Summary: Glorfindel overhears a conversation about Erestor. Or is it?
Author's Note: For our friend, DarkDreamer.
Glorfindel felt useless. All he could do was stand there and hold the hair away from Erestor's face as he emptied his breakfast into the basin. He didn't know what to say to his friend. But he wished he had the right to pull him into his arms and hold him. Long had he been in love with Erestor and long had he kept this love hidden. The only glimpses he allowed to emerge were at times like this were he took tender care of his friend.
When the slender elf finally stopped heaving, Glorfindel poured him a cool glass of water then held the glass to Erestor's lips, fearing that the advisor would drop it, his limbs were trembling so violently. "Erestor, dear friend, you may gripe all you like, but I am taking you to the healing wing," he announced, then slipped his arm beneath Erestor's knees and the other behind his back, before lifting the elf of his heart and heading from the room.
Erestor was too weak and too ill to give more protest than a weak moan and snuggle deeper into the strong arms he had so longed for. His head was pounding but at least his stomach had stopped revolting. All he could think of was that the fish he had eaten for lunch had tasted off.
Glorfindel was worried. Elves shouldn't get sick, and his friend definitely was. Arriving at the healing wing, he was relieved to find Elrond there. "Elrond, please. . . something is wrong with Erestor. He has been vomiting."
Elrond motioned to Glorfindel to take Erestor to a private room and followed the two elves inside. Glorfindel laid his precious burden on the bed and gave Elrond a worried look.
Elrond turned to Glorfindel. "I am sorry my friend, but you will need to leave the room. I know you are worried, but it will be easier for us to check him over with you out of the room. I promise I will personally let you know what is wrong with him." Elrond then took his friend's arm and lead him to the door, gently shoving him out. He then turned to Erestor and began asking him questions. Finally, he reached the same conclusion his advisor had. "The fish, most likely. I will send someone to ask the servers about who ate it so that we can know how many to watch out for." He fixed a potion in a glass. "Here, drink this. It will ease your stomach." He helped Erestor rise up, holding the glass at his lips as he drank the vile brew. "Now, get some rest and I will be back in an hour to check on you." Elrond settled Erestor back on the bed and left the room.
Glorfindel was pacing outside the room when two elves exited and walked past him, nodding at the golden lord, but keeping up their conversation.
“That poor, poor, elf….so sick….all that vomiting. It is a pity that being with child causes such misery when it should be a joyous time.” The healer’s assistant shook his head.
“Indeed. What a horrible thing to have to go through,” the second elf added.
Glorfindel stood horror stricken. Erestor was with child? It was not unusual for some male elves to bear children, but Erestor had no lover, did he? Glorfindel sat heavily on a bench against the wall and put his head in his hands. If Erestor was with child, he had to have a lover. He had missed his chance with his beautiful friend.
Elrond walked up behind Glorfindel and looked down at his friend in concern. "Glorfindel? Are you all right? I hope you did not eat the fish at lunch as well.” He sat next to the tall, blond warrior and placed a cool hand on his forehead.
Glorfindel looked down at Elrond and simply shook his head. "I will never be all right again." Suddenly, he jumped to his feet and rushed outside, running into the trees, needing to escape with his misery.
Glorfindel roamed the woods, paying no attention to where he was going, simply lost in his despair over losing any chance with the one elf he would ever love. Try as he might, he could not recall Erestor ever having been with another elf. Was it possible that his friend had had a brief affair with a visiting elf? Someone from Lorien or Mirkwood perhaps? Suddenly even more shocked, he realized that Erestor’s lover might not even be in Imladris and his friend would have to bear this pregnancy alone. No, not alone. He would have Glorfindel to support him.
Filled with resolve, Glorfindel ran back to the healing wing. Rushing into Erestor's room without knocking, Glorfindel dropped to his knees, taking Erestor's hand in his own. "Oh, my dear friend. I have heard about your condition and though it frightens me, the thought of you bearing this burden alone frightens me more. I would marry you and share it with you, both the joys and sorrows, unless you tell me who the babe's father is and send me away."
"Glorfindel?" Erestor squeaked. "Whatever are you speaking of?" He brought a trembling hand to his chest. "What babe? My condition?" He looked at Glorfindel as if he had grown horns. "Have you been smoking that weed from the Shire again?"
“It is all right, my friend. I know. You do not have to hide it from me. I heard two of the assistants talking as they left. I know you are with child. If the babe’s father will not claim his right and stand beside you, then I will. I will love you and the child as my own.”
Erestor gaped at Glorfindel, his mouth open and his eyes wide. He was reeling from the emotions he saw in his dear friend's eyes. But then suddenly Glorfindel's words actually sank in and he began to chuckle, then laugh until he was laying on the bed, clutching his belly, and gasping for air as tears streamed down his cheeks. After long moments, he was finally able to get his mirth under control and he sat up, pulling Glorfindel up from the floor and bringing the strong warrior’s hand to his lips. "Oh sweetheart," he whispered, still hiccupping with laughter as he pressed a soft kiss to the palm. "I only have a bad case of food poisoning." He cradled the hand to his cheek. "But I will marry you if you truly wish it." Erestor ducked his head then, a scarlet blush on his cheeks as he realized what had just slipped out of his mouth.
“You are not with child? Food poisoning?” Glorfindel suddenly felt the urge to swallow the lump in his throat as his hand tingled from Erestor’s kiss. “Erestor….you called me sweetheart.” He lifted his friend’s chin with his fingers. “You will marry me?”
Erestor shyly nodded. “If you meant it. I love you Glorfindel. I will always love you.”
Glorfindel sat as if made of stone for about two seconds before his arms came up around Erestor's slim form and crushed him to his chest. He brushed their mouths together in a short, sweet kiss, then pulled back to look into Erestor's eyes. "I have loved you since the day I stepped into Imladris and saw you standing next to Elrond, the sun glinting blue off your raven tresses, the green of your eyes like the new grass that was just peeking through the ground. That we have become friends has been both a blessing and a curse to me. I have been blessed that we spent so much time together, but cursed for it has never been enough. I want to see your sweet face first thing when I wake and last thing when I sleep. I mean it with all my heart. Marry me, my love.”
Erestor gently cupped Glorfindel’s face in his hands and slowly lowered his mouth to his new lover’s. His lips hovering just above Glorfindel’s, he whispered, “Yes, I will marry you, beloved. With all my heart I will marry you.” He captured Glorfindel’s lips in a searing kiss that spoke of all the love in his heart.
Glorfindel’s toes curls and butterflies jumped in his stomach when Erestor kissed him. Taking control of the kiss and deepening it, he held Erestor closer as he felt long fingers weave through his hair.
When the kiss finally ended, Erestor panted and rested his head on Glorfindel’s shoulder. “Sweetheart? Ummm….there is something I need to tell you.”
“What is it, my love? You can tell me anything, just as long as you love me and promise to marry me.”
“Glorfindel, my love, do you like elflings? Lots of little elflings?”
Glorfindel lifted Erestor’s head from his shoulder and looked into his eyes. “Yes, love. You know I do. Erestor….are you telling me…..?”
“Yes, my love. I will marry you and bear you many strong elflings.”
Elrond burst into Erestor’s room at the sound of the commotion within, only to find Glorfindel holding his chief councilor in his arms and twirling him around the room as both elves laughed joyously.
