A triangle affair

Pairings: Elrond/Galadriel/Celeborn; Celeborn/Haldir/Galadriel (mentioned); Haldir/Erestor/Legolas; Legolas/Haldir.
Summary: Why Haldir came to die and how he finds happiness in Valinor.

Part one

Celeborn looked out over the dancing elves and his heart contracted when he saw his lover’s sad eyes. He grimaced. His lover of old. Haldir had left him.

“You have the power to make him smile again.”
Celeborn twirled round and his eyes were wide with shock, staring at Galadriel’s knowing eyes; eyes that now also carried a small amount of hatred. “Why are you making a mess of things, Celeborn?”
The ruler glared at her. “Why of all people do you ask me that? I cannot give him what he wants, what he deserves. And may I remind you that -he- left.”
Galadriel cocked her head. “Because you forced him to. Not even I would be able to stand you like that. You locked him out; -you- drove him away.” She shook her head. “I do not understand you at all.”
Celeborn’s glare intensified. “You are my wife and I love you.”
She nodded. “And you also know I am secure enough in your love for me to share you with him.”

She approached him. “Awithron addressed me today. He asked me if you were preoccupied. He said your mind wanders off constantly and you are getting more and more grumpy and edgy as time goes by.” Her eyes turned determined. “Go to him!”
Celeborn shook his head. “Nay! I cannot set us up for more heartache. I cannot wed him as I am bound to you.”
She shook her head. “He does not want a wedding. But you do!”
He shook his head and turned, feeling empty when he didn’t see Haldir. He heard Galadriel’s growl behind him as she left. /Fine, if you won’t do anything, I will./

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rumil shook his head and locked eyes with Orophin. “Something’s wrong with our brother. But what?”
Orophin shook his head. “Do you think there is some truth to the rumour after all?”
Rumil shook his head. “Nay. Haldir would have told us.” He sighed. “We have to wake him soon. It’s our turn at the borders.”
They jumped up when the door opened but their alarmed postures relaxed when they saw their lady.
Galadriel smiled. “Rumil. Orophin. Could you already leave? I have to talk to Haldir in private. There are some things about this shift I need to inform him on.”
They nodded and gathered their stuff.
Rumil wiggled his eyes and Orophin nodded. Together they flipped Haldir’s mattress over, giving their brother a rather rough waking process.
Rumil dashed off and Orophin threw his growling brother a wet towel. “Lady Galadriel is here for you. See you at the border.” He hastily followed his brother out the door.
Haldir groggily entered the living room and was stunned to see Galadriel sitting on their couch, patiently waiting.
She smiled warmly at him. “Haldir.” Her voice was just as warm and friendly as always.
He lowered his eyes, not wanting her to see his pain. He gasped when he felt her spirit touch his own, caressing it as she hadn’t done for months. “I feel and share your pain, Haldir. You must give him time. He’s too stubborn for his own good.”
She stood and embraced him. “I shall always be there for you, Haldir.”
He smiled and sighed. “Do you really have to leave us when the war is over?”
She nodded. “Aye. I would not remain alive for long if I stayed. You do not have to miss me, Haldir.” She laughed when his eyes opened in shock and she shook her head. “Nay. I don’t mean you join me. But we can always contact each other, Haldir. And over time I will regain my strength and touch you again.”
He smiled. “I would like that.”
He sat down, resting his head on his knees. “I never thought I would fall in love with the both of you.”
She sat beside him and pulled him close, comforting him. “But it is a different love. Our love is spiritual while you and Celeborn are one on a different level.” She grinned. “I always loved watching you and it pains me to know I will not see it again.” She shrugged when he looked at her. “I need no mirror to tell me that, Haldir. We both know him.”
She stood and looked out over the trees. “Do you feel it, Haldir? The darkness closing in on our lands?”
He nodded. “Aye. But I also sense hope and strength. And love.”
She smiled. “Aye. So do I.” She turned to him. “During your watch the fellowship Elrond send away will reach our realm. Guide them here.”
He bowed his head and frowned. “Even the evil?”
She nodded. “Aye. They need to regain their strength and Elrond sensed confusing emotions from some of them. I would like to see for myself.”
Haldir nodded and reached for his gear. “I shall bring them myself.”
She smiled. “Legolas will be pleased to see his own kind again.”
She touched him. “Strengthen him, Haldir. He needs you more than he realises.”
Haldir blushed and almost dropped his bow. “He still has feelings for me then?”
Galadriel nodded. “Of course. No one can ever fall out of love with you.” Her eyes sparkled and she kissed his lips, a movement she hardly ever made. “I can know.”
Haldir sighed, strengthened by her love and care and he left the talan. `Thank you.`
`I love you too, Haldir.` /And I whish I had known what I know now. I could have spared you and Legolas the pain./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rumil and Orophin frowned but shrugged. They had no idea what had lifted their brother’s spirits but they were glad he was smiling once more and they were happy enough to pretend they hadn’t noticed his despair if that was what he wanted.

They locked eyes with him when they heard voices closing in. Haldir’s look was knowing and they realised Galadriel had informed him on their unexpected guests. They would follow Haldir’s lead, as always.

Their eyes sparkled with amusement when they heard the Dwarf enlighten the little ones on the forest’s witch.
Haldir shook his head and reached out. `She told me they are Hobbits. Our future depends on the two walking near Estel.`
Now Rumil sensed the strong evil and he looked at Haldir, already notching an arrow. But Haldir shook his head.

Instead the warden jumped down from the trees, his own bow drawn. The next moment he had the pleasure of having the Dwarf almost walk into the tip of his arrow. His eyes sparkled. “The Dwarf breaths so loud we could have shot him in the dark.”

He listened to Aragorn’s words and inwardly smiled. He had had no intentions of shocking them like this but he had felt angered and had wanted to get even with the Dwarf. “You bring great evil into our lands, Aragorn. I cannot let you pass.”
His eyes darted to the Hobbit, and he heard the voice inside his mind. /The one ring. Galadriel. How can I let that inside?/ But he knew he had to. Galadriel wanted them to.
He signalled for his brothers to lower their bows as he did the same. “The Lady Galadriel is expecting you. I shall escort you there myself.” He turned and marched away.

Aragorn instantly told the others to follow, keeping a close eye on Frodo. Legolas ran to catch up with Haldir and once more the ranger wondered what the history between them was.

“Haldir? You look strained.”
Haldir smiled, touched by his concern. “I am. These are dangerous times, as you have experienced yourself.” His eyes turned compassionate and locked with Legolas. He pulled him close. “Come, gwador. Allow yourself to relax and for my realm to soothe all your nerves.”
He could see the sorrow still residing in Legolas’ eyes and decided to make him smile. “What are they like? The Hobbits?” Legolas laughed and started telling tales to him, making him laugh as well.

They made camp for the night and Haldir was severely amused to see Legolas and Gimli take a long walk together and his surprise mounted when both came back unscarred. He smiled as he heard Legolas’ words. “Gimli. Haldir never meant harm. But you insulted his lady and he had to avenge that.”

Legolas smiled and approached Haldir. “Haldir, this is Gimli. You might not believe it but underneath all that muttering and bad manners lies a kind and warm soul.”
Haldir laughed and shook his head. “Aye, I do find that hard to believe, but I trust your instincts. Well met, Gimli, son of Gloin.” He smiled as Gimli’s eyes widened. “I am sorry for your loss. It’s never easy losing a loved one, but a relative…”
Legolas sat down and laughed. “Haldir is Galadriel and Celeborn’s confidant and knows much more than he lets on. And tomorrow we arrive in their city. I’ve missed it, Haldir.”
Haldir inclined his head at the hidden compliment for his own person. “We’ve missed you as well, Prince.” He smiled at Legolas. `Fear not. All will be well.`

