Chapter 12 - Ronihim's Madness

Haldir strode quickly into the King's Royal Chamber and was immediately accosted by a tall elf dressed in green. He blocked Haldir's way and raised both his hands.

"The King can see no one today."

Haldir's eyes flashed. "It is imperative that I speak with the King."

But the tall elf shook his head. "This cannot be at the moment. The King is in seclusion with Prince Ronihim."

Haldir frowned. That was very bad news. He pressed the point, "I bear news of importance to the realm, either grant me pass or step aside." Sentries posted at the entrance to the chamber moved closer to Haldir in a silent gesture of support. This was not lost on the elf. He sighed.

"Very well, Lord Haldir." He stepped aside and allowed the tall warrior to pass. Haldir half turned to the two elf sentries and ordered them back to their post. Alone he walked quickly and confidently toward the King's Royal Hall. He wondered why he had been denied access. This had never happened to him before.

Pushing the heavy doors aside, he noticed that there were no sentries posted to the King's Hall. He was very surprised to see this and more so when he turned his head, looking for the King and found instead Ronihim locked in a passionate embrace with a young elf maiden.

Hearing his entry, both elves sprang apart and the maid ran quickly past a rigid Haldir who scrutinized the Hall. Where was Eadril? He turned blazing eyes at Ronihim who was slowly adjusting his clothes.

"I do not know what you think you are doing..." he began slowly. But Haldir cut him off with a whisper.

"Dina! Amin feuya ten' lle!!" Haldir walked passed Ronihim, looking for Eadril. Hs bes beginning to suspect the worst.

The King's Hall was empty and Haldir quickly walked to the heavy doors he knew led to Eadril's private chambers. But before he could reach them, Ronihim, in his rage, blocked Haldir. Turning blazing eyes on the Prince, Haldir's lifeforce began to glow brighter, and Ronihim began to regret getting in the Commander's way. Abruptly, Haldir attempted to walk around Ronihim, but the Prince reached out to Haldir in an effort to prevent the Commander from taking another step. Haldir closed his eyes and took a deep breath to control himself.

"Do not touch me!" Haldir hissed. His gaze travelled to Ronihim's hand where it tightly held Haldir's forearm, unable to conceal the contempt and disgust in his voice. Slowly, Haldir's eyes travelled back to Ronihim's face, challenging the younger elf with a cold and hard stare.

Ronihim's eyes widened in shock. How dare this base-born elf speak to him, a Prince, in such a manner!

Dropping his hold on Haldir, feeling the sting of Haldir's contempt, he raged, "I am a Prince of the realm!" He still blocked Haldir's way, but dared not touch him.

Haldir met Ronihim's blazing fury with a calm defiance. He stared at the Prince for a moment, allowing the full impact of his thoughts and emotions toward Ronihim to be clearly reflected in his eyes. At the revelation before him, the Prince of Thalion Tirion hesitated for he saw power and determination there. And this frightened the Prince. Somewhere in Ronihim's unhinged mind this made a connection. He shook his head and realized his head ached. What was it Haldir had said? Lowering his head, he reached up and cradled it in his hands.

Haldir saw the turmoil in Ronihim and realized he had no time for this. Stepping closer to the Prince, Haldir whispered, "Where is your Father, Prince Ronihim?"

Ronihim shook his head and began to cry.

Haldir, unsheathing his sword, strode past Ronihim and pushed open the doors to Eadril's room.

It was empty. Haldir quietly looked about him, while Ronihim sobbed in the outer chamber. Haldir's quick eyes noticed no blood spilled, no clothing rent or furniture moved. Indeed it looked as if the chamber had been deliberately cleaned. He turned back to glare at Ronihim. Most likely the work of the elf maiden he'd found with the Prince.

Sheathing his sword and without a further word to Ronihim, Haldir left the Eadril's chamber and strode out of the King's Hall. Within moments the entire Palace was alerted to Eadril's disappearance.

Although Haldir suspected treachery by Ronihim, he kept his thoughts deeply buried, yet still assigned surveillance over Ronihim's activities, at least while he was within the confines of Avonea.
