Chapter One

Elijah's eyes fluttered open.

Where am I? was the first thought that filtered through his daze.

His head felt like it had been repeatedly run over by a several tonne truck. Elijah tried to sit up, to get a better view of his surroundings, but quickly lay back down again as it made his head spin and the for the truck to run over his head a few more times for good measure. From his lying position in the gloom, Elijah guessed it was near dawn judging by the small hint of orange glowing on the fraction of the horizon he could see out of the window to his right, and from the light of the dull glow Elijah could see other beds around him, all vacant, and everything white and dazzlingly clean, even in the half-light. Elijah again tried to sit up to see if any staff were in the hospital ward, it was deserted. Exhaustion claimed him and he moved into a natural sleep.

Again Elijah's eyes fluttered open to be greeted by the harsh glare of natural sunlight. The clock on the opposite wall showed 10:15am and a nurse was bustling beside a bed that had just been occupied and she seemed not to have noticed Elijah's return to consciousness. The occupant of the bed, wore a vacant expression as if he didn't really know why he was there, or who he was for that matter and was, at the moment, struggling against the nurses protests that he really should be lying in bed and that no, he wasn't going to be late for work. Elijah, feeling slightly better, slid himself in to the sitting position and began to watch the nurse repeatedly insisting that the man should lie down. Eventually the man gave up and reluctantly lay on the bed, folded his arms and pouted sulkily. The nurse then turned her attention onto the rest of her duties and that's when she noticed Elijah, sitting quite comfortably with his head still pounding. The nurse walked steadily towards him and, when within earshot, said

"Good morning Mr Wood, how are we feeling today?"

Elijah automatically answered "Fine. " though confusingly accompanied it with a shake of the head to which he immediately corrected himself.

"I have a very bad headache. "

The nurse just smiled sweetly and replied "I expect you would have, with that type of wound. "

Elijah looked politely puzzled but when the nurse didn't elaborate he asked in a small voice

"What happened to me? !. I can't seem to remember !..Anything! "

The nurse smiled politely again, courtesy at all times was the hospitals policy,

"All I know, sir, is that the emergency services operator received an anonymous 999 call that said someone had been attacked, that they needed an ambulance and that they would stay with you until the ambulance arrived. The ambulance crew said that when they arrived on the scene you were bleeding heavily from the head with no-one in sight. That was a good 2 weeks ago now ! "

Elijah looked even more confused.

"But I thought I hadn't been here that long ! " he replied quietly.

The nurse nodded slowly to herself as she checked his bedpan and made sure he was taking the correct medication then continued

"When you arrived you were in a bad way, you had to have an operation to break your skull into pieces to allow your brain to swell. We weren't able to break it quick enough. "

The nurse walked to the end of the bed and picked up Elijah's notes.

"It says here that you were diagnosed with temporary amnesia brought on by massive head trauma, which means you won't be able to remember much for a while "

The nurse suddenly, hurriedly replaced the notes and rushed through the double doors straight after the man that had previously occupied one on the beds.

Elijah placed a tentative hand on the back of his head and felt the soft dressing covering the wounds and whatever means the hospital had used to seal them. To his horror, Elijah realised that his once long, silky hair had been shaved off to provide better access for the surgeon. Elijah allowed his hand to slowly glide across his features, feeling out the imperfections and swellings on a face he thought he knew, but this one felt completely different. No flawless skin or straight nose, the face was now a mass of cuts that had ripped through perfect skin and swellings that had made the nose crooked. The small portion of himself he was sure he could remember, was different. Confused and frustrated, Elijah sank down in his pillows to think.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Time passed by with no thought for Elijah or the man now practically chained to the bed opposite his, furthest from both doors and windows. The only visitor Elijah received was the nurse with his medication and the midday meal. Around one €˜o' clock the same nurse again strode purposefully down the ward clutching a basketful of flowers, Elijah, intrigued by this new occurrence, abandoned his depressing thoughts to wonder at which lucky person would be receiving the flowers. The nurse stopped a few times to take inquiries as to who the flowers were for and all Elijah could make out was that she kept gesturing to further up the ward towards him. Elijah didn't think the flowers were for him, he didn't even think anybody knew he had been admitted to hospital, so it came as quite a shock when the nurse placed the flowers onto his bedside table and retrieved the card she held between her teeth and gave it too him, then the nurse swept out of the room. Elijah glanced at the flowers, then at the card gathered on his palm, checking the flowers were actually for him. He reached for his black-rimmed glasses and read the note inside the card, one word jumped out at him. It looked familiar, he was sure he knew it, or at least did know it.

