**************

Elrohir knelt by the granite marker, heedless of his knees sinking into the soft ground. He stared unmoving at the polished stone, the shine of it so bright he could see his reflection in the dark depths.

//My reflection… or his?// The thought passed through his mind almost before he was aware of it. It could so easily be Elladan looking back at him, just as he always had during their shared lives.

His body shook with the force of his grief and he rested his head against the marker, as if the contact could bring him closer to his lost brother. Not for the first time, he contemplated leaving this world behind and seeking his twin in the Grey Halls.

“Why?” His words were a whisper, barely audible above the wind. “You were supposed to be with me always…” How often had he asked that question these past weeks? Not a day went by when they were not foremost in his mind, yet the answer never came. Perhaps it never would.

“No one knows why those we love are taken, only that it is a cruelty we must bear as well as we can.” Strong arms wrapped around Elrohir from behind, pulling him slightly away from the tombstone.

Elrohir leaned back into the comforting embrace, his head resting on the green-clad chest. “I do not know how to be without him,” he said softly.

“Nor I, the years before we met seem as though they were another life. Yet somehow we must learn to get by and to find strength in each other until we meet again.” Legolas’ words were soft, his own sorrow clear within them. “This parting is not forever, though it seems it now.”

There should have been comfort in Legolas’ words; however, Elrohir found only a deeper heartache and agonising uncertainty. “We cannot be sure… Legolas…” Elrohir turned in the Prince’s arms, staring up at his lover with eyes that betrayed every one of his feelings. “He never made his final choice, never chose which path to take. Elladan might be lost to me forever… like my father and Elros.”

The thought was painful indeed and for a moment, Legolas had no reply. The idea that he might never be reunited with Elladan was enough to render him speechless and unable to give comfort to Elrohir. He closed his eyes, just holding the younger twin until, quite unexpectedly, he realised he did have the answer.

“You are wrong,” he said, smiling softly. “He did make his decision. Elladan chose to love you – to love us. We made our promises to each other, to be as one and there is no force in this world or the next that would make him break that oath. He will return to us, Elrohir, of that I am certain.” He pulled Elrohir around in his arms and kissed him softly. “And until that day comes, we have each other and our memories to see us through.”
