**************
“You are not angry with me.” The voice was cool, but it held a hint of amazement at this realisation.
“Nay, my Lord – I am not.”
The tall, dark figure shook his head.
“Interesting - Do you feel anything at all? I imagine you must,” he queried, rather enjoying the enigma. Surprises were so rare and he wished to make the most out of this one.
“Indeed,” came the reply. “I feel much. I am saddened at his leaving and for my loss. Yet at the same time I am proud and wish him only the best. Though my heart aches terribly to be so alone, I know it was the right choice – he was the right choice.”
“You are wise – wiser than I had thought, for which I must apologise. However, the heart is a strange thing. What is it that keeps your from despair?”
In the semi-darkness, a pale face smiled.
“We believe that we may meet again in a time to come, and perhaps we shall find somewhere a land where can live together and both be content. Be it in the Hither Lands or the Blessed Realm, it matters not. That, my Lord, is what keeps me from despair.”
A laugh greeted this reply, a strange, hollow sound that seemed to echo in the emptiness.
“Such hope in one so fallen, it is quite intriguing. Keep your hope, fair one, and perhaps Eru will one day see fit to make real your wish. Farewell.”
Abruptly and with barely a thought he was gone, such being the way of Námo, Lord of the dead.
Ecthelion paid him no heed, staring into the mists as he thought upon his reborn lover, with whom he would eternally hope to be reunited.
