Legolas sang the second.