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haldir’s mood had turned gloomy again and he was glad to have delivered the fellowship to the royal talan. He didn’t linger. It pained him to see them together, happy. She had what he wanted most and what was worse was his inability to hate her for he loved her too.
The day passed by without him even noticing it and he didn’t go to the party. He couldn’t pretend to care again.
“Haldir? Are you there?”
Haldir turned his head to the door, wondering what brought Legolas here. “Aye, I am.” The door opened and Legolas walked inside. “Why are you here, Prince? There’s a feast in your honour.”
Legolas shrugged. “They can carry on without me.” He walked closer. “I am worried about you, Haldir, and I am not the only one.” He sat down and placed his hand on Haldir’s leg. “Will you not share your troubles?”
Haldir shook his head. “I cannot, Legolas. Do not ask again.” He sighed and closed his eyes, forcing his tears to remain inside.
Legolas scooted closer. “You’ve grown harder, Haldir. Your eyes have always been open and filled with life, happiness and strength. When I see them now I see it broken. And it hurts to see it.”
Haldir smiled but didn’t open his eyes. Therefore he did not see Legolas’ tears as his own slipped through his lashes. “My heart demands I path I do not wish.” He yelped and opened his eyes when Legolas pulled him close in a tight embrace.
“Ai, Haldir. My heart aches for you. Is there anything I can do? Do you need me to knock some sense into someone? Or I could let Gimli loose. He’s rather smitten with Galadriel.”
Haldir nodded. “I know.”
Legolas frowned. “How? According to your friends you haven’t left your talan since our arrival. How can you know?”
Haldir shrugged. “She keeps me informed.” He sat and wept, having just realised the truth. /Her love keeps me alive. She sustains me enough to remain. It is torture./
Legolas was shocked but he pulled him close. After a while he made a decision and stood, pulling Haldir along. “Come, off of this cold floor. Into the bed with you. Aragorn wants to leave the day after tomorrow, in early dawn, but I am not leaving you until then.” He placed the warden in the bed and removed his tunic, only to find another underneath.
Haldir noticed Legolas’ gasp as the prince saw how skinny he had become. He smiled faintly. “Now you know why I wear three tunics instead of one.”
Legolas nodded. “You need to eat.”
Haldir shook his head. “I’m not hungry. Just sleepy.” Even though he didn’t realise it he had just revealed how serious the situation was and Legolas’ look took on a determined expression.
He lay down on the covers and held Haldir and had to force his tears to remain inside. He waited for the other to be sound asleep before he silently sneaked outside.
He ignored everyone else and went straight to Galadriel, his frustration mounting when he couldn’t find her. When he finally saw her she seemed gravely upset and he temporarily faltered. But the image of Haldir’s bones sticking out was enough stimulation.
“Lady Galadriel. There’s something you should know.”
She smiled at him and Legolas realised she was in even worse despair than he had thought. He could tell that only her great strength of will kept the flow of tears and the cry of pain inside.
Seeing his care and concern her smile became warm. “I already know, Legolas. Go back before he wakes alone.”
He nodded and ran back.
She watched him go with a heavy heart. /How can I fix this? I refuse to pay this price./ But she knew any attempt would be pointless. She had seen the possible futures and they were all as bad. /I will have to morn you at any rate, so I shall let you decide your own death, my precious./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Celeborn instantly sensed his wife’s despair when she entered their room and he rushed forward.
She warded him off, glaring at him. It didn’t last long before she broke down, falling in his arms, crying the tears that demanded a way out.
“Driel? What did you see? What horror did the mirror show you?”
She closed her eyes. “The horror of Helm’s Deep. Soon the fellowship will go separate ways and Aragorn will lead Gimli and Legolas into Rohan where they will aid King Theoden.” She shivered. “I hope against hope Gandalf will be able to prevent it from happening.”
Celeborn nodded. “Many of our kindred will find their death there, or else in the battles to come. But Haldir is leading them, meleth. I have every faith in him.”

He pulled her closer as her tears became stronger. He could understand. Part of his heart tightened in dread at the thought of his beloved fighting those large numbers, but he hang on to his faith in Haldir and his believe he would see him again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haldir woke to the sensation of wet drops falling on his face. Looking up he was temporarily confused to see Legolas in his bed, holding him. But what worried him more were the tears that now openly fell. He sat up and wiped them away. “Legolas?”
Legolas smiled through his tears. “I don’t want to see you in pain, Haldir. I’d do anything to make it stop.” Haldir’s eyes, so empty and once so full, made him lean in closer. He couldn’t speak the words, but he could show him.
Haldir frowned when Legolas covered his hands with his own before bringing them to his chest. He blinked in confusion. He understood what was being offered, but how could he take it. But he nodded, needing it. He felt guilty towards Legolas but the Prince smiled and kissed him gently. “I offer it freely and willingly. Pretend I am him.”
He started lavishing Haldir’s body in kisses, cringing every time he felt the bones. He soon had him writhing and moaning in need. As much as he wanted to make it last, to make it as pleasurable for him as possible, he could not. Haldir was too weak.
So he carefully took himself. He knew Haldir wouldn’t want to be taken, that was the other elf’s prerogative and Legolas temporarily felt furious. How could anyone do that to such a beautiful elf as Haldir?
But he smiled when he felt Haldir come inside of him and it would have send him over the edge as well hadn’t the name tumbling from Haldir’s lips stunned him motionless. But everything now made sense.
He settled down beside the exhausted warrior and pulled him close, caressing and embracing him. /No wonder she knew. And no wonder you wither away./ The next day they remained in bed and Legolas’ presence did help Haldir regain some strength and the stubborn Prince even succeeded making him eat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The morning of the departure came and Legolas couldn’t help but wonder if Celeborn knew. If the ruler knew of Haldir’s suffering or even of his love. Knowing Galadriel knew didn’t offer him a clue, for she could have seen it in her mirror.

He smiled proudly at the warrior, whose exterior showed nothing of the immense pain he felt. /I will come back for you when all this is over./
He sensed Aragorn’s questioning looks, but ignored it. He knew and understood Aragorn’s questions as to why he had requested to remain behind as well as he could understand the pained denial. He knew Aragorn needed him and his skills and he knew Haldir wouldn’t have allowed him to remain any way, but that didn’t stop him from worrying and feeling a fist close around his heart. He didn’t want to lose the warrior to Mandos.

Once in the boat he was glad Gimli started their usual banter. But he knew the Dwarf knew something was wrong. “You seem fond of that thing. I thought you said Mirkwood bows are the best?”
Legolas nodded. “It’s Haldir’s spare. I love him.” He forced his tears to remain inside and kept his gaze on the distance. He needed to focus on the mission.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rumil shook his head as he saw his brother pack. “Shouldn’t you pack some more clothes? We’re going to be gone for quite a while, Haldir.”
Haldir nodded. “I want to travel fast and we can’t afford to bring much. Weapons and food and one set of spare clothes, Ru. That is it. For all of us.”
Orophin stood and threw the book he’s been flipping to the ground. “Why won’t you let us come? We can cover each other’s backs! This is folly, you need us.”
Haldir turned and glared at his brother. “To guard the borders. I would like to have a realm to return to.”
Once all volunteers were gathered Celeborn and Galadriel spoke some final words of courage and faith. Haldir stepped forward to greet them on behalf of his men. At the end he bowed. “Namárie.”
Celeborn smiled and nodded. “Aye, namárie an sí.”
Haldir turned and led his men through the trees. Even though he sensed their eyes on his back he ignored the sensation and he ignored their spiritual presence as well.
He kept a gruelling pace, but he knew they had to make haste if they were to arrive before the battle. Galadriel had told him so. Seeing the structure in his mind’s eye he wondered how Saruman figured he could breach it, but he knew the cunning one would find a way. Death would follow shortly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After leading his men inside he smiled warmly, seeing the joy on Aragorn’s face at their presence. He spoke the formal words and told his men to relax for now and handed over control to Aragorn.