"Dominic !. "

Elijah tasted the word as it tumbled from his lips in a low, husky whisper. Recognition immediately put name to face, Elijah feeling joy in a way only hearing his best-friends name could procure. Elijah smiled serenely to himself, then blushed when he realised that, from the peak in the sheets, something else was happy to hear the name. Elijah, puzzled about his bodily reaction to his friends name, put it down to his brain just doing random checks as it recovered.

I'm straight

thought the majority of Elijah brain and he repeated it to himself over and over again to try and still the stirring under the sheets, but a small truthful voice laden with sarcasm, was not making the job any easier.

Yeah,

It whispered

as straight as a round-a-bout!

These two thoughts battled each other within his mind until Elijah became light-headed, then queasy, then unconscious.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Elijah awoke abruptly, high manic laughter still ringing in his ears, cold sweat beading on his fore-head, a warm hand brushing away the liquid. Light swam before his eyes and the owner of the hand with a kindly face contorted with anguish came into focus, before his eyes rolled back, showing white, then the convulsions began.

"He's going into shock! " were the last words Elijah heard, spoken by a deep male voice.

Elijah was in a warm, flowing river, slowly floating through a tunnel, desperately seeking the light. It would have been perfect if it wasn't for the sharp metallic hands pushing at his bare chest, forcing him back into life. Elijah resisted against the hands for a while, then gave in, to be pushed back to a warm bed and the hand, again, caressing his sweat laden brow.

The face again swam into focus as did several others in green clothing,

Doctors thought Elijah as sleep, once again, claimed him.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Elijah felt his hand clasped within two others, soft lips tracing whispered words over the back of his hand, as the owner silently hoped. Sound accompanied sensation but took longer to penetrate Elijah's groggy tired state, when it finally did, Elijah wrenched his hand from the grasp along with the drip that had, until recently, been taped to a vein.

"JESUS!! "

The person jumped back with shock at the sudden movement as blood sprayed from Elijah's arm, narrowly missing the visitor and the nurse who had been called to reattach the drip. Elijah finally managed to prise open his eyes to gaze upon the face he knew like his own. Elijah smiled sheepishly at the shocked look on the visitors face, which promptly turned into a broad smile.

"Hi, Dom. "

Elijah grinned when the nurse left, muttering about twitchy patients.

"How have you been? " Elijah continued when Dominic just stood rigid with surprise.

"So you remember me then, Lij? The doctor said you had temporary amnesia !wouldn't remember me ! "

Dominic looked awkwardly at the floor, blushing, shifting his hands away from Elijah's. Elijah cast a concerned look over Dominic, thinking

How can he be embarrassed? There's nothing wrong with holding your friends hand or drying their face when they're in need, is there?

but the trouble was, Elijah didn't have the answer to that question. He couldn't even remember the meaning of homosexual, never mind knowing everyone else's views on it. The only answer Elijah had was that it felt right and that was all he needed to proceed, he just needed the right time, but the ultimate question was, what would Dominic think?

The silence stretched out for an age, so Elijah broke it.

"I remember quite a bit about our recent history, but I can't remember anything about !well !anything! "

Dom continued to stare at his feet, the blush slowly ebbing from his cheeks.

"Cheer up, Dom! What's the matter? ! !Cat got your tongue? " Elijah continued playfully, stifling a yawn.

Finally, Dominic looked up, to gaze into his friends deep, sea blue eyes and saw the vulnerability there, the fear and pain masked by humour for Dominic's sake, his sake. Dominic's face split into a genuine smile, full of warmth and welcome, to which Elijah extended his arms, inviting an embrace which was immediately accepted. Dominic held Elijah close, smelling the disinfectant from a wound behind his ear, hearing a soft whimper as Elijah's aching muscles gave up the struggle to keep his arms aloft, making his beaten and fragile body tremble, Elijah allowing himself to be held against Dominic's warm chest and comforted in his arms.

As Dominic moved to place Elijah properly in bed, a soft and feeble tug on his shirt told him Elijah wished the embrace to continue and Dominic needed no encouragement, only slightly embarrassed about his growing erection for his friend,

But what will Elijah think, if I do? Plus he's injured and confused! He’ll probably regret it !

was a thought that swirled in his mind, as he rested his chin atop of Elijah's head, Elijah's sore cheek pressed on his chest and small hands tightly gripping his shirt reminding him, to hold him close and never let go.
