Chapter 12
Glorfindel awoke to find Anor’s rays starting to lighten the sky. Closing his eyes, he gently buried his nose in Erestor’s hair to drink in the smell of his dark locks, and then he raised his head to rest it in his hand as he looked at the two most important ellyn (m. elves) to him. He smiled as he heard Lindir’s soft snores and the sight of Erestor holding the Elfling in his arms while they both slept. Glorfindel was quite content to lay there and watch the two sleep, knowing that there was no where he would rather be. If he had his way, this would be the sight that greeted him on many mornings to come.
Elrond was suddenly awakened by hands that shook him and identical voices speaking as one, ““Ada (Daddy), you must wake! Lindir, he did not come to bed last night and when we woke this morning, his bed was not slept in. Saes (please), Ada! You must help us find him!””
Elrond sighed as he sat up and replied, “Hush now, be still, ionnath (sons). Lindir is most likely in Erestor’s chambers. He was going there last night to talk with Erestor and he must have stayed the night with him.”
Elladan and Elrohir were not convinced and said, ““But Ada! We do not know for sure! Saes, we must go check then.””
“How about I ask Glorfindel if he is there, hmm?” he asked, trying to appease his offspring, which was not easy to do when they were worried about someone or something.
When they both nodded, he smiled and reached out and brushed his mind with Glorfindel and upon finding the Slayer awake, asked, ‘Is Lindir with you and Erestor? I have two very worried ionnath here.’
Glorfindel almost chuckled when he heard Elrond’s voice and said, ‘Yes, he is. You may tell your pin nith (young ones) that he is fine.’
Looking at his ionnath, Elrond knew that if he were going to get any peace, they would need to see Lindir with their own eyes. ‘I do not think that will suffice. Prepare yourself, I will be arriving soon with two very determined pin dithin (little ones),’ Elrond chuckled.
Glorfindel shook his head, ‘Very well, but give me a few minutes to rouse Erestor and Lindir; they are still asleep.’
‘Of course,’ Elrond replied than looked at his ionnath and said, “Why do we not go to the kitchens and gather some food and we all can break our fast in Erestor’s chambers?”
Elladan and Elrohir jumped up and down, ““Oh, yes! That is a wonderful idea!””
They both started to tug on their Ada’s hands and both started to ramble on, starting with Elrohir, “We will bring their favorites!”
“Yes, Lindir likes those raspberry filled pastries.”
“And Fin and Erestor like those cinnamon swirl ones.”
Elrond managed to extricate his hands out of his ionnath and said, “Saes, stop. I need to get dressed. It will not do for the Lord of Imladris to go traipsing around in his sleeping pants!”
The twins stopped and while they waited for their Ada they continued with the list of what everyone liked, “Fin likes tea,” Elladan said.
“And Erestor likes that nasty Adan (Man) drink, that stuff called coffee,” Elrohir said as both he and his brother scrunched up their noses as they remembered the one and only time they tasted the foul brew. They had been curious as to what it would taste like. They always thought it smelled delicious and Master Erestor seemed to almost need the drink every morning. He would always take a deep breath, smelling the coffee before taking a sip and sighing. So they did what any curious Elfling would do, they snuck some. They fought over who would take the first drink until they decided to find another cup and divided the dark liquid. When they took a big swig of the brew, they spewed it all over the other, gagging at the bitterness of it. To this day, they could not believe that something that smelled so delicious could taste so foul.
By the time the memory played out in their minds, Elrond was dressed and they were on their way to the kitchen for food and more of that nasty coffee.
Glorfindel gently shook Erestor’s shoulder and whispered, “Es, time to wake.”
Erestor reluctantly stirred and blinked his eyes to look up into Glorfindel’s and said, “Good morning.”
Glorfindel smiled, “Good morning to you. It seems that we will be having company soon. The twins were worried that Lindir did not return to their chambers last night and nothing Elrond can say will appease them.”
Erestor sighed as he looked to Lindir and smiled as he heard the Elfling’s soft snores. Brushing back Lindir’s white hair, he said, “Penneth, time to get up.”
