Chapter ten taking a bath
Days have passed like snow melting in the sun and everything was once more going along nicely.
Rumil and Orophin were back on active duty, but not allowed to leave each other’s presence. And when they weren’t working Rielle always made sure Orophin had company. She carried Celeborn’s instructions out to the letter, never giving Orophin the chance to leave, should he still want it. Looking after the two younger brothers took a lot of her time, but she did not care, not now that Haldir was always near Celeborn.
And Rumil and Orophin did not mind her fussing over them. Even though they muttered every time she came to check on them or to bring them food or whatever having Rielle look after them made them feel secure. It reminded them of their childhood, when their parents were still alive. They did not check on Haldir as often as they did in the beginning.
At first Haldir had silently thanked his brothers for visiting him regularly, but now that more time had passed he realised he began to see it as an intrusion. And there was no reason for them to check; he had not slipped once. He prided himself on it every day. And as time went by he felt more and more at ease in Celeborn’s presence.
The same could be said for Celeborn. He too enjoyed spending his days with Haldir and he greatly appreciated the guardians presence. He pitied the fact he had two beds in his bedroom. A remainder of Galadriel. The last years they had spend together they had slept separately. He found himself thinking on ways to break the second bed more and more. It was getting worse as time went by.
Today Celeborn could not concentrate on his work and he decided to have a chat with Haldir. He knew guarguardian would be in his room, because even though Haldir had been allowed to walk again, provided he stayed inside – his leg would not yet handle longer walks –, he never did but stayed within the room. Haldir had no reason to leave the room. He was at ease and completely comfortable there.
He slept in every morning, waking only when Celeborn rose and got to work. Through his eye lashes he watched Celeborn get dressed and admired the beauty he saw. Always he would fall asleep again, dreaming of Celeborn. And when next Haldir awakes he always makes his way to the bathroom. It was so luxuries and beautiful Haldir couldn’t resist temptation and bathed daily.
When stretched out in the tub the ceiling resembles the forest. All kinds of craftsmen had worked close together, getting all the details right, making sure everything fitted together. Hidden pouches spread a lovely aroma through the room and the tub itself was more a swimming pool than a bathing tub.
Haldir indulged himself here daily. Once his leg was healed he would have to leave, so he took the most of what he had while he still had the chance. Even though Celeborn had said he could come bathe here whenever he wanted Haldir doubted he would ever see it again once he left these rooms.
His mind drifted away and he started singing. He did not know Celeborn was already coming his way or he would not have picked the song he did. But now his lyrical voice filled the room and his song reached the ears of the approaching Celeborn.
When he had opened the door of his room the first tunes of Haldir’s song emanated from the bathing room and softly Celeborn opened the door to listen. He stood still while he admired Haldir’s beauty and let his ears be caressed by the honeyed voice.

When Haldir saw Celeborn standing in the doorway he stopped and was highly embarrassed. How could he have let himself go like this. He should have been more careful.
Celeborn approached the embarrassed guardian. “Please do not stop on my account. You have such a lovely voice. And that’s a song to be heard, Haldir.”
“I’d rather not. If you give me second I’ll be out and you can..” He did not get a change to finish his sentence. Celeborn interrupter. “There’s no need for you to get out. Although the water does look enticing. Would you mind if I joined you?”
Celeborn had not entered to join Haldir in his bath, but hearing this song had made him jealous. Haldir had always been his shadow and now he learned Haldir was in love. Knowing that one day his shadow might be gone brought tears to his eyes, but he forced them back. While Haldir had song Celeborn had devised a plan to find out who it was and, more importantly, how far the relationship was.
Haldir inclined his head in agreement and kept his gaze fixed on the water as Celeborn undressed.
“It’s a lovely song Haldir, you should sing it more often.”
“I’d rather not.”
“Oh, that’s a shame. It’s one of your own, I take it?”
“Yes” Haldir had no idea why Celeborn was asking these questions but he also saw no harm in erinering.
Celeborn was now completely naked and joined Haldir in the tub. He waded over to Haldir. “Whoever you wrote it for is a very fortunate elf.”
Haldir looked up just as Celeborn lowered himself next to him. For a mere second their eyes met. Desire was visible in Celeborn’s but Haldir brought it down to wishful thinking. So often he wished for those eyes to look at him as they had just now. And as things went on Haldir slowly started wondering if he wasn’t asleep and this merely a dream.
“Why…why would you say that, my lord?”
“Celeborn, how many times do I have to tell you? And why wouldn’t I?”
Haldir shrugged his shoulders. He really didn’t know what to do or say. Celeborn raised his hand from the water and gently touched Haldir’s cheek. “Just don’t let her break your heart. Taitas, harmas ar umleryëas.”
Hearing these words made Haldir lock eyes with Celeborn. “No woman holds my heart. And I am following your advice daily, my lord. I mean, Celeborn.”
“Good, but tell me: who is it then that holds your heart. There aren’t that many males left here in Lorien so I should know him.”
But Haldir remained silent. How could he tell Celeborn who holds his heart? Many nights he had dreamed a conversation similar to this one. Every time he had ended up in Celeborn’s arms, but he would not risk it now, not in reality.
“Aiya Haldir, do not tell me this is an unrequited love.” Celeborn saw lone tears flow down Haldir’s cheeks as the guardian lowered his head. ‘Ai, it is. I would love to break the spine of the one who breaks your heart.’ Out loud he said: “I am sorry Haldir, I did not mean for my questions to bring you anything but joy.”
For a while the both were silent.
Suddenly Celeborn laughed. “Haldir, I have an official declaration to make”
That brought Haldir’s head back up. ‘now what is he up too?’
“I am renaming this bathtub to ‘the pool of unshed tears’.” Celeborn was pleased his little ploy to make Haldir laugh worked. Clear pearly laughter erupted next to him. “That’s better, now lean back, relax and enjoy the laziness.”
Celeborn hardly gave Haldir time to obey for he suddenly pulled Haldir back and to his chest. He felt how Haldir tensed, like he had so often. Every time he touched him without warning. But now Celeborn understood.
But that wasn’t all the lord of Lorien understood. He had in that moment realised he had fallen in love with Haldir. A love that could not be. He would do anything to help Haldir get his beloved, he knew that, but the thought of someone else holding -his- Haldir set his face grim. He did not want to share. But he had too.
Tomorrow, Celeborn decided, he would seek out Rumil and Orophin. They would know who it wast hat had so shamelessly stolen Haldir’s heart. And then he would make things alright. There would be a wedding soon.

Note on Haldir’s song:
It is my translation of ‘You owe me nothing in return’ by Alanis Morissette. Here are the lyrics:
I’ll give you countless amounts of outright acceptance if you want it
I will give you encouragement to choose the path that you want if you need it
You can speak of anger and doubts your fears and freak outs and I’ll hold it
You can share your so-called shame-filled accounts of times in your life and I won’t judge it
And there are no strings attached
You owe me nothing for giving the love that I give
You owe me nothing for caring the way that I have
I give you thanks for receiving it’s my privilege
And you owe me nothing in return
Translations:
Taitas, harmas ar umleryëas. Prolong it, treasure it and don’t let go.
Taita- to prolong
Harma- to treasure (I ‘invented’ it from the noun harma, meaning treasure.)
Lerya- to let go
Um- is the denial verb (do not, not be)
~s it.
I am not going to add how the translation of ‘You owe me nothing in return’ went. That would add a lot more pages and I don’t know if everybody would appreciate it. If you do wish to know just let me know.
But please bear in mind that the translation is not literal. I had to change some words to make it work and sometimes swift some words around as well. Just in case you were thinking of using it.