Legolas pulled him along, happiness and worry at war on his face. Haldir laughed when he saw he was actually trying to count his tunics with his eyes. “One. I ate or I wouldn’t have made it here.”
Legolas sighed relieved. “Much has happened but at least you are doing better. I’ve been so worried to lose you to death.”
Haldir caressed his hair. “You will, Legolas. I shall not survive this battle.” He smiled and pulled the other close as shock entered the blue orbs. “But perhaps a miracle will occur. Come, let’s spend the night together. I felt at peace in your arms.”
Legolas guided him to a secluded spot where they laid down, just holding each other. He told them about the foe they were about to face and their weak spots. Haldir smiled, determined to take down as many as he could.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The battle was raging in full intensity and Legolas had lost sight of Haldir. /Why did I join Aragorn down here? I should have stayed there./
Suddenly Aragorn’s scream cut through the air and Legolas turned, seeing his friend hold Haldir. He saw Aragorn succumb to his rage and attack.
He released a scream himself and ran towards his beloved. He would bring his body into safety, even if it was the last thing he did.
He was stunned to see Gimli come to his aid and clear his path when he tried to carry him inside the keep. “Why didn’t I stay there? I could have stopped them.” He sighed. “He came here to die, Gimli.”
His eyes, that previously had been filled with infinite sadness now filled with rage and anger. “Celeborn, you are going to pay!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Galadriel walked closer to her husband. During their walk he had doubled over from pain and his scream had filled the air. She had felt her connection with Haldir die as well, but she knew Celeborn’s pain was greater. She kneeled at his side. “I could not stop it any more. I am sorry.” Celeborn didn’t respond and was meek when she pulled him up and steered him inside.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The chief healer shook his head and looked at his lady with sadness and pain. “He’s closed himself for the world, my lady. Which would not be extremely bad if he accepts food and liquids but everything we feed him comes out. Forcing him would drown him instead.” He lowered his head, feeling sad. “We’re losing him.”
Galadriel nodded. “He’s finally realised the truth.” She walked away and started preparing her journey and Celeborn’s pyre.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rumil and Orophin ran towards the returning elves, scanning for their brother, but they couldn’t see him. And with that their last sparkle of hope had faded. Ever since Galadriel told them they had hoped the mirror had been wrong, that Haldir had somehow managed to change it, but apparently luck wasn’t on their side.
But they were stunned to see Legolas ride amongst them and they rushed towards him, hoping he knew what had happened.

Legolas too was happy to see them and it was with sadness that he gave them back Haldir’s weapons. But there was one thing he wasn’t willing to part from, or rather two: Haldir’s cloak and the lock of hair he had stolen from the warrior the night before the battle. He told them everything but omitted the ugly truth he himself had realised too late. He didn’t want them to feel guilty as well and to start wondering why Haldir had wanted to die.

“Where are Galadriel and Celeborn?”
Rumil sighed. “Galadriel is already preparing everything for our departure. And Celeborn…” His voice faded and Orophin smiled sadly at Legolas. “We lit his pyre two days ago. The healer says he felt the onslaught and could no longer survive.” He shrugged. “But I think it is more. When I look at Galadriel… I don’t know…”

He sighed and looked at Legolas. “Thank you for taking care of his body for us. It means a lot to know he received the proper care.”
Rumil wiped away his tears and nodded. “Haldir had wanted to remain, but now that he’s…” He faltered but found his voice back soon. “We should sail as well, Phin.”
Orophin nodded. “Aye. There’s nothing keeping us here. Shall we see you there one day, Legolas?”
He nodded. “Aye. I’ve promised to travel with Gimli and I cannot leave before Aragorn passes. But I’ll come.” /I don’t care where I am for my heart cries and the loss will always remain./

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haldir smiled and inhaled deeply. /I had no idea a dead soul has a body./
Mandos stood before him, a weary look over his face. Haldir was surprised to see the sad understanding where he had expected to see anger. “You do not need it, but it is better this way. I am sad to see you in my halls, Haldir. This is a sad day. I don’t know if I can manage much longer. It’s a bloody invasion today.”
A chuckle behind them made Haldir turn and he smiled when he saw his father. He ran forward and cried on his shoulder. He didn’t care what his father thought, but now he could cry without shame and he did, letting all his emotions come out.
Halmir guided him to a garden and sat him down. “You know, the life of the death resembles the life of the living. You will find it a pleasurable stay.”
Haldir soon got into a routine. He would spend the mornings walking and talking with his father, mostly in the gardens. And during midday he would read books, he had instantly found a great respect for the Doomsvala when he saw the grand library in his halls and the free and unlimited access for all. Haldir loved reading those volumes. In the evenings he would listen to the musicians and sit by the fire.
But from time to time he would look up, frowning. When his father asked him about it he shrugged. “I cannot explain it. It’s like I keep hearing a voice but when I look up there’s nobody there. Sometimes I hear my name, or a lament, or just shards of sentences. But always there’s great pain in them.”
He looked at his father for an answer but Halmir shook his head. “I’ve never heard of such a thing happening before. Perhaps you should talk to Námo?”
Haldir shook his head. “Nay. It’s probably nothing.” And yet, he couldn’t help feeling the need to help the voice. He wanted to take that pain away.
In the shadows the Doomsvala smiled. /You need some time to heal and get over them. You were never given the chance, but that shall change. Your lover awaits you./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mandos rearranged his robes and prepared himself for the fight. The coming arrival would fight him but he was more than ready to face him.

He crossed his arms and glared. “So, Celeborn, there you are.” He raised his hand and stopped the other from speaking. “You died a selfish death and you will not get your desire.”
He raised an eyebrow when the other opened his mouth to counter him. “Not to hurt you but to prevent you from hurting him further. Do you really think you can change in death? Be together in death?”
He shook his head and his posture and his voice became compassionate. “You cannot, Celeborn. You need to heal and see the pain you caused him and yourself before I can let you anywhere near him.” He cocked his head. “And my halls aren’t the best place to do that. I would have to restrict your movements which is uncalled for. Nay, it is best to return you to the living and place you in my brother’s care. Spend eternity there hating me or do as I say and you will be rewarded.”

Before Celeborn could counter him the Vala transported him and the next moment he gaped at Lorien’s smiling face. The Vala told Celeborn what he was supposed to do and smiled when Námo’s thoughts entered his mind. `I trust you to keep him on track, dear brother. And when the time is there…`
Lorien nodded. `It will come to pass.`

Part two

Aragorn sighed and nodded to the others. Today they would place their friend for an ultimatum. He entered, closely followed by his wife and her brothers. Gimli was already keeping Legolas company and the Dwarf’s eyes were troubled.

Aragorn sat down and forced him to look him in the eye. “We refuse to watch you like this, Legolas. It is time for you to sail. Elrohir and Elladan will accompany you.”
Legolas stood and shook his head. “That is not necessary, Aragorn. It matters not where I dwell and I promised…”
Arwen interrupted before he could finish. “Gimli offered to stand by my side. I shall sail as well and our friend will see me safely there. It’s out of your hands, Legolas.”
Elladan and Elrohir took up position near the prince. “Aye. Thranduil is waiting for us.” They grinned. “We made a little detour on our way here and he was more than willing to escort his son to the havens.”
Legolas shrugged and stood. “Fine, then we sail.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond stood on the shore and inhaled the sea-air. “They’re late.”
Galadriel smiled and squished his hand. “They’ll come. I never would have guessed the twins to sail.” Her eyes pierced the mist and she thought she saw the contours of a sail. “I worry for Legolas. He joining us too soon.”
Elrond nodded, but smiled when a ship slowly appeared and set course towards the shore. He ran forward. “My sons!”
Elladan and Elrohir jumped out of the ship when it was close enough and ran forward. It surprised them how welcome these lands felt to them. After Elrond hugged them they willingly underwent another by their grandmother.
Elrond raised his eyebrows when he saw Thranduil disembark, aiding his son, who seemed withered. “What happened?”
Elladan sighed. “He’s grieving Haldir, adar. And Thranduil agreed to see us to the havens but once there he decided to join us.”
Elrond rushed forward and pulled Legolas in a hug as well, ignoring the shocked look and the sunken features. “It’s a pleasure to see you again. We must talk soon, I wish to hear all about my daughter. But first you must explore a little. Thranduil.” He bowed and smiled. “I must say I am surprised to see you. I thought you would never leave?”
Thranduil nodded. “I am returning with this ship, but I had to make sure my son arrived. Take care of him, Elrond.”
If Elrond was surprised by the words he didn’t show it. Instead he nodded and pushed the younger blond into the twins’ direction while he walked Thranduil back to the ship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Galadriel entered her cottage and smiled, sensing Elrond’s spicy fragrance on the air. “You might as well move in, Elrond.”
Elrond looked up and smiled. “I still don’t do well alone. I miss Glorfindel’s cheerful company. Why did he have to settle so far from us?”
Galadriel sat down and clasped his hands. “I don’t know. But you have the rest of us. What is it that truly worries you? Celebrían?”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. Not anymore. She’s happier than I’d ever seen her. I do not mind.”