Glorfindel chuckled when he heard Lindir moan and bury himself under the covers. “It seems our penneth is not a morning person,” he said as he crawled out of bed.
Erestor pulled back the covers and said, “Lindir, Elrond and the twins will be here soon. Do you want to be still abed when they arrive?”
Lindir wanted to stay just where he was. Not since he had lost his parents had he slept so peacefully. He was never early to rise and in fact, were it not for Elladan and Elrohir, he would sleep in most mornings. But it was impossible when he had two very hyper Elflings jumping up and down on his bed. Stretching, he peeked through his hair and saw Erestor smiling down at him and asked, “Sleep well?”
Erestor shook his head at the mess that was Lindir’s hair and replied, “Yes, and you?”
Lindir nodded and sat up to look around the room and spied Glorfindel at the hearth, building up the waning fire. “I need to use the privy,” he said as he scrambled out from underneath the covers, nearly falling to the floor in the process.
Erestor quickly grabbed a hold of Lindir’s arm to stay his fall and once he was sure the Elfling had his feet under him he asked, “Will you bring me my brush when you return? It is on the counter in the bathing chamber.”
Lindir smiled, “Yes, of course,” he said as he made his way into the bathing chamber and shut the door.
Glorfindel walked over to the bed and helped Erestor straighten the covers and asked, “How are you this morning? We have a long day ahead of us, if we are going to be ready to leave in the morning.”
“I am fine, in fact, I have not slept so well in a long time,” he said then walked around the bed to Glorfindel’s side, “Hannon le (Thank you), Fin, for everything.”
Glorfindel smiled as he tucked a stray lock behind Erestor’s ear, “You are most welcome,” he said, then when he saw Lindir walking back into the room he said, “My turn.”
Lindir smiled at Glorfindel as he passed him and when Erestor sat back up on the bed and motioned him to sit before him, he crawled on top of the mattress, handing him the brush.
“Hannon le. Now, turn around and scoot closer to me so I can try to brush your hair,” he said.
Lindir shuddered but complied and soon he felt the first attempt by Erestor to pass the brush through his hair. When he heard Erestor comment that he did not know how anyone could manage to get their hair in such a tangle, he shrugged, “I do not know how I do it. Lady Celebrían has tried everything to keep my hair from getting all knotted up at night. Nothing works.”
Erestor shook his head and tried to be as gentle as he could. When he heard Glorfindel open the door he asked if he could bring the vial of oil that he used for his hair and soon he managed to get most of the snarls free from Lindir’s hair by the time Elrond and the twins arrived.
When Lindir heard a knock on the door, he knew that his time with Erestor was almost up and he could not contain his disappointment. This did not go unnoticed by the ellon (m. elf) that sat behind him and when Erestor heard the dejected sigh and saw Lindir’s shoulders sag, he asked, “Lindir, you know that I have a busy day ahead of me. Would you do me a favor and help Fin and I today? We must make sure that all the provisions that we need to take with us are packed and accounted for.”
Lindir turned around quickly and smiled as he flung his arms around Erestor’s neck. When he realized what he just did, he started to pull away but was stopped by Erestor’s arms holding him close. Nodding emphatically, he gasped, “Yes, I would love to help you and Fin.”
When Elrond entered Erestor’s bedchamber and saw his Advisor holding Lindir and the joy on his face, he nearly dropped the tray that he was holding. When Erestor noticed him, he let go of the Elfling and motioned towards the door and Lindir slid off the bed to be surrounded by Elladan and Elrohir who immediately started to tell of their worry for him and to ask why he did not tell them that he would be sleeping in Erestor’s chambers.
Finally when the adults managed to get the Elflings settled down and sitting in front of the fire with their breakfast, the three of them sat at the table and started going over today’s itinerary as they ate. Elrond listen to Erestor and Glorfindel tell him of all that they needed to accomplish for their journey. Through the whole conversation, Erestor would glance over to the Elflings, to Lindir, and this did not go unnoticed by Elrond. Neither did the fact that Lindir would look towards their table, as if to make sure that Erestor was still here.
