Chapter One: A Battle

Rain fell from the blackened sky.

Eomer of Rohan took a deep breath and readied himself for the next assault. Long had he been fighting with this soldier of Gondor, and neither of them yet had fallen. Eomer was not surprised, for when he first laid eyes on the soldier he knew that here was one whom no Rider of the Mark would outmatch in battle. Eomer was tired, and again he felt the burden of his uncle’s alliance.

Then the man of Gondor spoke. “Why did you ally yourself with the Ranger?!”

And Eomer found that he could give no answer but that of a soldier: “I follow my King’s command.”

The Gondorian looked away for moment, then nodded. With the winged helmet covering the man’s head, Eomer could barely make out his profile. The soldier took
up his sword, and Eomer did the same. They came together in a clash of steel, and Eomer thought once again that soon he would fall to this soldier; and it would be a
worthy death.

Then he heard a cry, and the Gondorian soldier fell away into the mud - but not by Eomer’s hand, for the man had been struck by a dart. A Southron galloped past,
paying no heed to his cheap victory. Eomer saw the fallen soldier struggle weakly to get back up, and instinctively he made a move to help him. Suddenly another horseman bearing the mark of Dol Amroth violently splashed through the mud, driving Eomer off. The rider hoisted the Gondorian onto the horse and bore him away towards the city.

Left standing amongst the ruins of Osgiliath, Eomer watched them disappear into the mist.