He sighed. “It’s Legolas. He’s become silent and sadness comes from him in waves.”
Galadriel nodded. “I’ve just visited Rumil and Orophin. They told me Legolas avoids the crowds more and more, seeking solitude instead of a feast. This might be one wound Valinor cannot heal.”
Elrond nodded and stood, pacing.

After a while he stopped and looked at her with a cocked head. “I’m surprised you haven’t hunted me from your house yet. Celebrían could never stand it.”
Galadriel laughed and shrugged, continuing her work. “It belongs to you and as long as you stay out of the way I do not mind. Do you think I should tell them the truth?”
Elrond shrugged. “I don’t know. There’s no telling how they’ll react. But something tells me they already know. How else could they have accepted Celeborn’s death so easily?”

They stopped talking when there was a knock on the door. “My lady. Are you in?”
Galadriel hurried to answer the door and pulled in a troubled Erestor.
Elrond stood and poured some wine. It was true, he knew where everything was kept in this house. It was his own place where he would be searching for glasses. “Erestor? What is wrong?”
The counsellor sighed. “My house got flooded. Sort of.” He shook his head. “The neighbours children completely demolished it and there’s water everywhere. My lovely books.”
Galadriel and Elrond were beside him and supported him. “I shall talk to them myself. How can they?” Galadriel’s eyes were filled with fire and she left.
Elrond stood and pulled her back. “I think the more eminent problem is Erestor’s housing.”
She shook her head. “Not really. Yours stands practically empty. Give it to Erestor.” She turned and this time did leave.
Erestor looked up with hope in his eyes. “Would you mind? It stands alone and offers me silence.”
Elrond nodded. “Of course. Galadriel wants it that way and you know she always gets her way.” His tone was light and filled with care and affection.
Erestor narrowed his eyes. “Have you two found each other then?”
Elrond shrugged. “There’s no love, but we have become partners.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Varda smiled at the stunned elves before her and patiently waited for their answer. She could already see it and it warmed her to know they would care and love him. Elrond and Galadriel stopped looking at each other and nodded. “We accept.”
Varda smiled. “You might already find a suitable tutor.”
Elrond laughed. “Erestor is the best. He misses it, no matter what he states.”
When the Vala left the house Elrond looked at Galadriel. “Today… Should we start already?”
Galadriel laughed and nodded. “We’d better.” Her laugh became wilder. “Your wife now becomes your daughter.” Her laugh filled the cottage and soon Elrond’s laughter joined.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rumil dashed inside the cottage he shared with his brother, the twins and Legolas. “Hay, you lazy bones, where are you?”
Elladan entered the shared living room and glared at him. “Why are you always so cheerful in the wee hours of morn?”
Rumil laughed and twirled him round. “Is Legolas here?”
Elrohir now approached them as well and shook his head. “Nay. He went for his walk again. I am glad we are sharing the place with you two. Two extra pairs of eyes to watch him.”

Rumil nodded, hardly noticing. He had to tell his happy news. “Galadriel is pregnant.”
Elladan goggled and sat down. “We’re getting a brother or a sister?”
Rumil nodded. “Aye. In a way. They agreed when Varda asked them to become Haldir’s parents. Phin, our brother is being reborn.”
Elladan jumped up and hugged him. “We must tell Legolas.”
Rumil shook his head and stopped him from running away. “Nay. We can’t. They’re keeping him away from us. They fear seeing us or Legolas will trigger his memories to return before he is ready to face them.”
Orophin sat down and frowned. “But won’t Galadriel’s presence?”
Rumil shrugged. “Galadriel is positive it won’t. She already was sort of a mother to him and it could easily become a real mother-son relationship, Phin. Elladan and Elrohir can visit and keep us posted on his progress. I can’t wait till the day he reaches maturity. We can see and talk to him then.”

Elladan stood and looked outside, smiling when he saw Legolas come back. No matter how miserable the Prince felt he would still keep an eye on time, if only to stop his friends from worrying. “Ro, we should go. I -do- think Phin and Ru should tell him. He deserves to know the truth.”
Rumil nodded and ushered them out. “And don’t forget to bring the milk!”

Orophin shook his head and ran towards Legolas. “Sometimes I think my dear brother is a female in disguise. We have pancakes for breakfast. Tasty?”
Legolas nodded and ran inside. Orophin’s pancakes had swiftly become his favourite meal and now the elf made sure to serve at least once a weak, but never on the same meal.

Rumil swallowed and smiled. “It’s good to see you eat more. There’s something we should tell you. Something we should have told you before but we didn’t dare. In fact I still lack the courage to do so.”
Orophin nodded. “Aye. It’s only Elladan’s threat to demolish the house that makes Ru cooperative.”
Legolas smiled and Orophin shrugged. He no longer cared he couldn’t make the Prince laugh, as long as smiles were still willingly given for real he didn’t worry as much. “About Haldir. Or rather, his heart.”
Rumil nodded. “He had a sort of affair with both Galadriel and Celeborn, but on a different level. At some point he broke off with Celeborn, but we shall never know why. It was Galadriel’s love that sustained him. We thought he had fallen out of love with our brother but he hadn’t.”
Orophin wiped away his tears. “Nay. He died soon after he felt Haldir fall.” He smiled. “They never knew we knew the truth about them. Nor Haldir. Galadriel still is unaware. And we don’t want that to change. It’s in the past. But you deserve to know.”

Legolas looked at them with pained eyes. “Why tell me that? Why hurt me more?”
Orophin sighed. “How much do you know of our history? Of Haldir’s past?”
Legolas smiled. “Everything. He told me everything. We never had any secrets from each other. I courted him for a while, but he told me his heart was already taken.”
Rumil nodded. /If only you’d courted him ten years earlier./ But he didn’t speak the words, knowing it would hurt Legolas more.
Legolas smiled. “I didn’t know about Galadriel though. I understand his pain a lot better now. And why he wanted to die.” Fresh tears sprung in his eyes and Orophin vacated his chair and sat on Legolas’ arm stool.

They’d lost count of how many times they’d comforted him like this. Them or the twins. But they did not mind. They felt honoured Legolas felt secure enough in their presence to cry.

Erestor smiled warmly as Galadriel placed plates on the table. “I never thought Elrond to be such a good cook.”
Galadriel smiled warmly. “You’d rather taste my poor skills?”
Erestor shook his head. “Nay. Haldir told me how horrible it is and he tells a vivid tale.” He turned on his chair. “Haldir, are you ready? Dinner is about to be served.” He was still amazed at the elf. He knew it was the old Haldir and the more time they spend together the more he saw but he also saw many changes.

Galadriel smiled as she sensed his thoughts. “He’s free of burdens, Erestor. His heart will be free to follow its true path this time.”
“Aye, but he will need our guidance. Perhaps it isn’t such a good idea.”
Erestor shook his head and smiled as Elrond placed his latest skill on the table. “But I think it is. We can watch Celeborn and prevent the past from repeating itself. And if Haldir learns to see him as an uncle, he will not see him as a potential mate.” He inhaled again. “Smells delicious, Elrond. When is he due?”
Galadriel smiled. “A week from now. A day before Haldir’s birthday.”

Elrond growled as Haldir still didn’t dash inside. The elfling created more trouble than the twins had done. “Now where is that rascal?” He walked to the door and raised his voice. “Haldir!!!!”

Instantly a bundle of energy passed him by and advanced on Erestor. “Erestor, look, she’s injured.” He looked up at his guardians and smiled. The eyes were both ancient and youthful. “I am sorry I am late for dinner, but I had to help it. Can you heal her, Elrond?” He stopped wondering why his parents wanted him to use their names and had become accustomed to it. It was the ground for his tendency to see them as his guardians instead.

Erestor’s eyes twinkled. “She must be hungry as well.” He shook his head and looked at his old friend. “Perhaps you should create an animal hospital, Elrond? With all the injured creatures Haldir keeps finding.”
Haldir carefully placed the animal in an empty box and started feeding it, listening closely to the small talk at the table. When the animal was asleep he dashed to Erestor and hopped on his lap.

