An Invitation
Legolas folded the parchment quickly as the sound of footsteps drew nearer, tossing it back onto the disheveled pile of books and papers that covered the desk. Seconds later, the doors opened. Thraduil’s robe swept the marble floor as he entered his study.
“Legolas…” said the king, startled by his son’s presence. “What brings you here this morning, ionen?”(my son)
“I wanted to ask you if you will need me today. If not, I would like to go out riding with some friends,” said Legolas, standing up from his father’s ornate chair.
“You may go.”
Legolas smiled. “Thank you, Adar.” (father)
The prince turned to leave, but hesitated as he was about to leave the study. Thranduil must have noticed this. “Is there anything else you wish to speak about?”
“Aye,” said Legolas. “I heard there is going to be a festival in ‘Lorien this summer. Are we going?”
A quick glance at his desk and Thranduil knew that his son had read the invitation. He suppressed the urge to reprimand his son for rummaging through his things. “I am”
Worry marred the young prince’s face. “b..but… I have always dreamed of seeing the Golden Wood. Can I not go with you?”
“Nay, Legolas. Someone needs to look after things while I am gone.”
“But we have both left Greenwood before,” Legolas protested. When he received no answer he tried another approach. “It says the festival will last for six weeks… perhaps I can go when you return.”
Thranduil sighed, obviously troubled by some inner conflict. “Ion, you may travel to the Golden Wood in winter, when it is so beautiful. But I will not allow you to take part in this festival.”
“Why not?”
“You are too young.”
“But I am past my majority,” said Legolas, though he sounded like a mere Elfling.
“I know. Yet you are still too innocent.”
Legolas was at a loss for words. He knew not what his father meant, but he had a feeling that if he were to ask, he would only prove the king correct.
“You have never had a lover. Am I right, Legolas?” The prince nodded. “Then you would be shocked by what you would see there,” Thranduil explained. “More importantly, one as innocent and naïve as you are is bound to go there looking for love, only to return with a broken heart.”
Legolas’ expression became more confused, if that was possible. “Is it wrong to attend a festival celebrating love, in search of love?”
“Love comes in many forms, ionen. It would be too much for you to handle, I fear.” Looking at his son’s disappointed face, the king frowned. “Do not despair, Legolas. By the time the next Summer of Love comes around you will be ready.”
“In 500 years!” cried Legolas!
Thranduil raised a hand silencing the young Elf. “We will speak no more of this matter. If you intend on going riding, now is the time. It is getting late.”
“Very well,” said Legolas with a sigh. He left his father’s study without another word. ‘Why must he always be so over-protective,’ he thought as he choked back tears. He could not explain it, but he felt it in his heart that he had to go to ‘Lorien this summer.
