Merry frowned as he gently spread a healing salve over the scratches on Legolas’ back, listening as Pippin tried to soothe the trembling elf. Merry didn’t know why the younger hobbit bothered with false promises, telling the elf that it would all be over soon, that Gandalf or Aragorn would arrive soon and rescue them. It just made the elf more depressed, more frightened, when they didn’t come with swords raised to free them from this hell.
Legolas whimpered and buried his head in his pillow, causing Merry to pull free from his thoughts and realize he had pressed harder than necessary on a large bruise. “I’m sorry, Legolas,” he said softly, not wanting his friend to panic. “I was distracted.”
Pippin looked up at him and began stroking Legolas’ hair, an action that had always calmed the now-skittish elf. “What were you thinking about, Merry?”
Merry frowned and shook his head, gesturing towards Legolas. His message was clear, he didn’t think they should talk about this in front of Legolas. ‘It’s strange,’ Merry thought, ‘when this all started, it was Legolas who protected us, took care of us.’ He sighed, gazing sadly at the broken creature lying on the bed. ‘Now we take care of him.’
Merry was once again pulled from his thoughts by sounds coming from the elf. Thinking he was hurting him again, he immediately stopped what he was doing, which was cleaning a rather deep wound. He glanced quickly at Pippin, who was now softly singing a Shire lullaby. Withouoppiopping his song, Pippin met his gaze and gestured at the now crying elf.
Merry looked away and barely stopped himself from growling, not wanting to scare Legolas. ‘How could you do this to him?!’ he mentally yelled at their captors, almost wishing they could hear him, ‘He protected you! He was your friend.’
“Merry?”
The older hobbit looked up at his cousin’s quiet whisper, he hadn’t noticed Pippin had stopped singing. “Yes?” he whispered, although he didn’t know why. “What is it?”
Pippin smiled slightly and pointed at Legolas. “I think he’s asleep.”
Merry glanced quickly at the elf’s face, seeing the closed eyes and hearing even breathing. “I think you’re right,” he said, moving off the bed so he could pull the blanket over the naked form.
After Legolas was covered, he crawled back onto the bed and snuggled under the blanket on the left side of Legolas, watching as Pippin did the same on the right side. They each put an arm around the elf’s waist, being careful to avoid any injuries. They surrounded Legolas, giving the illusion of protection. ‘That’s exactly what it is,’ Merry thought, before surrendering to sleep, ‘An illusion.’