Seated safely he instantly started wolfing down his food.
Erestor shook his head in annoyance. “That is one things I fear I can never rid him off.”
Galadriel laughed and shrugged. “Perhaps as he gets older he will become calmer at table?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celeborn smiled warmly and guilt left his eyes when he saw how happy Galadriel had become under Elrond’s constant care. He had arrived early and seeing them interact told him enough. And now he watched his friends celebrate.
The Peredhel’s eyes locked with his and sparkled, but Elrond didn’t speak. Instead he kept a close eye on his charge. “And what are your plans concerning our son?”
Galadriel rolled her eyes but she could understand Elrond’s question and the Peredhel had always been more protective than she and Celeborn had been towards others.
Celeborn smiled. “To think he’s reborn as your son, Galadriel. Do you cope with it?”
She nodded. “Aye. I had no trouble at all. Nor Elrond. But what happened to you? How come you were living in Lorien’s gardens?”
Celeborn now told them his tale and at the end he shrugged. “I’ve changed, Driel. I never should have pursued him. I sat him back while he could have been more than happy with Legolas.” He smiled as he watched the young Haldir play with some animals. “I shall not make the same mistake twice. If you want me to keep my distance…”
Galadriel shook her head. “Nay, but guard your emotions and thoughts closely around him.”
Elrond now looked him in the eye. “If you share our lives he will come to see you as another guardian and not as a potential mate.” He stood and walked towards the partying elves, granting them some time alone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Haldir frowned when he saw someone strange talk so amicably with his guardians. He knew them well enough to know this was a stranger they knew well. He went to Erestor, who turned to him before he had even reached him. “Who is that elf talking to my parents?”
Erestor was glad he had already gone through this with Galadriel and Elrond so he was fully prepared. “That is Galadriel’s old husband. The one that died when she still lived in Middle-Earth.”
Haldir nodded. “But why doesn’t Elrond….” He cocked his head, unable to define what he saw.
Erestor steered him away and smiled. “Elrond knows of their shared past and as a matter of fact Elrond’s old wife was Galadriel’s daughter.” He grinned at the elfling’s face. “Rather confusing, isn’t it?”
Haldir nodded. “But maybe that’s because I’m only ten.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rain, darkness, fear and screaming voices riding the air. Clinging metal, counting. 32, 33, 34 More counting, from his right. 45, 46, 47, 48
Where was he? What was this place? It seemed so foreign and yet so familiar… What was happening? Those creatures weren’t orcs, were they?
His vision shifted as someone shouted his name. He could see a mortal telling him to head for the keep but what stunned him was the elf in the middle of them, fighting as a flaming angel of revenge. Haldir felt his heart stir and then a wave of ugliness thundered inside and he screamed.
He sat up in his bed, his entire body covered in his own sweat. He didn’t know what was making his pulse so rapid. The fear and sense of dread he had sensed in the dream or the creature he had seen.
He left the bed and jumped out his window. He didn’t want to face his guardians right now. Elrond with his worry and potions as less as Galadriel’s knowing eyes. He ran and ran, letting the wind soothe him and empty his mind.
He stopped running when he no longer recognized his surroundings. Before he could panic he heard a voice sing and it captivated him. He walked closer but stopped when he heard the sadness to the song, that he now realised was a lament. Tears sprung to life and he wanted to help the elf, but the song and the voice had moved him into motionlessness.
When the song ended he dashed to the origin only to see an elf walking away in the distance: an elf with golden hair. He shook his head and realised he needed to talk to someone. But where was he?
/Backtrack my own trail and then I can go to Erestor./ He didn’t question his knowledge or his sudden ability to read nature.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As Erestor returned from his nightly walk he was shocked when he found a heavily upset Haldir pounding on his door and he ran closer. “Haldir? What is wrong? Did something happen to Elrond or Galadriel?”
Haldir seemed confused at Erestor’s appearance outside and the old counsellor embraced him and held him close as he steered him inside. “You sit here and I’ll get us both some warm tea.”

Haldir smiled, he liked it here. Erestor breathed calm and serenity and wherever the elf would live would do the same. Erestor’s place was warm, friendly and inviting, different from any other house he’s ever visited.

“My dream came back.”
Erestor dropped his cup but managed to cover his shock and sat down. “I am sorry to hear that. Such violence…”
Haldir smiled and Erestor narrowed his eyes, sure his words hadn’t triggered it. In fact Haldir didn’t even seem to have registered his words.
“But now I know why it felt so confusing, Erestor. I remember now. I remember him.”
Erestor frowned. “Who?” /We have to be careful./
Haldir’s smile widened and Erestor could detect blossoming love in the orbs; the same love he had seen when the warden had looked at Legolas but back then it had faded all too soon. “The angel. I don’t know his face, Erestor, or his name. I don’t even know if he lives still. He could have died after me.”

He stopped talking, realising what he had said.
Erestor realised as well, wondering how much else Haldir remembered. But that was impossible! It was too soon.
Haldir shook his head. “Nay. I think I saw him today. Yes, now that I think about it, it had to be him, Erestor. It had to be.”
Erestor sighed in relieve. Haldir didn’t remember.

He smiled and poured in the tea. “Care to explain this a little further to me?”
Haldir laughed and nodded. “I needed to run when I woke up. I felt both terror and love, Erestor, and it confused me. I couldn’t deal with Elrond’s concern and potions and even less with Galadriel’s knowing eyes. I snuck out and ran blindly.”
Erestor shook his head. “You are lucky this is Valinor, little one.”
Haldir nodded. “I know. But I stopped when I no longer recognized my surroundings, Erestor. And then I heard him. I heard his song. It was the saddest lament I ever heard and such a sweet voice. When he stopped I ran closer, I wanted to help, but he was gone. I did see his back. It was him.”

Erestor nodded in answer to the many questions unspoken. “I know him. He’s a Sindar Prince. A valiant warrior and extremely stubborn.”
Haldir smiled. “Like me? Elrond always scolds my stubborn streak. He states I am almost Peredhel in that view.”
Erestor laughed and nodded. “You are. His life is a sad tale, Haldir. He fell deeply in love with a male warrior of a different realm and he even courted him, before hearing his beloved’s heart was already taken.”
Haldir gasped and concern entered the orbs.
Erestor smiled. “He buried his feelings and settled for strong friendship instead.”
Haldir cocked his head. “How did he smother them? I cannot imagine doing that.”
Erestor smile turned sad. “Burying something is different from smothering something, Haldir. He loved him still and I am willing to bet his love only continued to grow. At some point he even offered himself to the other to ease his pain. And then, he saw him die in a great battle. His beloved had come to die.”

Those words stirred something inside Haldir and images flashed before him but Erestor was unaware. Haldir focused on the words but remembered the images and the trigger. He had seen enough to know it was about his angel and he wanted to see it again when he was alone.

Erestor refilled his cup and smiled. “His friends forced our Prince to sail here and he’s been living here ever since under the vigilant eyes of four of his best friends. He’s turned silent and avoids crowds. Galadriel fears this is one wound Valinor cannot heal.”
Haldir nodded. “Of course. He needs help. Even I can see that and I am only ten.”

He jumped up. “Thank you for this, Erestor. But I think it is best I go back now. My guardians will be worried.”
Erestor nodded and stood. “I shall walk you home.” He opened the door and jumped back in shock when Celeborn had his hand raised to knock.

“Erestor, I was wondering if…” A smile graced his features. “Ah, yes, there he is. Are you all right, Haldir? Galadriel and Elrond are worried about you.” He shook his head. “The Peredhel obviously thinks you’re still two.”
Haldir laughed but reached for Erestor’s hand none the less. He feared the other and all his instincts told him the elf was trouble.
Erestor smiled. “Come, home.” He lifted Haldir, not wanting to have Celeborn touch him, not knowing what would happen then.
Celeborn sensed the fear and he sighed. Obviously Haldir’s past wasn’t that repressed as Galadriel thought. But he didn’t mind. If Haldir feared him he would keep his distance and this mess wouldn’t be likely to be repeated. For truth be told, he still desired him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond stood at the edge of the dunes, keeping an eye on the swimming elves. “Relax! The twins are with him.” He growled at Galadriel’s voice.
Celeborn smiled at her and stood, approaching Elrond. “She didn’t forget they are your children too, but no danger lurks here, Elrond, and the twins will prevent Haldir from drowning. You raised them well.”
He guided him to sit with them. “We are not saying you shouldn’t worry but please offer us something more than your back to communicate with.”
Elrond’s warm smile broke through and he nodded. “I am sorry. Old habits die hard. And I daily fear the twins will say or do something to trigger a memory.”
Celeborn shrugged. “They will come when they need to, Elrond. We have no control over that.”
He read Galadriel’s eyes and smiled. “Come, in order to fully relax I suggest we decline further and watch the clouds pass us by.”
He laid down and pulled his wife close, meanwhile forcing Elrond to lay on her other side. He frowned when Elrond prevented him from pulling his hand back but didn’t object. He smiled at the surprisingly tight and warm grip the other had on his limb.
Galadriel peeked at him and smiled. She recognized the signs, having seen them before and she reached out to talk to Elrond. `Tell me, how do you feel for my husband?`
Elrond looked at her with his eyebrow high. `He died and thus the vows were absolved. But I like him a lot.`
She smiled. `Good. He’s falling in love with you. And he still loves me.`
Elrond smiled and kissed her, carefully monitoring Celeborn’s reaction and he clearly noticed the blond’s arousal as result.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Haldir pouted. “Why can’t I come with you? I want to have fun. You can teach me some fighting skills.”
Elladan shook his head. “Nay, Haldir. Our housemates would only scare you.” He bend down and ruffled the other’s hair. “Just be a good boy.”
Elrohir nodded. “Aye. We shall visit soon again. Promise.” Haldir was a delight.

