Summary: The twins are separated for the first time in their lives
It is dark. It is not just the lack of light, that I am used to, but the loneliness, the all encompassing nothingness that surrounds me.
It was not always like this. For as long as I can remember he has been there with me. We touched and comforted each other in the darkness, shared all that swirled around us. He was my anchor in a world I did not know, me a safe port in a world he did not understand.
For so long. We thought this was how it would always be. Always together, always with each other, more one than two. I loved him before I knew what love was.
Now there is nothing but darkness, and he is gone. I can hear far off the cries I never thought to hear. He calls to me but I do not know where it is he has gone. Do not know who took him from me. Still he cries, soul scraping screams and I know I can wait no longer. I must find him. I stumble through the darkness, feel hands on me for the first time that are not his, squint at the sudden light that assails my eyes, disorientated after the long night. I scream as I am pulled, struggling against the firm hold, but it is no use, the hands hold me fast.
Eyes open I search for him, desperate to be away from unwanted touches, seeking what I had known all my life. I see him and struggle once more, I reach out my hands to him as I see him raise his arms to me. Then blessedly I am placed beside him and he smiles. Our fingers trace over each other’s cheek to reassure ourselves that all is well. He takes hold of my hand and touches it to his lips, his eyes shining.
Around us I hear sounds that are unfamiliar, voices that are reminiscent of what we have heard before, but more distinct. He tilts his head and I follow his gaze.
A dark haired being stands over us. A hand brushes across both our cheeks, a wet drop lands on my arm.
“Welcome,” I hear this being say, “welcome to the world little ones.”
He kisses him on the brow and whispers his name, then turns grey eyes to me. As I am drawn into slumber I hear one word.
My name. Elrohir.
