You run through the woods. Branches hit your face. You pant as sweat pours off your face. They’re still chasing you. They won’t quick. You have to keep running. You know that if you stop, you’re dead.

How did this happen? How did you end up here? One minute you were eating breakfast before walking to work and the next you’re in the woods being chased by monsters.

You stumble over rocks and feel your right ankle land wrong. Your heart does a summersault in fear, but you manage to keep running. Your adrenaline nubs the pain in your ankle as you fight to keep air in your lungs. You chest and stomach are on fire and your heart feels like it’ll burst any second. You can’t think because your brain is using all of the oxygen to keep you from passing out.

You hear their war cries and branches snapping behind you over the sound of the river beside you. You hear their taunts and know they are slowly gaining on you. You can’t give up, as long as you keep moving you’ll be fine.

You dodge a large tree branch and break through the last line of trees in the forest. You gasp and stop a few inches from the edge of the cliff. You look to see there is a waterfall pouring into the river before. There’s no way in hell you’re jumping! It has to be at least seventy feet!

You turn back and see the ugly monsters running towards you. Their swords are high in the air as they lick their lips.

Without another thought, you do something you swore you wouldn’t do. You jump. All of the breath is sucked from your lungs as you fall. Time seems to slow down. Your limps fly around you. As you near the water, you swear that you see a group of people starring at you in horror. One who is already running towards the river.

All of your breath comes back to you as your feet hit the water. The pain from your right ankle is so intense that you scream. Then, darkness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You opens your eyes. The light is bright to your eyes, so you squeeze them shut. You groan in pain. Every part of your body is on fire. You try to move, but stop when your stomach turns. You moan and force yourself to keep still. Once your stomach is settled, you try opening your eyes again.
You are in a well-kept room. There are a row of beds on the other side of you. All of the beds have curtains on one side of them and a tray on the other. The walls are white and bare. To one end of the room is a wooden door. The other end of the room is a glass door that shows a beautiful garden.
“I must be in the healing room,” you say to yourself. You know you should stay seated, but the garden calls to you. All of the colors catch your attention and you have to go to it. You sit up and bite your lip to keep yourself from screaming. You wait for the pain to recede before slowly getting up.
You barely make it to your feet. Thump! “AH!” you cry out in pain. Your legs have given out and now you’re sitting on the cold marble floor as pain overtakes you again.
“What in Grey Haven-“ You see a handsome man burst through the wooden door. His long dark brown hair dances around his face. His grey eyes widen when they see you on the floor. “Oh no. Elladan! Get Father! Now!”
You watch in wonder as he slowly approaches you like you were a scared animal backed into a corner. You snort. Even if you were, it would be hard to be scared of someone who looks as good as he does.
“You don’t have to be all careful and stuff,” you say dryly. “I’m a big girl, I’m not scared that easily.”
He smiles sheepishly. “Sorry if I offended you. I didn’t know how you were going to act since you had that run in with those orcs.”
“Orcs,” you repeat. That term seems familiar, but you can’t remember why. You push it to the back of you mind, there are other questions you need to ask. “You saw me running from them?”
“I didn’t see you run from them,” he admits. “But I did see you jump the waterfall.” He shudders. “We weren’t sure you were going to survive the fall.”
“We? Who’s we?” you ask.
He sits down beside you. “Erestor, Father, Elladan, and myself,” he answers. “My name is Elrohir.”
You hear footsteps and gasp. You look from Elrohir to the two at the door. While one of the men at the door looks older than the other two, you swear that they are all the same person.
“I feel like I’m seeing triple,” you mumble.
Elrohir chuckles while the oldest one kneels beside you. “How do you feel?” the man asks.
“Like shit,” you say bluntly.
He blinks while the other two chuckle.
“I like her,” Elrohir says.
“If you like her so much then why weren’t you in here when she woke up?” he asks. Elrohir cringes.
“Don’t worry about it,” you say. “I didn’t get up because no one was here. I just wanted to see the garden. It looks so beautiful that I wanted to explore it.”
You must have said the right thing because the eldest man smiles. You blush. You think that you’ve died and gone to Heaven with all of these attractive men around you. And if it wasn’t for the current pain you’re feeling, you’d almost believe it.
“You definitely said the right thing,” the man still standing says. “That’s Father’s garden.”
You blink. You look at the eldest man. “You’re their father?” you ask in disbelief. “You don’t look a day over thirty!”
Elrohir gives you a funny look. “Of course he doesn’t look older, he’s an elf,” he says.
“An elf,” you repeat. You begin to shake your head, but stop when a sharp pain enters your head. You put your hands to your head and whimper.
“Elrohir, she’s obviously confused,” their father says. “Help me get her up so she can rest.”
“No, no, no,” you say. “I’d rather stay on the floor and not move.” You put your hands down and hold the floor as though it’ll stop them from moving you.
“All right,” he says. He turns to Elrohir’s brother. “Elladan, please go and get more blankets. If she is going to lay on the floor, we want to make sure she is comfortable.”
“I’ll help him.” Elrohir stands. He gently puts his hand on your shoulder before leaving with Elladan.
“They’re identical twins,” you say in awe. “Do they have any siblings that look like you too?”
Their father smiles. “Yes, they are. They have a younger sister named Arwen, you’ll meet her later. She doesn’t take after me as much as they did.” He sits on the floor and studies you. “Now I have a question for you.” You don’t say anything, waiting for him to continue. “Why did it surprise you to find that I and my sons are elves?”
“Because elves don’t exist,” you state.
He blinks. “Why do you say that?” he asks.
You laugh. “Elves are magical creatures who live forever. There’s no such magic on Earth.”
“You mean Middle Earth,” he corrects.
You give him a funny look. “No, I mean Earth. Middle Earth doesn’t exist either. A man named Tolkien made it up.”
“Middle Earth is very real and you’re in it.”
You stare at him. Suddenly, it hits you. Elrohir. Elladan. Arwen. Orcs. Erestor. You hesitate before asking, “What is your name?”
“Elrond.”
Your brain kicks into overdrive as you try not to panic. You are sitting beside an elf who is the leader of Rivendell, a place that shouldn’t exist. It’s too much for you to take. For the second time, you are fall into darkness.