The delight now dressed himself, muttering under his breath. Sometimes he really hated his guardians who never let him outside the village. Seeing neither of them was watching he decided to follow the twins. But he could hardly do that with them noticing or they would only bring him back. He smiled wickedly. He would track them.

He normally wasn’t disobedient but he had taken to wandering when he was alone. He limited his time in the cottage to sleeping and eating and thus limiting his time spend in Celeborn’s company.

While he tracked the twins’ trail he thought about his life and his dreams. In the last ten years they had become more frequent but every dream he had always figured his angel and as time passed by he fell more and more in love.
He also remembered meeting with Erestor from time to time and this whole new side to Erestor caused stirrings in his heart as well.

He shook his head, forcing himself to focus. /Why don’t I remember Celeborn? I know he was wed to Galadriel and they ruled the golden woods. I remember her, but not him./
/I remember who I was. Something tells me those housemates of Elladan and Elrohir are my brothers./

He growled, realising there no longer was a track and there were four cottages in sight. Which one belonged to the twins? He shrugged and walked to the small wall and settled on it. He pulled out his latest reading material and opened it.
Unknown to his tutor and guardians he had started to read books on Middle Earth. Erestor was teaching him history but he wanted to know more about the last millennia before everyone had sailed.

/The Fellowship got separated as Frodo decided no longer to risk the others and continue alone, with faithful Samwise at his side. The two other Hobbits gave the ring bearer a change to escape by distracting the Uruk-Hai./
A shiver went through him and images of ugly men flashed before his mind. He pulled his cloak closer and continued reading.
/The price was high. Boromir, steward of Gondor died while defending them and was given the last rites by the remaining companions. Aragorn led the other two as they set in their pursuit. Gimli and Legolas became as determined as he to see things through./

He blinked and suddenly gasped. /Legolas!/ Instantly the image of his angel flashed before him again but at the same time he saw the terror that haunted his dreams.

He started flipping the pages, searching for battles in this tale where Legolas wasn’t the only elf participating. /Fields of Peleannor… No./ Somehow he knew he had to go back. /The victory of Helm’s Deep was an empty one indeed for too many found death. Too many of our own brethren are now walking the halls of Mandos, but the highest price to pay was losing Haldir o’ Lórien that day. All praise his skills but obviously they weren’t enough to keep him with us. The only ones seeing the emptiness of this victory were the remaining elves and Aragorn, now King Ellasar./

Haldir stopped reading and stared at the words. He now knew everything he wanted to know. He knew why those images haunted him: it was his death.
/Rumil and Orohin… are they here or… And Legolas? Whom did he love that died that day?
Or did he lose him at the fields of Peleannor? Was there a battle after the Ring was destroyed? Erestor never spoke of it./

He suddenly realised the words had been personal and he closed the book to see the author. His eyes widened when his tutor’s name stared back at him. He decided to pretend ignorance for the time being, but he would confront them all with this later.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor jumped aside to avoid a dashing Peredhel. “Elrond?”
The old ruler looked over his shoulder. “My daughter is coming.”
Erestor immediately set in pursuit, eager to see her back as well.
Arwen smiled when she saw her family and friends waiting. Many strange elves had come out to greet her home as well and she smiled at Gimli. “Thank you for forcing me. It does feel good.”
Gimli nodded and blushed when Galadriel smiled at him and walked forward. “Ah, my dearest Gimli. You must tell us everything later. Legolas will be waiting for you.”
Gimli sighed relieved. He had feared the worst when he hadn’t seen his friend’s face.
Galadriel smiled sadly. “He takes to himself and avoids crowds.” She gave him the directions and Gimli dashed of, eager to see him again.
Arwen leaned in close to her father and her eyes widened when she saw a woman approach that could only be her mother.
Celebrían smiled. “Well met, daughter. I am glad we finally have the chance to get to know each other.”
Elladan slapped Arwen on the back. “Careful. She’s as tricky as we remember.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Gimli yelped and raised his axe when someone jumped from the flowery bushes before his path. He shook his head when he saw an elfling. “I could have killed you, imp.”
Haldir laughed and Gimli jumped back in shock, remember it, but being unable to place it. To him Haldir was an elfling, one he had never met before.
Haldir cocked his head and pulled the beard.
Gimli patted his hand away. “That hurts. I don’t go pulling your hair either, now do I?” He continued walking but the curious Haldir easily hopped beside him.

“Are you really a Dwarf?”
Gimli nodded. “Aye, I am.” Haldir’s eyes shone and Gimli realised he wouldn’t get rid of this one any time soon. A thousand questions were fired at him at once and he shook his head.

“The name is Gimli.”
Haldir widened his eyes. “Son of Gloin?”
Gimli nodded and took a turn.
Haldir screamed happily and started dancing around him, once more firing many questions at the Dwarf, who groaned at the verbal abuse of his ears. “Aye, I know Laddy. That’s what I call Legolas, and if you are that curious to meet him remain silent. Your chatter will scare even him away.”