Elrond sat back in his chair after finishing his food and said, “I have arranged for dinner to be served for us in my private chambers. I thought that you two would prefer that than having to answer the myriad of questions for why you are leaving that you would receive if you ate in the main feasting hall.”
Erestor was relieved and he replied, “Hannon le. I have asked Lindir to help me today, with my packing. He will probably stay the night with us once more, so I will make sure the twins know so they do not worry.”
“It was nice seeing you able to hold him. You really have come a long way. I have faith that you will come to terms with the past and will be able to move on,” Elrond said and smiled when he saw Glorfindel place his hand over Erestor’s.
“Will King Thranduil be joining us for dinner?” Glorfindel asked as he lightly squeezed Erestor’s hand, knowing that talk of dinner brought the thought of his and Elrond’s discussion about the past.
Erestor knew that he owed Elrond everything and he could not seem to stifle the shame he felt for not having the courage before, to let Elrond explain whatever he so longed to. As he listened to Glorfindel and Elrond speak of Thranduil, he tightened his own fingers around Fin’s, grateful for his companionship and everything his meldir (m. friend) had done for him so far and was willing to do for him.
“Yes, a winter with the King can be trying at best,” Glorfindel chuckled.
“You can laugh, you will not be here. Within a month’s time I am going to have to come up with ways to entertain him since the snows will be here and outside activities will be limited,” Elrond scowled.
“Come now, Elrond, I do not think it will be all that bad. At least his bed will be occupied,” Glorfindel smiled as he took a sip of his tea.
Arching a brow, Elrond queried, “And who has caught his eye? It had better not be anyone that I care for. I know how he can be.”
Glorfindel took pity on him and said, “Be as ease, Elrond. It is one of my warriors, Garthon. I got the feeling that they became acquainted during King Thranduil’s last visit here.”
Elrond could not contain his sigh of relief and said, “You had better tell Baraon before you leave that Garthon is to stay in Imladris this winter, no border patrols. If Thranduil and he enjoy each other’s company, then he is to stay here. In fact, put him on the guard rotation for The Last Homely House.”
Glorfindel laughed, “Yes, mellon nín.”
“Well then, I have things to attend to. I will send a servant by later to pick up these dishes. Is there anything I can get for you two before I leave?” Elrond asked as he stood and walked towards his ionnath.
Erestor stood and said, “No, we are fine. I will speak with you later, though. I need to go over a few things with you and Melpomaen.”
Elrond nodded as he tried to pry Elladan and Elrohir from Lindir’s side, “Of course. Why do we not meet after the noon meal, in my office?”
Erestor said that was fine and when Elrond and his ionnath were gone, he started to pile the dishes upon the tray with Glorfindel’s and Lindir’s help. After that was completed, Glorfindel said that he had to check in with Baraon and would return shortly and he also left, leaving Erestor and Lindir alone together.
Lindir went and sat on the settee and asked, “What do you need to do first, Erestor?”
Erestor walked over to his closet and said over his shoulder, “I suppose I should pack my clothing and other sundry items that I will need.”
Lindir walked over and helped Erestor take out a few satchels from the closet. As Erestor put the clothing that he would be taking with him onto the bed, Lindir proceeded to fold them. Once he was finished with that, he put them into the satchels while Erestor retrieved things from his bathing chamber.
After they were finished in Erestor’s chambers, they moved on to the kitchens and so forth. In Lindir’s mind, the day progressed too quickly; the time of Erestor’s and Glorfindel’s departure from Imladris drawing ever closer. When Erestor had been in his meeting with Elrond and Melpomaen, he helped Glorfindel with the horses and carrying their travel packs to the stables. Now it was nearly dinner time and Glorfindel had left to finish the last few things that need his attention in the barracks. Lindir watched Erestor become more and more uncomfortable and fidgety, and in fact he would become thus every time Fin was gone for any length of time. He truly hoped that when they returned in the spring, Erestor would be healed. It hurt Lindir to see Erestor like this.
When Glorfindel returned from the barracks, the three of them walked to Elrond’s private chambers, talking about their day and discussing the last few things that needed to be done before they could retire for the night.
