The Sweet Sound of Music

CHAPTER 1

“Rain…again” Glorfindel muttered as he dashed from the barracks to the main house. He was beginning to think that the weather went wild every time Elrond left the valley. ‘It’s that damn ring.’ He thought.

Taking two steps at a time he pushed through the main doors and stopped.
“Really Captain,” A dark haired elf stated. “Could you not use the side entrance like a considerate person would?”

“Your forgiveness Lord Councilor but it is raining and I aimed for the nearest entrance.” Glorfindel said with a cock smile.

Erestor glared at the disheveled elf. “The rain already drenched you, what difference would it make to go twenty feet to the right? Now I must get this dried up before someone slips. Kindly remove that dripping cloak and hang it over there.” He pointed to a coat rack situated near a small hearth. “Then do tidy up a bit before you come to the library. You can not avoid the inevitable; I will win the chess game no matter how long you drag it out.” With that the counselor turned in a swirl of dark robes and walked purposefully down the hall.

Knowing that Erestor had a point, he quickly complied. Once his cloak hung by the fire to dry, Glorfindel headed to his rooms to ‘tidy up a bit’ before settling in for an evening of humiliation. He was not a bad chess player; the principals were much like planning any attack. Unfortunately, Erestor was better. Nonetheless, he would endure for the sheer pleasure of spending the evening with the beautiful councilor.

An hour later found both elves seated in front of the fire in the Library. Erestor wore a smug grin as his opponent’s hand hovered over one piece and then another. Getting up the raved hair elf poured a glass of wine and handed it to Glorfindel. Without looking up the Golden Lord reached for the glass.

“Ahh haa! Check!” He said triumphantly.

Erestor quietly took his seat and then proceeded to take Glorfindel’s offending piece. “Nice try meldir.” Erestor chuckled as Glorfindel slumped back into his chair. Though he would never admit it, the warrior posed more of a challenge than even Elrond…he was also better looking…although he would never admit that either.

A servant entered. “My Lord Erestor, there is a traveler here seeking shelter.”
“Thank you. I will be there presently.” Turning to his friend, “Well, saved once again. Maybe you’ll be ready for you next move when I return.” He smirked

Glorfindel returned the smirk. “Not likely since I am going with you.”

This stopped Erestor in his tracks. He turned to look at the Elda with questioning eyes.

“It is late. We do not know who this visitor is. I will not allow you to greet him in the receiving room alone.”

The dark elf let out an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes. “Oh very well.” He turned again before stopping. Glorfindel needed his quick reflexes to avoid a collision. “What?”

“Bring a glass of wine. I’m sure our guest is chilled from the rain.” Glorfindel grabbed a glass and headed after the elf. As they walked, Erestor thought on his personal escort. ‘He truly is a noble elf,’ he thought. He would not say it aloud, but he was grateful for the company. Usually he and Elrond greeted guests, together. ‘Of course’ he mused, ‘he would do this for anyone…’ That caused his smile to falter.

Upon entering the room, they saw a very soaked hooded figure standing at the fire.
Moving forward Erestor gave the greeting. “Welcome to Imladris. I am told you wish to take shelter here. You are most welcome but might we first know who you are?”

The elf tuned and lowered his hood. Erestor stared at an elf that rivaled Glorfindel in beauty and light; which is saying a lot since he only had eyes for the golden one. The pause seemed to last a lifetime. Shattering glass behind him that brought Erestor back to the present.