Haldir instantly held his voice and seemed to walk lighter as well and Gimli smiled. Both from the sudden silence and from seeing the cottages, of which he knew the middle one housed Legolas. He started running, grinning when Haldir came along and even passed him by. He saw the eager elfling rumble on the door to announce his presence.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Inside three elves groaned and Orophin placed a hand on Legolas’ leg to prevent him from leaving. “Ru will get rid of whomever is on the other side.”
Rumil swiftly made his way to the door and opened it, gasping and staggering back when he saw the face he knew so well. “Haldir!”
Haldir nodded and jumped inside. “Aye. Gimli, son of Gloin, is here for Legolas.” His anxiety to see his angel made him fail to respond to seeing his brother.
Gimli now burst in as well. “You are not laddy. Where’s laddy? Don’t tell me I suffered this one’s chatter for no reason.”
Seeing Legolas he dashed forward and hugged the stunned elf. He cocked his head and carefully studied him. “You don’t look better. But you don’t look worse either.” He shrugged and dropped his belongings.
Rumil glared at him. “If he moves in I move out.”
Orophin nodded. “Aye.” He glared at Gimli. “You insulted our brother once and that’s once too many.”
Gimli’s eyes became sad and lowered his head. “I am sorry. You must miss him.” He looked up with sparkling eyes. “He was a good warrior. He slain more than I did. And I didn’t even die.”
Legolas stood and walked away. “Nice to have you back.” But the words lacked warmth. Their bantering had reopened his wounds and his tears fell anew. He didn’t want to cry in front of Gimli.
He twirled in anger when a hand was placed on his own. His eyes widened in disbelief and he staggered backwards. /This cannot be./
Haldir smiled. “I am sure they do not mean to hurt you. Even the best of friends can be insensitive sometimes.” He grinned and started tugging the other along. “Come, you need to run to release your tension.”
They ran for hours and hours and didn’t really look where they were going. Once it got dark did they stop and Haldir found himself panicking, not knowing where they were or how to get back.
Legolas smiled when he saw a familiar warrior. “Glorfindel!!!” He ran forward, this time dragging Haldir along. He had by now realised the other was reborn and had found his way to him. This time he would do anything to keep him.
Glorfindel smiled and jumped of his horse to hug his friend. Haldir yelped when the spontaneous blond treated him to the same movement. “I see you found a lover, Legolas. I must say I am not surprised to see him looking like Haldir.”
Haldir glared at him. “I -am- Haldir. And we’re not lovers. You’ve always been dense, Glorfindel. And your unstoppable mouth has ruined too much.” He clasped his hand in front of his mouth. /Where did that came from? My memory. Legolas wasn’t my lover?/ That realisation saddened him.
Legolas cried a few tears of his own, but managed to hide them from his companions.
“We are a little lost. Gimli came and it opened…”
Glorfindel nodded and he whistled. “Can you both ride?”
Haldir shook his head.
Legolas smiled. “You can ride with me then. I shall bring you home. Your parents must be worried.”
Haldir shrugged. “I don’t care if they are. Elrond is too protective and wouldn’t even let me leave the house if he could and Galadriel is too calm. They are keeping things from me and I don’t like it.” He shrugged. “And the less time I spend near Celeborn the better.”
Glorfindel widened his eyes; he accompanied them, making sure they wouldn’t get lost. “But you loved him. I know, I walked in on you once.”
Legolas glared at him but Haldir gasped and grabbed his arms. “Erestor! I need Erestor!” Confusing images and emotions were assaulting him in full force and he needed his tutor to help him separate them.
Legolas sped up and soon they were at the counsellor’s house.
Glorfindel knocked on the door. “Erestor? Open up!” His unexpected and demanding voice was enough to force Erestor to flung the door open instantly and the counsellor gasped in shock when he saw Legolas hold Haldir. “What happened? How could they let this happen?”
He brushed past the blond and grabbed Haldir. “Go! Both of you!”
Glorfindel wanted to stay but Legolas dragged him along.
Haldir recovered when he felt the tea pour in his throat and he slowly told Erestor everything, not even leaving out the books and his newly found memory.
Erestor shook his head as he realised what had happened. They had been worrying over nothing. “Ask your questions, Haldir. I shall answer.”
Haldir smiled. “Was Glorfindel right? Was I Celeborn’s lover? Did I love him?”
Erestor sighed. “Glorfindel is a blabbermouth. And aye, you were his lover, but I do not think you loved him. I think you loved the idea of loving him. You loved being loved by them both, to belong.”
Haldir asked Erestor to tell him about this affair as he didn’t remember and he silently drank his tea as he listened. At the end he shrugged. “I was the one Legolas loved, wasn’t I?”
Erestor nodded and awaited the next question, not sure what it would be. Haldir was still unpredictable, but at least now he knew why the elfling acted the way he did.
“Would he still love me as I am now or would he find the changes irritating?”
Erestor smiled when he heard the fear behind the question and he shook his head. “He loves you still and he knows there will be changes but I think he loves you enough to adapt and be patient.”
Haldir stood and retrieved the book. “Did -you- feel anything for me?”
Erestor blushed but didn’t back out. He nodded and was surprised his voice was even. “Aye. I loved you. But always from afar. At first I thought Legolas would win your heart but then I saw Celeborn had conquered you. I cannot compete with them.”
Haldir didn’t agree with that but he held his tongue. “What do you advice?”
Erestor stood and sighed. “You should tell Galadriel and Elrond you remember. They deserve to know. Also I think it best if Legolas and I keep our distance from you. Perhaps it is best if you go with Glorfindel and complete your scholarship there until you’ve reached your maturity. You can use the time to think and the absence of us all will enable you to make a well balanced decision.” He stood and smiled at Haldir. “I will arrange it and tell your guardians as well, if you want.”
Haldir suddenly was a child again and nodded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Elrond smiled at the sleeping Prince.
Rumil glared at him. “Why did you do that? A whole day, wiped from his mind!”
Elrond shrugged. “I do not have a choice. He’s not ready yet and if he would go after Haldir he will only lose him forever. Your brother needs time. And you can use it to prepare Legolas. Tell him, using what if situations.”
Orophin nodded. “And talking about our brother. We’ve been sparing him and that should stop.”

Part three

Haldir had become Glorfindel’s personal care and they both had found great joy in that arrangement. Glorfindel’s teaching methods were different and assured Haldir’s swift education. Also he didn’t keep the reborn youth away from books and knowledge and Haldir soon had his complete memory back but the unexplainable unease towards Celeborn never faded.

Glorfindel smiled at the now full grown elf, that would celebrate his maturity tomorrow. As promised they would journey back and Elrond would conduct the ceremony.

Haldir entered the room and smiled warmly at his friend. “Are you sure they won’t mind?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. I know them both pretty well and who can hate living here? We can always travel back and forth.” He didn’t foresee any problems for Haldir’s plan. He cocked his head. “The jewel smith delivered this when you were out.”
Haldir plunged on his seat. “I had to see goodbye to my friends. Rumil and Orophin will like them. I miss them.”

Glorfindel nodded but his gaze was fixed on the little box and Haldir grinned and opened it, showing the other elf the contends. Glorfindel gasped when he saw three delicate rings resting on the red velvet. The bands were small and the shiniest gold he’s ever seen and there were four gems, creating a circle, on top: one bright blue, one dark but soft green and one blackish brown. But the fourth seemed to contain all three colours simultaneously.
He whistled, impressed. “That must have cost you a lot.”
Haldir shrugged. “Not overly so.”

He stood and looked out the window over the busy streets and the forest beyond. He knew that beyond the forest lay the cliffs that dropped down to the small lake and he could always smell it in the air. He loved it here and could understand why Glorfindel had wanted to settle here instead of close to the sea.

He turned and grinned. “Will you keep them safe for me. I can not hold them until after the ceremony.”
Glorfindel nodded and smiled. “I shall make sure everyone’s there. So, shall we go?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel smiled warmly and waited for someone to open the door. He frowned when Elladan stood in the door opening.
The twin instantly hugged him tight. “Findy! What are you doing here? We’ve missed you.”
Glorfindel smiled. “I thought you and Elrohir were helping to prepare the party?”
Elladan nodded. “They kicked me back. I’m waiting for Ru and Phin to be ready.”
Glorfindel smiled. “I was sent to bring Legolas there. Prince Legolas?”
He stepped inside and smiled at Legolas who seemed improved. Apparently the talks about what if’s have kindled his hope. “Lady Galadriel and Lord Elrond have requested your presence at the celebration. The ceremony already took place and their charge is now an adult. You know that all free elves around are to meet him at the feast.”
Legolas sighed. He wanted to remain in the cottage but he realised full well Glorfindel would drag him there as he was. “I shall change.”
Elladan smiled. “We shall wait and travel together.”
The feast was grand and Haldir enjoyed himself. His eyes were always scanning for two elves and he smiled when he had located one of them.
“Erestor! You’ve been elusive today.” He hugged the other close and instantly claimed the lips. “I love you.” He shook his head and stopped the other from speaking. “Be silent and listen to me for a change. I fell in love with you when you first started teaching me, but I think I could have loved you in my old live as well, if that matters to you. Are you willing to accept both myself and Legolas in your life?”
Erestor’s eyes were wet with tears and he nodded. “Always.” He sighed. “You should know something about….”
Haldir shook his head and screamed, running towards the south edge of the field where Glorfindel was seen coming. He flung himself at the blond. “Where’ve you been?”
Glorfindel laughed. “Picking up some party-animals at Elrond’s request.”
Haldir nodded and his heart thundered when he saw his brothers and Legolas. He hugged his brothers, who happily returned the gesture. “I am not moving back.”
Erestor gasped, but then understood and nodded his consent. He would follow.
Haldir smiled and now approached Legolas, who stared at him in fear. “Legolas? Don’t you remember me? I am sorry, but I only just remembered our shared past or I would have sought you out before.”
Legolas smiled and flung himself at him, forcing himself not to kiss him.
Haldir stunned him by doing just that. Right after he went down on his knees. “I love you, Legolas. I’ve been blind and now that I’m reborn I can only apologize and hope I can win your heart. Will you allow me to open it again or have I scarred too badly?”
Legolas shook his head, wiping his tears away. His whole posture and his eyes showed extreme disbelief.
Erestor approached and smiled. “He speaks the truth, Legolas.”
The blond shook his head. “Nay. You love Celeborn and Galadriel.”
Haldir shook his head. “No. I never really did. I guess. Legolas, please don’t judge my present self for my past. Please. If I ever loved them I no longer do. Galadriel is my guardian, my mother, now, and Elrond my father.”
Rumil cocked his head. “What about Celeborn?”
Haldir shrugged. “He’s their lover now. And I still don’t like him.”
He sighed. “I am going to live in Glorfindel’s city. It is beautiful and it’s away from the people of my past life and my confusing youth. I would like for my brothers and mates to join me. Would you?”
Rumil and Orophin shared a look and nodded. “Legolas?”
The blond was blinking. “Mates?” The words echoed in his mind.
Haldir nodded. “Aye.” Once more he went down and he retrieved two beautiful crafted rings, identical to the one on his finger. With his left hand he grabbed one of Erestor’s hands and with the other Legolas’ right hand. “I love you both with all my heart, body and soul. Please don’t ask me chose for I can’t. Please bind to me and each other?”
Rumil grabbed his brother and Orophin stifled a yelp.
Legolas cocked his head. “But if you must?”
Haldir sighed but didn’t look away and his voice was steady when he spoke. “I would chose you, Legolas. I would live with you and forget Erestor, but I would never be whole. The two of you are a part of my soul.”
Erestor smiled. “Now I know you mean it.” He looked at Legolas and knew he already loved the other and he could share Haldir with him. But he didn’t say the words, wanting Legolas to go first. If he spoke first he would pressure the blond into accepting as well.
But Legolas smiled. It was enough for him to know Haldir would chose him. “I accept then. But I will need time. You were dead to me this morn.”
Haldir stood and placed a ring on his finger before kissing him. “I am so sorry. I saw your eyes when I died and I think I realised the truth about us in that moment. Forgive me?”
Legolas nodded. “I am going to wed you, aren’t I? I am willing to learn to love Erestor as well.”
Erestor smiled. “In that case accepting will be easy for me.”
Rumil jumped forward and hugged his brother. “We can visit often, can’t we? I shall miss them all to much if we don’t.”
Haldir nodded. “Of course. And they can come visit us.” His eyes turned longingly. “I can’t wait to be back. It’s home. You’ll understand why when you see it. Come, Glorfindel said we can leave today. I shall repeat my proposal in a month.”
Legolas shook his head. “I shall not change my mind.”
Orophin sighed. “We have no horses here, Haldir. You should give us directions and we must pack and we must say goodbye.”
Haldir looked rejected but nodded. “Very well, we shall go back two days from now.” He smiled warmly when Glorfindel walked towards them. “Glorfindel! They accepted. And Ru and Phin are coming too.”
Glorfindel smiled warmly, accepting and returning the hug. “Good! Elladan and Elrohir will journey with us for a short visit.”
Erestor steered his horse closer to Glorfindel and his eyes darted towards Haldir.
Glorfindel smiled. “Beautiful steed he’s got, right? He can control all horses in my stable and this one actually is a direct descendent of my Asfaloth.”
He smiled at Erestor’s silent growl and knew what the other was really thinking. “You find it odd?”
Erestor nodded. “Aye. I am not saying he should love him again, rather not actually, but to hate him….”
Glorfindel shrugged. “He blames Celeborn for his past pains. And for Legolas’ pain. He realised the truth in the moment of his death, Erestor. That leaves a mark.” He grabbed Erestor’s hand and squished it. “Look, things turned out all right. Celeborn is happy being Galadriel’s and Elrond’s lover. The three of them work out very well.” He grinned. “And soon the twins get a real half-sibling.”
He ignored Erestor’s stunned look and cocked his head. “And when will the three of you become intimate? Haldir’s very eager, I can tell you that.”
Erestor shrugged. “We shall have to find out our preferences first.”
Glorfindel laughed. “Then, my friend, I think your future mates will sweep you of your feet. But tell me, what is your desire?”
Erestor glared at him and blushed. He muttered between his teeth. He knew darn well the blond knew. He has told him himself long ago.
Suddenly Legolas and Haldir were flanking him. “Stop teasing him, Glorfindel.”
Legolas’ hand now rested on Erestor’s lower back and he gaped at Haldir, who smiled warmly at him before he leaned in closer and kissed him. Erestor was incapable of moving or otherwise reacting when Legolas leaned in as well and nibbled at his ear.
Legolas warmed as well. He didn’t mind pleasuring Erestor, but he wouldn’t become intimate with him before Haldir. He wanted Haldir to be the first and he suspected Erestor felt the same way.
He smiled. “Glorfindel told Haldir everything, Erestor. And I must say I share our mate’s arousing thoughts at that.”
Erestor gasped and Haldir instantly deepened the kiss.
It broke suddenly when Haldir’s horse had to jump over a fallen branch. Haldir yelped and Legolas laughed madly, leaning forward in his saddle. Erestor’s dumbfounded look was making him laugh even more. At the back his former housemates shared happy looks. That was one thing they’d feared never to hear again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Legolas and Erestor found themselves stunned to see the grandeur of the village Glorfindel had founded. Erestor clearly recognized both Imladris and Gondolin in it and he smiled. It was beautiful. It was open, warm and inviting and yet it breathed a sense of security and safety and the dark-haired elf instantly knew it had nothing to do with Valinor but with the training-camps. Glorfindel believed in maintaining the fighting skills. Erestor could see why so many warriors had found their way here with their families.
Legolas was goggling at the weapons, many of them he’d never seen before.

Haldir smiled. “I shall show you around tomorrow. It is late and I would prefer for all of us to be fully awake. Come, Glorfindel will show my brothers a house and you two stay with me.” His look became insecure. “Or would you prefer…”
Legolas shook his head. “Nay. I am not letting you go. Show us our house.”
Haldir looked at Erestor and his tutor shrugged. “There’s only one question I want answered, Haldir.”
The elf laughed and pointed to a large building in the centre of town. “That’s the library, Erestor. Tomorrow.” He grabbed his lovers and pulled them along.

Legolas noticed all elves standing aside for Haldir and many soldiers saluted to him and he realised his lover held a high position here and was extremely well-liked, if the smitten looks thrown his way were anything to go by.

A female with red hair and silver orbs approached them. “Welcome back, my child. We’ve missed you.”
Haldir beamed back and embraced her. “Lilliath, I am an adult now. This is Legolas and this is Erestor.”
Lilliath’s smile turned knowing and the eyes swiftly flashed over them taking them in.
Erestor instantly knew it was a power to reckon with. /She’s no elf./
The woman smiled and nodded. “You are correct. I am a Maia, but Nienna has granted me to serve Glorfindel and later Haldir.”
Haldir laughed. “She also helps raise the children here.”
Erestor nodded. “I noticed there were many. More than I expected.”
Haldir nodded. “Aye. A lot of them are like me, students brought here to learn. Many linger here afterwards but some return to their former homes.” He shrugged. “This is the only village where knowledge of Valinor and Middle-Earth coexist.”
Legolas gasped and suddenly understood. “Then we shall truly be happy here.” He ignored the woman and embraced his love.
Lilliath laughed warmly and turned, walking them to Haldir’s rooms.

Even Erestor gasped when seeing the grandeur of the decorations and items.
Haldir smiled. “You will find the same mixture in the books, Erestor. You will spend all day there and forget about us.” His voice was teasing but he knew there would be many days when they would have to collect the elf.

Erestor was still taking it all in when something happened he hadn’t experienced in many millennia. A premonition. His surroundings faded and he felt light-headed as another scenery appeared. He stood on the balcony, overlooking this beautiful city and saw Haldir address the crowd. Why was he alone? And were was Legolas? Instantly two arms ensnared him from behind even as a kiss was planted on his neck. “He’s too loved. They always go to him. Glorfindel might like it. I do not.” Erestor smiled at the disappointed tone in Legolas’ voice. “Well, when do you think we’ll be seeing him tonight?” Erestor shrugged. He was too stunned by the ring on Legolas’ finger. A closer look told him he wore one too.

Legolas shook Erestor and looked at him worriedly even though Lilliath didn’t seem to be bothered. That may relax Haldir, it didn’t relax him.
Erestor’s eyes regained their awareness and he beamed at Legolas. “We will work out just fine!” At Legolas’ and Haldir’s puzzled yet knowing glances he smiled. “I just caught a glimpse of it.” He pulled them both close and continued walking.
